1.
I meant to say this a while back.
But thank you for posting the process of fixing the flash.
i followed your link and fixed mine also. And on top of that i have been sending people who have the same problem to your link.
Again... Thank you.

  2.
I'll second that. It's under warrenty then might as well get it fixed, it is a D700 ;)
Another thing i'd try to do though before sending it in.. Is blow the ish out of the eyepiece. Their might be some dirt stuck in there that's stopping it from closing. It worked for me before though it wasn't a d700...

Anyway good luck

  3.
I'd say sell them both. But if you are going to sell only one then i'd sell the body b with few shutter.
Reason being that you can ask for more money for that body. And body a will still last you a long time.
What ever you do enjoy the new camera.
Cheers!

  4.
Hello Charmian

In all honesty heres the deal.

They both work and will do what you need. not one or the other will do better.

The real difference is the price.

can you afford to pay 2000 dollars for a mac. vs 800 dollars for a same spec pc.

I use pc.
(vista sucks but it isnt as bad as mac users say it is ;)
(and i run linux for everyday work, windows for lightroom)

Some day when i have loads of money.
I will buy a mac. for one reason only.
They look so nice and fantastic. That's about it.

Get a pc if the mac will break your bank. ;)
P.s
The company i bought my pc at gives two types of insurance .
one is a extention to the 2 years man. warranty. which cost 50 bucks.
The other is a one time accidental damage warranty.. which cost 150 bucks.
So i can get a new pc with in those 3 years for 200 bucks.
If i accidentally drop a glass of water on my running laptop. Im not rich but im not cheap. so i hope it doesnt happen.

Good luck

  5.
Thanks William.

I did miss understand your answer.
My knowledge as just gained some more thanks to you.

Mine is the Nikon af 50mm 1.8D version. with both the aperture ring and the electronic contacts.
I taped up the contacts and switched the ring to something else other then f22. and no lock up ;)

I love learning new things.

Thanks again.

  6.
Ask friends who play sports.
Go to different clubs and let them know you would like to learn sports photography.
And you would give them some photos for free for letting you shoot there.

Find a local sports photographer and ask if you could tag along.

Even if you arent shooting exactly what you want at first you will have
a. experience shooting different sports.
b. have a sports portfolio.
c. you will have your name out there.

Thats what happened to me.
I went on my own did my thing shared photos with the athletes who in turn talked about them,
and then got phone calls to shoot the events.

Good luck.

  7.
Hello Erica.

Hopefully this isn't a paying gig and you are doing it to learn photography on your own.

5.6 will probably come out looking pretty dark unless the place is extremely well lit.
But.. doesn't mean it can't be done.. You just might have to do some creative editing afterwards.

When i shoot at the ring ( i like to be far from it and not ring side, personal thing)
So I shoot from 200-300mm 1/160 f5-f5.6 iso 1600 for the sitting shots.
and 70-150 1/200 iso 1600 f4.5 for the action parts
And i take a very artistic approach to the shoot

The place is decently lit. But still a bit dark.
So in lightroom i bump up the exposure a bit and desaturate the colors.

heres one example.
http://1x.com/photos/member/14511/21820/
that one was 70mm 1/160 f4.5 iso1600

The lens i use is the 70-300 vr
camera Nikon d70 (old beast)

If you can use your 50 1.4 youll have much better luck. depending how close you can be to the action.

And while you are there try all the different settings.
That was what i did my first day shooting at the ring.
1600 1/200 5.6
then dropping it down more and more and more.
Going home and looking at what turned out.
Then remembering the lighting and settings and using those again.

And if you can use a flash you would be better off.
I prefer not to, again personal preference.

Good luck. I hope that helped you in anyway.

  8.
I dont know Williams.

I have a 50mm 1.8 and if i try to switch the aperture ring on the lens to something else other then f22 the camera (dslr) locks up.

Now if you took the poor lens apart and did what you say... maybe...
but in that case id buy a wireless trigger and set up the flash closer to the subject if at all possible.

  9.
Congratulations on the job!!

Well if they love your work that much i can only say one thing.

Do what you do and if they bring anything up ..
say this is how i shot all of my other work, and you loved it ;)
(not in a mean snobbish kinda way.. but in a fun friendly artistic kind of way)

Be confident and do what you do.

I can't help you on the pricing.
What are you worth.
Don't undercharge.
keep all the rights to your photos. If they want the rights charge triple if not more.

And while you are there network your butt off. bring lots of business cards.

Good luck.

  10.
Freckles are so beautiful and rare.

But since you want to minimize this is a quick way i use.

duplicate layer.
apply gaussian blur to background layer
bring up the history pallete
click duplicate layer state in history to bring it back to what it looked like before you applied blur.
click the first column next to gaussian blue (in the history pallete)
choose history brush from the tool pallete
change the hbrush to lighten

hope that helps

  11.
I have the elinchrom skyport

these ones..
http://www.adorama.com/EL19360.html?searchinfo=skyport&item_no=2
(the rx ones are for the big strobes)

180$ for transmitter and receiver.
plus an extra 100$ for an extra receiver.

They work great.

