Has anyone ever found a lens cap (not lens hoodie) to work with the Heliopan slim?
-

>>[Eric Eisenstein]>> Clarence: this is a JPG conversion. The original was shot in Raw. Mode was Av with flash.

My short recommendation: Never use Av mode with flash.

http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/index2.html
Av (aperture priority) mode flash.

Av mode lets you set the depth of field by specifying the lens aperture. The camera then chooses a shutter speed ranging from 30 seconds to the camera’s X-sync speed, in order to expose the background correctly. If that means the shutter speed is some really low value so that you need to use a tripod to avoid camera-shake blur, so be it. In dark conditions, therefore, Av mode works in slow sync mode.

I agree with the http://www.planetneil.com/tangents/flash-photography-techniques/3-dragging-the-shutter/ recommendation to learn about dragging the shutter.

And since links are cheap: http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=106

My bottom line recommendation for improving what I think you were trying to achieve in your photo above: I recommend the "night portrait" mode on your XSi dial... it actually does a nice job of automatically dragging the shutter with flash.

-

>> Xsi, 40 mm/f2.8, 0.3 sec, on-camera fill flash

The EXIF is messed up... what mode were you using? Not Av with flash, right?

-

I'm not familiar with Nikon settings and options, but the EXIF says "Gain Control = Low gain up".
Is that normal?

"you... implicate my comments and advice are suggesting that “spray and pray in RAW (and) we'll fix it in post” is my advice"

William, my comments were independent of your advice. Any "implication" that you infer from my comment is misinterpreted.

"Spray and Pray" and "fix it in post" was referring to Kevin's original comments...

"I was going to tell him (our friend) to just get 100 shots of everything "

"I guess I could have him shoot everything in RAW and do the editing on the computer."

-

[Christopher M] I think he may need more than 100 shots too.

[Nadine Ohara] Why 100 photos?

[William W] even minimalist Professionals such as I would likely take more than 100 images - do not limit your friend with details like that.

I think the OP meant 100 shots EACH of EVERYTHING...

[Kevin White] I was going to tell him (our friend) to just get 100 shots of everything and that there will be some really good ones in there somewhere.

I'm more concerned about this comment in the original post...

"A friend has agreed to shoot our wedding and reception for us using my equipment... He will also have his SLR and lense as a backup"

If he's confident and competent with his own camera, isn't mentioned. But to hand unfamiliar equipment to a photographer who you're advising to "spray and pray in RAW, we'll fix it in post"?! Oof.
What's his usual SLR and lens? Is it at least DSLR? If he's going to be using your Nikon, is he familiar with the Nikon controls?

-
Will, you need to resize your pictures to 700 pixels wide (yours are 800), otherwise POTM resizes them in frame and the edge jaggies are nasty.

>> Another problem I'm having is figuring out the settings to where my target in the foreground is in crisp detail

Use aperture mode set to wide open (lowest f/stop number that your lens will do, e.g. f/2.8)

see page 47 to set ISO to 400
Then use Av mode at the lowest f/stop setting (page 39).
However, this will probably be very similar to what the ACTION mode was giving you... fastest ISO with widest/fastest aperture, so don't expect too much from a 2003 5MP P&S.
P.S. RE: "I'm a mom and closet photographer."
I've photographed moms before, but never a closet. ;)

Assuming you want to make the best of the camera you've already got, looking at http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/hp945.html it looks like your HP Photosmart 945 would do best at ISO 400, Av=2.8 (or as low as it'll go,depending on your zoom it may be between f/2.8 and f/3.1).
Only use the flash if you're within ~20 ft of the subject.

Monday Night's Redskins-Steelers game from the very top row of the NFL's largest stadium, FedEx Field. Arguably the worst seats in the house, but the view was fine. Unfortunately the Skins lost, 23-6.

A baker's dozen from last night's Redskins vs Cleveland Browns game. Hopefully this isn't too many... I
compressed the heck out of the JPGs to keep the file size minimal.

My Sigma 50-500mm did great at the daytime games I went to this year, but last night the Bigma definitely had a
harder time with the stadium lights, so I had to use ISO 3200.

Unfortunately, our seats were again at the VERY top row of the stadium (and FedEx Field is the NFL's largest
stadium, beating NY Giants by 11,000 seats). Ask any photographer which seat would be
the worst sport in the stadium and they'd all probably point to where my son & I were sitting:
This one was from the first quarter... there was still one spot of sunset remaining, so for a limited time my SS was

FP/HSS High-Speed Sync Hack vs. ControlTL HyperSync
in Lighting Equipment
Posted

Dan Ferrell: You lose a stop of flash power for every stop of shutter speed beyond your sync speed. 1/8000th of a second is 5 stops beyond 1/250th. Your shutter is now part of the equation, simple as that. Technically you're supposed to lose a stop of power just going into FP/HSS, then subtract a stop for every stop of speed you advance from what I've read. So the PW thing may actually gain you a half a stop or maybe a stop over that.

Doesn't that assume that the HSS pulse is at a constant level regardless of shutter speed?

It appears that the power output is increased as the shutter speed is decreased...
http://www.pocketwizard.com/inspirations/technology/fp_sync_hss/

Note that as shutter speed decreases, since the pulse duration decreases, the HSS light output approaches normal (non-HSS) flash power... at 1/4000", the flash output is close to full-power at 1/250".
