  1. I am looking for something entry level for Nikon D750, with something like 300mm+ capabilities.
Looked at Sigma 150-600, but it is unbearably huge, and I won't have ability to use.  So, I wanted to ask, if there is something smaller in bulkiness, but with the super photo range.
    I look at the Tamron 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 DI-II

But wanted to ask, if there is a problem using it on the full frame D750 ?  Is it quick to focus?
Anything else, you can recommend?  I am OK getting a very old used lens, as long as the autofocus is supported on my camera

  2. I am finding myself more and more running under the weather with my Nikon D750. Wanted to pick your brains on the need to protect it from the elements.

I plan to have that camera for a long time to come, and hence shading $20-$40 on protecting it from the weather seems a worthy investment.

    So,

question #1: Is it worthy investment ? Should I even be concerned with it ? Or can I just rely on the weather sealing of the camera ?

question #2: So, if I will go with the protection for the camera, should I get a silicon case for it? Or is it better to get a rain cover ? For either case, what are the options anyone can recommend ?

    Thanks.

  3. I am planning a trip from NYC to ...

    - One destination is I want to take a auto-road to Mt. Washington, New Hampshire.

It is a road trip, and I am riding solo with my camera, tripod and 3/4 lenses. Planning to make it more of a photo trip

I would like to visit other places and need advice, what can I grab on the way there.

I have 6-7 full days. I have never been to those parts, and I have never been to Vermont either.

So, I would like an advice, on where to go for photo opportunities. My topics of interest are mostly in Nature and wildlife, but also in the general street and event photography as well. So, if anyone knows of any festivals or such going on in those parts, please let me know.

Would it be advisable to go visit Rhode Island, or is the time I have is too narrow for that ?

  4. In our times, it seems appropriate to ask such questions before acting.

I have few photographs, well a set of photographs that I made on the photographing nature, and the set frankly and openly depicts "Natural selection" in the world of birds. Depiction may be somewhat "very frank" or some would say "graphical".

I like to think of photography as an art, and not a form of entertainment, and art has to be honest. So, would it be acceptable to post such photos publicly ? How ca I tell the right from wrong channels through which to display such work ?

  5. So, Yes. It was some settings. I went through all the screens, and reset all the custom menus everywhere.

Now, I gut the multiple exposure working. Unfortunately, I still can't tell what caused the problem :( And it is likely i might turn those setting on again, and I won't know what it was

  6. Are you possibly set on Auto? It grays out there, works in M,A,S,P. Just tried it in A - interesting, not a feature I had used before.

Detailed info p 216 in the camera manual.

Yes, of course, I tried in all the settings. And I do not use 'Auto' - mostly manual and 'A' and 'S'.

However, could it be that some settings, defaults everything to 'Auto' somewhere ?

  7. I am struggling with the problem on my Nikon D750 when trying to enable Multiple Exposure.

I used it at some point in the spring, and got to liking it, so trying to do projects with it, but suddenly something happened and it is disabled.

Trying to enable it at various settings in a camera, I get the error message like this

"This option is not available at current settings or in the camera's current state"

I tried at different settings, I did "reset shooting menu"

All the different settings are tried are those that I usually / always use. It is very unlikely that when it worked, I was at some setting that I do not use usually.

    Can anyone help ?

  8. I have participated in a friendly photo shoot.

Should I share my photos lower quality with the logo and wait to be contacted for a main - quality ones, or should I share main quality ones and run the risk of not being "needed" anymore?

    The story:

A friend of mine, invited me to take part in photographing a hairstyle model, who is his friend - (not mine).

We pooled the photos taken, and the idea of a shoot is that if there are any profit made, either by the model or by the hairstylist or by my friend or myself from these photos, then we split the profits. (We all helped each other with lights and setups and all, so we are not counting - just to split the profits if there are any)

Now, my essence of the matter:

    - My friend is not interested in good and quality photos. And he never strives to get perfectly good ones, He is sort of a hustler,

interested in quick money made from those who don't want to pay a lot for good quality photos, but rather pays some change for clicks.