I use them with vivtar 285hv so i had to modify the wire that connects the receiver to the flash.
No big deal
Just a small 10 cent capacitor soldered in the line. some tape and done.

  12.
Just my great luck.

I buy a lens, a few months later it drops in price by 100-150 dollars.
(quite a lot of money for me)

Now im saving up and think..
I'll wait and save up more so i can buy everything i want together.

And the prices increase buy a couple hundred..

What great luck i have. lol

  13.
I use tripods for long exposures and for bracketing.. that's about it.

If you do find that the lens gets to heavy for you over time.

Then i would recommend a monopod. ;)

  14.
d700 + 24-70
about 5000 canadian before tax.

canon 5d mk2 + 24-70
about 4500 canadian before tax.

500 bucks is a big difference.. if you arent made of money.
that could be a flash. even another lens.

Personally id go with the Nikon..
I love the way they feel in my hand.
and i have abused my d70 quite a bit.. still in top notch shape.

I echo what other have said.. Go to the shop. hold it keep holding it.. walk around bring the camera to your eye. keep holding.. play with the settings.. etc..

Which felt like it was an extention to your arm? Go with that one..

What if both felt like it?

Then close your eyes. spin around till you get dizzy.
try to focus on one..
Which comes into focus first.

and if that doesnt work (or the store owner doesnt let you spin till you are dizzy)..
Then.. what's your favorite color out of the two. Red or Yellow?

Go with that one. ;)

  15.
When i am packing for a full day of wondering around mindlessly.

d70.
2x batteries.
50 1.8.
18-70.
70-300 vr.
2x vivitar 285hv.
pack of lee gels.
couple packs of double aa's.
2x elinchrom skyport receivers + one transmiter.
ducttape.
rope.
cell phone.
walkman.
a big bag of trailmix and fruitsnacks.
bottle of water.
bandages in case i cut myself falling from a tree.
a map.
a couple dollars to spend in case i need to.
someday when the money rolls in.. ill have a tripod or monopod to add to the mix.

That's pretty much it, i believe.

But usually you find me wondering around with a d70 and a 50 1.8 tucked in my coat pocket ;)

Oh and a mind full of ideas.

  16.
The great thing about photography... is you dont really have to stay in and read to learn.
Go out and experiment.

But if you really want some books.. Here's two i searched on amazon.
I have read a book of his. Was pretty well explained.
http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Photography-Book-Scott-Kelby/dp/032147404X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231309961&sr=1-1

http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Photography-Book-2/dp/0321524764/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231309961&sr=1-3

Once you are passed that.
http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/
For some creative lighting.

Enjoy your new camera and hobby.

  17. I echo what Charles said,

And if you are looking for numbers then..

What do you think YOU and your work is worth.

    100/200/300 an hour.

Look around your area.. what do photographers charge? etc.( for an idea )

If you will be going for a "flat rate do what you want with the photos".

Then i would charge much more. 400/500/600. etc

    Why?...

Well if he is going to be using your work for marketing reasons which will bring (hopefully) more business to

him, which brings in more money..

    Then..

    You deserve a cut.

If it's for something he wants to hang on his walls ..

    show off to friends etc..

Then the first prices should be good.

    But with that said.

You might want to add that he will only get a set amount of prints.

And if he wants copies he can pay the extra fee for those.

(or better yet. If his clients want prints, then they will have to come to you directly. but he will also get a

    small cut from those sales)

    Just ideas. Hope that helps.

    But whatever you do.

Get that contract written, read, and signed.

    No matter what!.

    Good luck.

  18. If it's not to late...

    Let them know straight up.

This is your first wedding shoot on your own.

That you have been doing this for a couple years

And that you are confident in your work.....

Find out what they really want.

    Every couple is different.

    Some might want goofy photos.

Some might want only family photos.....Seriously who knows.

And what i personally consider to be very important.

    Is..

that you let them know you are an artist..

    In other words...

    Do you like my work?

Because with freedom this is what i will provide you with.

(remember you have been a second shooter.. so your pressure will be much heavier as a first shooter)

    AND......

    Be very polite

If it seems like it isn't going to work out ..

Then bite the apple and recommend them to a few other Quality photographers.

Being honest is something you don't see a lot.

And usually works out for the best in the long run.

(depending on the attitude you want to portray)

    That's my personal opinion.

    One more thing.

Get everything as clear as possible on paper.

    It is a business.

    Good luck.

And congratulations on your first business shoot. ;)

  19. Way Better then what i could do with flash.

    But honestly.

There's something i don't like about that drop down galleries menu.

It throws off my balance sort of speak.

Almost to the point i dont enjoy the photos as much.

    By the way.

I really like that "old thing"

What about getting rid of it completely

and incorporating it into the bottom menu.

    An idea would be.

Having a few text based clicky links. Which expand to show its content once clicked on.

All with in that bottom bar.

    Keeps everything in one place

    Tidier

    And also easier for navigating.

And where's your name on the page?

Its hidden in the tab part.

And i have to click twice to get to it.

Stick it on your landing page.

That way if i stumble upon it

I'll know right away who you are.

But aside from that. I like it.

    Good job.

    And nice photos.
