Assuming that there is no problem with the lens, then it won't focus to infinity because the film plane is too far away from the lens. The distance from a point within the lens (the rear nodal point) to the film plane should be the focal length, 90mm, to focus at infinity. A recessed lens board might cure your problem.

The relevant (thin lens) equation is 1/fl = 1/f1 + 1/f2, where fl = focal length, f1 = distance from lens to subject, f2 = distance from lens to image plane. Substituting f1 = infinity, then f2 = fl.

Thanks but I think I've exhausted all of the possibilities and will probably be purchasing a longer lens in the end. Let me see if I can surmised what I've found out from the good folks at Large Format Photography Blog. I tried all of the advise given like taking off the digital adapter and replacing it with the original ground glass, collapsing the bellows so it is completely closed, trying to focus with the lens off against a well lit subject and moving it back and forth and nothing seems to work perfectly. I did have better luck with the ground glass instead of the digital adapter and that does indicate that the problem is distance. I was able to see the subject a lot better once the bellows was completely closed but the critical focus wasn't there. Some people have suggested that the 90mm may not be able to work with my bellows because of the distance and I get that. I don't think getting a bag bellows will be of any use because even with the camera closed completely now I can't get critical focus due to the knobs. I wasn't looking for any movements with this 90mm lens because I just wanted something wider than the 210mm for landscapes so there's that. I appreciate all of the information here and at LFP blog but I think I've hit a dead end as it pertains to the 90mm. I will keep trying but just because I don't like to give up that easy. If and when I figure this out I will definitely update everyone here and elsewhere.

Thanks for all of your help, I really do appreciate it.

  2. Could it be possible that the lens I just purchased on Ebay is not as great as it seems? I am having thoughts that maybe the seller or someone else before the seller changed out the rear lens for a different lens. This lens looks great! It just won't focus on anything that's further than a few inches away. I am using a Cambo 4x5 monorail camera and no matter how I set the front or rear it just won't focus fa away. This is supposed to be a wide angle landscape lens but only works as a macro lens. My other lens is a Caltar 210mm f5.6 and it focuses at any distance meaning the bellows on my Cambo does the focusing as it should.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  3. Hello everyone. I recently purchased an adapter so I can use my Canon 5DRS on my Cambo large format camera. I've been playing with the two systems lately and found that it isn't all that easy. If anyone here has done similar please don't hesitate to chime in and give me some pointers. The only lens I have right now is a 210mm on the Cambo so portraits are all I can shoot or some products. I am looking into getting a 90mm for some landscapes although I don't know if I want to carry this very heavy and cumbersome collection of equipment outdoors. This may well be my studio gear and find something lighter for outdoors.

    Thanks

  4. Hello friends. I hope everyone is doing well. I have a question for anyone who uses a digital back on their large format camera. I own a Cambo 4x5 film camera, and I also have a Phase One P back on my Hasselblad H2 that I would like to use because I can't find anyone in the State of Florida that can develop 4x5 sheets. I am looking at an adapter plate on ebay that is a Graflock style connection and looks to be the correct one. Graflook is Graflock correct? They should all be the same size and fit I assume.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  5. What concerns me the most is the tone of the conversation and the almost apologetic fashion in which some photo.net

members have gone out of their way to forgive this person. Some of you have offered advice on how to circumvent the

law and punishment. I'm all for repent but seriously folks! Let the guy realize what he's done and pay for it. It almost

seems as if some members feel sorry for this guy and want to help him overcome his attempt to cheat and lie to make

money. He is either a repeat offender or a young novice and neither should be allowed here I think.

I await the bashing of the masses with a clear mind.

  6. Hello everyone!

I just bought a Fuji EX1 and should arrive in a couple of days. Although I purchased the kit lens I am more excited about the ability to use

older Fujinon X type lenses even though I've read that the kit lens is pretty good. Does anyone here use older manual Fuji lens on their

EX1 or XPro 1 cameras? I also wanted to find out if anyone uses Nikon lenses on these camera systems as well. I should have started

with that since its on my subject line.

Anyway, love to hear anyone's experience with either of the lens choices.

    Thanks

  7. Just wanted to share my findings since it appears that no one has ever dealt with this before. I was able to buy a generic

battery charger for the 7.2v grip battery at the local battery store. The only problem or downfall is that it charges very slow

due to the low wattage of the charger. The typical Hasselbald charger has nearly 2 watts and the one I bought had only

1.3 watts. I was able to charge the battery overnight and the battery charged to nearly full.

  8. Hello, I misplaced my charger and until I get a new one shipped I'm in need of a replacement for the weekend. Does anyone know if there

is another type of charger available at the local Radio Shack or battery store I could use? It is the rechargeable Li Ion type with a plug on

    top (no batteries inside)

I ordered one online but it will take a few days.

    Thanks

  9. I love film and I love digital. They both offer something very different in my photography. If I could get faster turn around

on my E-6 slides I would use film more often but it's becoming more and more time consuming not to mention difficult

lately. I've tried several labs in the past year and all have failed. Some have lost my film and sent me someone else's and

others have developed my film in either dirty water or tainted with something but either way I've had to spend hours fixing

them once they are digitized. That's another thing! In order to achieve the best quality scans I have to pay through the

nose because an affordable scanner is not capable of doing a good job.

I now shoot film alongside digital just for fun and to keep the dream alive. Not as many but just enough to have a few for

later. It's like when my doctor said not to eat fried foods anymore. I don't for the most part but I still do every once in a

while just so I don't loose the habit.

