  1. I'm in the DC area right now as a photojournalist- and as a photojournalist, you never really get a

day off. Here's my story, and I'll get to the point quickly.

I was in the city at this think tank panel discussion on economics and then had planned to just get

some coffee and head back home and relax for the day because I had no assignments that day

(I'm working for a weekly) and all my other work had been completed. I brought with me however

my D300 and just threw on my 50 1.8.. you know- just in case. Its much smaller than my 17-55

obviously. Well, I get a call that the photographer for the paper that was covering this graduation in

DC could not make it- the reporter called me and I had to shoot the event. I kept thinking, shoot- I

would really like my 17-55 and 70-200 for this, but I was stuck with just the 50---no flash either.

Conclusion of the story- I was forced to get very creative with this lens and frame things myself- so

a good tip to photographers, beginners and experienced-- do this ever so often. It really does help

with creativity and forces you to think outside of the box. And IMO, I got some really good, useful

shots that I'm really happy with and I think the people who read the paper will be happy with too.<div>00PjeG-47369584.jpg.3e2c98a48674433cdca6695a04fcea38.jpg</div>

  2. personally, i like the sb400- yes, it could be frustrating for non horizontal photos- but add

an strofen omni thing- and shoot direct for good results. I prefer it over the 600 at times-

for nice group shots, etc- much lighter!

  3. I use my sb-400 for mugshots of columnists, writers for our paper, and set them up with

some kind of wall next to them (this wont be the in photo) but I then bounce the flash off

that wall, and it gives a natural look- part of their face lit, the other a slight shadow. Its a

nice effect, I've included it here... ha- I couldn't find a better one- this one is little weird

because his jacket is still kind of on- but you'll get the idea with the lighting.<div>00P2hO-42694584.thumb.jpg.6d1b4e2f544f98b157ed870f277c4784.jpg</div>