    - I, on the other hand, would like to earn money, but for me the artistic quality is more important.

Both of us have day jobs, so making money from photography is not that main of a concern.

The model and the hairstylist are different story - they are both beginners in their respective trade and they do wish to make a career out of it and work toward that goal.

So, my friend collected bunch of pictures, unedited, with extra things in a compositions, some cut out heads.. etc...

And, I on the other hand, processed mine, and got a very good quality images. I got something, that I am not ashamed to show and give to the model and hair stylist, and that I think they can make good use of.

So, I made 2 copies of the final results, one - large JPegs with no logo (of mine) and one smaller resolutions with the logo, to use just to get myself into the door.

Which version should I share with the model and hair stylist ? I already gave them few high quality photos.

We have nothing signed, no verbal agreements, nothing of sorts.

    - should I give them the promo ones, and by this make an insinuation that "If you want the better, let's talk"

    or

    - give them the higher quality ones, and possibly I will never see them again ?

What are the "rules of the game" ?

  9. Hello community.

I am thinking about buying Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 for my Nikon D750

    Something about my "profile"

    - I have 24-120/f4 (So, weight of the Tokina does not scare me)

    - I have Prime 50mm f/1.8 lens

    - I don't specifically plan to make money on photography, so budget constraints are there.

So, ideally I am looking for something for

    - concert photos and landscape lens.

Can anyone share thoughts on the Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8

    - How good ? How fast is it in lower light conditions? f/2.8 is better than f/4, but .. is it enough ?

Also, how fast is its auto-focus?

  10. Hello, community

I am going to Spain at the end of September.

Wanted to ask if people can suggest what a photographer can get out of a 7 day trip there.

No specific itinerary yet, just a plain ticket to Madrid.

I want to spent time hunting for sights to put in a frame rather than shopping or dining.

I understand there are beautiful cathedrals and such, so if anyone can suggest a time in a day and a location spots where to take pictures, that would be most appreciated. As part of a vacation experience, I want to be taking trains in there, travelling from place to place, so it is not just one city I am interested in

  11. Can anyone here help or direct me to some resources to understanding flash photography and flashes...

There are so many features on the flash, but I am not aware on how to and what maybe more important - why to use them

I have a very old, Nikon SB-600 and Yongoo (910.. something)

Have no manuals for either, but ,, never the less. I understand the words on the controls, but I do not know what I may need that or this button for,

What I am asking is: How can I design my mental path, to know that for this-that -and-such, I would need to do certain things on the flash ? SO the question is not really about how to use a flash technically, but more on what does it do for me, and do I recognize the need for a particular feature ?

    Maybe books/articles ? any educational resources ?

  12. Forget the 35 DX lens. On your D750, you would be giving up a lot. Your D750 would be operating in DX mode.

If you want that "normal lens" look then get the 50/1.8.

I personally would go for the 35/1.8 AF-S lens to complement your 24-120/4.

However the 35 is not a portrait lens nor a concert lens, it is a fast wide angle lens.

However, even the 85 may not be a portrait lens. The lens used for portrature depends on several variables; how tight or loose do you want the shot, how far are you from the subject, how far is the subject from the background, etc. In the old days, the 105 was considered the standard portrait lens. But the 105 is not as FAST as the 85/1.8 for LOW light concert pics.

But, you need to think about what you want your final prime kit to be.

    Example1, if you want a 24 + 50 + 105 kit, then getting the 35 would be a waste.

Example2, if you want a 35 +85 kit, then the 35 makes sense.

When I say "final prime kit," as Shun said, you won't get them all NOW, but one at a time over several years. That is how many of us built our lens kits, over many years.

The problem with the AF and AF-D lenses is the new Z cameras. The current FtoZ adapter will NOT autofocus the AF and AF-D lenses. So you would have to manually focus these lenses on the Z cameras. If you do NOT intend to get a Z camera, then the lack of AF/AF-D autofocus on the Z isn't an issue.

