1.
These should work fine, although I only know of the YN stuff from what I've read hear and other places. Make certain that they function when you get them. Check all power levels. You'll want to know if one is broken sooner than later.

You'll also want umbrellas or softboxes to soften the light. The larger the modifier the softer the light.

 2.
This depends a lot on what you plan to shoot with it. How you plan to shoot.

 3.
Are you trying the 64 bit version or the 32 bit? If you're using the 64 bit version try the 32 bit version. I assume you have a somewhat recent edition of Vuescan, 9.x.x.

 4.
Vuescan does eventually detect the scanner, but it says the scanner is not ready.

Did you put film in it?

 5.
Once you put it in the appropriate folder restart PSE. You should find it under Filter> CFSystems> ColorPerfect.

 6.
Well if Vuescan won't work for you then you're limited in your solutions. It would look like you need to get yourself an older computer with an outdated OS and install the old software. Good luck.

 7.
First thing I would try is Vuescan. Assuming that everything works as planned you can then decide to get a second older computer if you'd like. Some people do this as compatibility with older hardware as you're suggesting, and others do it so they don't need to tie up their main computer with scanning.

If Vuescan doesn't work, don't by the software until you figure out why. Buying the software will not make it work or make it work better. The trial is perpetual, you don't just have 30 days. It will however leave a watermark on your images until you buy it. According to Vuescan's page on that scanner you won't need to install any special drivers to get it to work with a Mac http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/polaroid_sprintscan_120.html
so if the software doesn't work then there's a problem, and buying the software won't solve it.

 8.
Is it this one http://www.photo.net/beginner-photography-questions-forum/00cSWc

 9.
I don't know if the Codec is autoupdated or not. I've always installed it manually. It wouldn't be something that most PC users would need.

 10.
Try the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829

 11.
Well I'd say you should trial Vuescan first, then decide if you like it or not. Some people are just turned off by it and rather prefer Silverfast. Either way buying the book for whatever you decide will help, but there are a lot of people who make do without it.

 12.
You aren't trying to remove dust from black and white film are you? The silver content of traditional (not C-41) black and white film block the IR channel completely rendering the process useless for that.

 13.
What is your editing routine. I see banding, although not obvious. But it would bug me if I were the one doing the editing. What colorspace do you work in?

 14.
Lex, if flickr hasn't required that you use a Yahoo login yet it soon will.

 15.
I apologize if this has already been said elsewhere but the NEW55 film's Kickstarter page is active.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bobcrowley/new55-film

New55 FILM is a black-and-white peel-apart instant 4×5 film that offers both a fine negative and a positive print, too. New55 FILM is a preloaded single-shot film which is exposed in a special dedicated holder. The photographer’s handling workflow with New55 FILM at capture resembles the workflow experienced in the past with the discontinued single-shot preloaded films like old Polaroid Type 53, 55 and 59...

More can be read at the Kickstarter link as well as the blog
http://new55project.blogspot.com/