    My two cents

  10. Thank you gentlemen! I've been dealing with this issue for some time now but because it's been easier to rent what I

needed I've not had the need to change. I now find myself wanting to take my larger sensor and files on the road

to have an easier system to work with. I've also considered purchasing the new Nikon D3X instead because of its

versatility but I don't think I'll be happy. You know once you go MF you never go back! Or something like that.

    Again, thank you!

  11. I posted this in "digital photography" section and I don't know if it's the right place so I'm posting it here as well. Sorry for the double post!

Hello, is anyone here using the Mamiya RZ 22 or 33 megapixel system and if so can you help me with a decision? I currently shoot with

an older digital back and an adapter with all sorts of cables and am seriously thinking of updating to a better system without the hassle of

cables and batteries. I want to stay with the RZ system because I already own several lens otherwise I'd be looking at other systems. My

current digital back is a 16 megapixel so I'd like to see how much better a 22 megapixel file can be. I rent the Hasselblad 31 megapixel

system regularly and I like the size of those files so I know I'll be satisfied with the Mamiya 33 but what about the 22, is that going to be

enought o justify spending $12,000 dollars?

Thanks everyone! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  13.
I've had mine for more years than I can recall. It has recently developed a battery depleting symptom though. I used to be able to keep a roll of film in the body and as long as I kept the camera on "off" I could pick it up anytime in a month or more and shoot. Now I have to install new "Duracell Coppertop" only by the way, no other type of batteries will work and use up that roll quickly otherwise a week later the batteries are drained. Other than that it still works like the champ that it is.
Maybe you got a bad one or two, it happens.

  14.
I just found out that B&H is closed this Thursday, Friday and I didn't pay attention after that. Harvey said it's a holiday. I don't recall any holiday but it's NY. Does anyone here know any place upstate where I can buy some? I also have a few days here in Sarasota if anyone knows of a place here.

Thanks

  15. Hi friends! Going to NY city this week and was wondering if anyone knows of a good, reasonably priced place to buy some 120 or 220

film. I am currently in Sarasota and cannot find anywhere near by to buy film. All we have here is Wolf/Ritz camera and although you

can still take your mf film there to develop, they stopped carrying any medium format film.

    Thanks

  16. Hi all, I'm wondering if any fashion photographers here are using a 60mm lens as stated in one post. I use a 50, 85 and sometimes

100 when using 35mm equipment but normally an 80 or longer with medium format. I'm wondering who makes a 60mm lens old or new.

    Thanks

  17.
Ray you are absolutely correct about the 33 vs 31. There are so many numbers to deal with I sometimes get them wrong. Even though the crop factor leaves me with an image just a little bigger than a full frame DSLR there is a big difference in the quality of the image that this back produces. I see it everyday. I have shot side by side with my Nikon D2X and the Mamiya w/Kodak back and even with a Kodak DCS 14n which is a full frame 35mm dslr and although the Nikon D2X does produce a nice image even the Kodak makes for a better, richer image. That's just my opinion and I know someone here will certainly call me out on that comment.
Anyways, thanks and nice talking to you.

  18.
Michael, I looked at the CFV-39 but again I have to shoot slower than with the H system so I either stay with what I have and keep renting what I need as I needed.

Ray, yes all I would need is the cable. I have fitted the Kodak on the Hasselblad and it fits like the film back perfectly. My logic says to upgrade with the newer RZ digital so I don't have to deal with all those cables but I've never used one so I can't compare the quality to anything else like the H systems that I rent on a regulars basis. How much do you crop on your 645afd? What's the ratio? How big are your files? I'm not complaining about the Kodak as some people do. It really is a nice file and the instant image is way better than waiting for the film development so I don't complaint much there but the cables and the external battery is a pain. I just would like a larger file to eliminate having to rent. The Hasselblad H3D 31 I can purchase for under $12K but the Mamiya RZ Digital 31 megapixel still fetches about $20K so that's where I'm stuck. Heck, I can even rent to own on the Hassy!
I use my RZ w/Kodak DCS for food and close up work right now. I can't take out on location due to the external battery issue, not very practical.
Have you used the new RZ31?

Ed

  19. Hello fellow photographers. This question is about format and cost. I own a Mamiya RZ 67 Pro with a few lens and a digital back

made by Kodak. It is a square format so I loose some real estate compared to the film which is 6x7cm. Actually, I loose a lot of real

estate. I also own a Hasselblad 500cm with a few lens and NO digital back. I rent H systems all the time to do certain jobs that

require larger size files and faster shooting than the Mamiya system offers me. I like the Hasselblad H system for work because of

course it's instant and I don't have to wait to develop the film and then scan but I also love what the film provides which is what most

of us know but cannot explain. I would love to purchase both an H system with a digital back and the new Mamiya RZ digital with it's

31 megapixel back but I can only buy one. I thought about purchasing an adapter for the Kodak to use with the V system but it's only

16 megapixel and not enough for what I do so I must upgrade.

So to recap: do I stay with the Mamiya system or go to the Hasselblad H system and keep the older systems for personal work. Is

anyone here using the new Mamiya RZ digital system and can you provide some information that can help me decide? I already know

what the H system with a 31 megapixel produces so I'm good there but I haven't used or even seen an image from the RZ yet to

    compare.

    Thanks to everyone in advance.

    Ed

  20. Dave I am shocked that you would say that about my dear beloved RZ! The canon scanner I use is not great but far from being a

coke bottle. I can also attest to drum scans because I have done lots of them in my time and I can say that some are not as great as

the price being asked. I still say that the RZ is one of the best cameras ever made and still produces great images. That's my story

    and I'm sticking to it!

    Cheers