Thank you. As i mentioned, portraiture occurs less often then concerts. Using 24-120/f4, for portraits i feel i can do better with lower f-stop, but for concert, i feel it is not usable at all.

  13. The 85mm/f1.8 G AF-S lens is a good choice for portrait. Perhaps add a 24mm/f1.8 AF-S also.

Thank you. But given, I can only afford one, would it not keep limited ?

So, for example: Would it be perfect for portraits, and very useful for concerts? Or will I be limited in concert settings with it, and would need something shorter?

I do concert probably more often than portraiture ...

  14. 35 mm is always 35 mm, whether FX or DX. A DX lens has a smaller image circle, and will vignette badly if used on an FX camera. Due to the cropping factor of the smaller sensor, a 35 mm lens will have roughly the same field of view as a 50 mm lens on an FX camera.

Any lens in the range of 24 mm to 90 mm is useful for landscapes, in fact I find I use a focal length of 50 mm for half of my shots. I have lenses covering 16 mm to 400 mm, but these aren't used as much as the range I cited.

I suggest you consider a 24-70 zoom with an f/4 aperture. It's smaller, lighter and half the cost of an f/2.8 lens, and in fact, than a set of prime lenses to cover the same range, F/4 is more than adequate for routine photography. Your second lens might be a 70-200, also f/4 for the same reasons.

    Thank you, for the reply.

I do have the Nikon 24-120 f/4 - done that. Great, sharp lens, I love it. It is not suitable for me in the concert settings ... a bit dark. I can use, but I am limited to certain type of photos that I get. Want to expand on that. Hence, were the questions.

70-200 would come later, though .. money wise, I am not ready yet.

About 35mm, I understand about vignetting, and hence the questions were .. should I keep the 35mm, with its limited use, and what I can from it, and not buy the 50mm ? and go with some other instead ? Or is 50mm would be so good, that I should forget about that 35mm (DX) that I have ?

Would an FX 35mm be better and more suitable ?

  15. 35mm DX won't work in full frame. The 35mm DX is equiv to a 50mm in full frame.

My 2c. Moving forward I would look at the newer versions rather than the AF-D lenses, the glass it quite a bit improved ... I would personally go with the AF-S F1.8 versions better bang for dollar than the F1.4.

It works, that's what I meant. It becomes 50mm (or so) and so I question if it is worth buying a 50mm, and forgetting the existing 35mm dx? Or would it be better to buy, le's say - an 85mm... or a FX-35mm ?

  16. So, basically I am at loss:(

Want to buy a prime lens for D750... but can't decide on what is more optimal solution

Money wise - one lens for now. Maybe later on, I get more, but for now - it is only one.

    My dilemma:

    I have a Nikon 24-120/f4

I like shooting (a) concerts (b) outdoors - nature, landscapes, etc.. and © Sometimes when I get a chance - portraits, model, fashion. (not in a studio but ... twice, I went to the studio with the friend, and I am starting to like it. Though, this move is not in immediate plans. I just go out with models in various settings and take pictures on streets, outdoors again, or bar settings

The help I need with 2 things.

First, - what is a better focus distance for the first prime:

    a) - 28-35mm

    b) - 45-50-55mm (60??)

    d) - 85-90mm?

I already own Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm from my DX-format days. I kind of can use it on my D750.. but I get win-getting ...

But if someone can suggest a solution for that ... I understand that this lens may become a 50mm on the FX,,, So still .. any advice, please ?

Second dilema that I have, is that in the attached images, I try to compare models and do not understand if the difference worth the price. I group them by categories.

I understand that the G lens is ultimately a D lens, and that an AF lens will auto focus on the D750 camera that I have as much as AF-S lens. Question is

Is the ED lens so much better to justify the $200 difference in price (on a 35mm category in pictures bellow) ?

Is the f1.4 so much better than 1.8 in a 50mm category?

And .. what is the real difference in the 85mm category? I think the $1.6K is also an ED lens...

