1. No. In "the industry" we refer to that as semiconductor yield. Wafers are round, and you get a certain number

of defects scattered randomly over the surface of the wafer. Sensors are rectangular, so if you cut large

rectangles out of a circle, you end up with a lot of useless "pie wedges" left over. The smaller the rectangles,

the less area wasted in pie wedges, and the less sensors that collide with the scattered defects.

So make the sensors hexagonal to more closely approximate the image circle. It's a win-win all around.

  2. I recently picked up a Sigma 28-105 1:2.8-4 to replace my Sigma 28-105 1:4-5.6 as a walking around/family event

lens. Now I see several Sigma 24-135 1:2.8-4 on Bay for nice prices. Is the extra zoom range worth investing in

this lens? Which lens do you like better for IQ?

I've only got a chance to blow off one card of pics with the new lens, so I don't really have a handle on it's

qualities yet, especially since I switched to shooting RAW about the same time.

  3. I like what you did, but it is very jarring to me to see the turtle in sharp relief and the log right under him OOF. Perhaps expand the mask to the portion of the environment that is supporting his weight to make it less jarring.
  4. Has there every been a video camera made that would mount K-mount lenses? I have

a weird video project coming up and I was hoping to be able to distort the

recording with some very wide photo lenses.

BTW, has there ever been a video camera made that would accept any brand of

    photo lenses?

  5. "If you've ever been to a high end sporting event, and noticed the strobes popping from the ceilings, then you've seen pocket wizards (the defacto standard) in action."

Not to derail too much, but I've always wondered how they arrange that. Do the photographers climb into the catwalks and place their strobes? Are they provided by the arena? What's to keep some idiot from firing one off every few seconds and blinding the patrons and the TV cameras. How do the TV cameras deal with the strobes?

  6. Hey all, thanks for considering request. I tried the thread with IE and it didn't freeze, but some of the pics took almost a minute to load. I'm going to have a talk with my ISP.

Fasterfox sucked for me. It slowed me down. Getting rid of it was the best performance improvement I've made to Firefox.

  7. Could we possibly switch the Picture of the Week thread to a Picture of the Day

thread? The current threads literally freeze my browser due to picture quantity.

I'm on the latest release of Firefox and a decently powerful machine with 2 GB

of RAM. I can't be the only person who has problems with the threads. I pity the

    poor folks still on dial-up.

  8. Thanks guys. Guess I need to trade in my K100D Not-So-Super. I was trying to take pics of my kids last night when they were goofing around, and the camera was so far behind in AF that I missed many of the shots I wanted.

Now which wide lenses offer HSM, 'cause I'm gonna need to go on a lens buying binge if I upgrade the body.
