Thanks, Mike, Frank.
Mike, the batteries are fine. They work on other equipment .. remote controls, cd/mp3 players, etc.
The unit has a test button, and doesn't respond to it anyhow. it doesn't respond to anything .. even after recharging batteries again.
I never used shoe flash before, so the contacts on the camera's shoe mount could not be stripped or damaged either.

Hi. I am just a start up using DSLR and photographing in general
Got Nikon D40x and now bought a Bower SFD35N speedlight for it.
I am under the impression that the flash unit does not work, and I should return it to the store.
OR!!! I simply don' tknow what I am doing.
I charged 4 rechargable batteries and inserted. Flash worked 2 or 3 shots, and then I can't get it fire.
Maybe, I am not using the settings in the camera right?
Can someone please , objectively pin point of what may be the issue?
Or maybe, point to some tutorial website about these things?
Thanks,
Using a flash

I see ...
Thanks for the tip. I got it by looking at Amazon's user reviews.
Is there anything comparable to SB600, which would give some kind of $50 break in price and at the same time be usable?
If it's less than a $50 difference, I could as well, get SB600