    - I can make myself afford the 50mm for a $400, but is it worth, given I already have the 35mm DX?

    - I can stretch and save some lunch money to go the the 35mm ED lens for $600, or

    - with cheaper version of 85mm .. (unfortunately no $1.6K) ..

    - And given my interests I mentioned above, what would be the more optimal choice ?

Now, I do not limit myself to Nikon, ... if you think Tamron or Sigma in a certain focus distance category is better for the same price .. please do advise.

  17. Sports, people, journalism, art, documentary . . . Where are your interests? Are you in a city or out in the country? Do you realize that "photographic skill" is pretty low on the list of requirements for a photographer? The same goes for a "full frame camera and lens". I've worked with crop cameras for almost 20 years and Michael Kenna recently published a book of Holga photographs. Where have you looked? What have you done?

I did not mean to sound as if I bought a full frame camera in order to start doing business.

My interest are in .. I suppose it can all be called documentary.

I mostly shoot concerts and events. Some street photography too.

What do you mean, when you say "Where have you looked"? I vaguely understand that I will need to "present myself" somehow to some publishers or make myself "visible" by some means. (If this is what you mean). But .. I do not know how to approach...

  18. Hello, community

I am getting some ideas that it is about time I start realizing some material gain from my hobby as a photographer. Over the past years I have invested quite a deal into equipment and recently purchased first full frame camera with lens, and plan for some other lenses to invest into in near future.

I photograph just about anything. Where do I start looking to find if there are opportunities to make money on what I do? I honestly do not know where to start....

  19. And to continue the story of buying the first FX camera .. I found one for an OK price at B&H and when I came home I found out that the shutter speed is sooo high.To give an idea ... I use DX7000 since 2013 and I do not deny myself taking a shot when I feel like it. So, I would expect that my DX would have a high shutter count. 37000. The D750 I bought at B&H had ... 73000 !!! It looked as a brand new though. ...

it got me scared. I returned the camera.

Few weeks down the road, I landed a deal at Adorama for even slightly smaller amount. Camera looks brand new and .. surprisingly shutter count is only .. 2800.

Can anyone explain, how such a good camera, can be in a used market with such a low shutter count ? Is there a trick somewhere ?

  20. Thank you all.

I ended up finding an OK price on a used D750

Well ... I can afford to spread the expense for .. about a year or so. So.. I will manage. The quality and "stunning-ness" of photos that come out is what has got me in.

It is sooo impressive. For example, a photo attached here, is out of the box with no processing at all. And I did use the DX (16-80) lens.

To tell the truth, I feel slighly limitted with DX on a FX body, but I think I can get used to using that middle rectangle. At least till I save a little more for a fx lens. DSC_0201.thumb.jpg.14798cdf63db4969b75cdae723b881e2.jpg

  21. Thanks ...

People here keep telling to upgrade the lenses.

I am looking at the available DX lenses, from Nikon, Tamron and Sigma, and I am not seeing what better can I get in addition to the list I mentioned I have:

    Nikon 16-60/2.8-4

    Nikon 55-300

    Nikon 35mm/f1.8

To me this list of lenses, looks as exhaustive as it can get for the DX outfit.

  22. I am heading to Acadia national park on Friday August 10, driving from NYC to Schoodic Woods Campground, (non stop, well .. will stop to eat and fuel up) where my first night is planned.

I plan to spend the full saturday, sunday, monday, tuesday and wednesday half day in Acadia.

And then on Wednesday afternoon I plan to start heading back. to NYC, but this time with the plan to see the Maine cost line, and surrounding areas.

I do not have any particular plans, and would like to catch the gems that I can catch.

Can anyone help me build a itinerary with photo opportunities ?

I want to photograph nature, landscapes, wildlife if I can find it.

I will bring either Nikon D7000 with 55-300 and 16-85 lens, or (if I can finish the purchase in time), the D610 with 24-120 lens.

I will have a tripod. But this is a vacation, so I would prefer not strain myself too much carrying tripod to a strenuous hikes.
