  1. Will todays announcements make canon move faster or come with a camera that really answers my needs. I've long

wanted a digital EOS 3. Seems Nikon built in instead of Canon. I've been saying that 12mp is more than enough

for a year. I've been saying I don't need 10/sec for a year. It seems that nikon has built the 1D3 I wanted

(without the grip which i like but i can live without)

This is not me flaming - this is me hoping Canon has an answer - I don't want to give up my glass but with each

new camera it gets harder. My MarkII is getting really long in the tooth and I can see the difference between my

shots and those of the guys with the new cams especially in shadow detail

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me hear soon that Canon has something Big and dramatic up their sleeves soon...

  2. the biggest problem to me is that (at least in nyc) the full frame lenses have been almost impossible to get your hands on...

As a canon shooter that has been considering the switch (the biggest thing holding me back is nikons lack of great fast primes - hopefully being fixed) this camera is perfect for what i want. Having shot a 1D2 for the last 4 years and a 1D before that with L glass all around I was underwhelmed by the 1D3 and that was before all the "issues" I waited and hoped for a camera similar to the old EOS 3 - either a 1D4 full frame at 12mp (basically a D3) or a 5D2 with a better body and faster autofocus...Seems Nikon has built that camera in this D700. But it bring me back to the fact that B/H has not had a 24-70 in stock in over a month or a 70-200 -

I hope with this announcement Nikon can up the production on the lenses that go with the FX cameras and barring Canon making a big shot across the bow with a new 5D/1D4 very soon...I think I'll be moving across the enemy line...

One way or another - congrats to all of you for having what looks to be an amazing camera in the near future

  3. i realize after reading that over again that it sounded meaner than i intended...and i thank you for being polite about your response.

For me it really comes down to if you are going to continue to use aps-c cams - if so I think the 17-55 is the no brainer...

if not I would go with the 24-70 in order to pick up the stop and the bokeh...though some have pointed out the bokeh at f4 at 105 is actually equal to if not more than the 70 at 2.8 that won't help if the subject moved a bit in your 20th of a second shot...

    good luck

  4. i have an opinion on the lenses but first I have to say that five years ago you would never had seen anyone that didn't know which lens to buy saying they were shooting weddings. It used to be you worked your way up to it...you interned/second shot/apprenticed etc with an established shooter until you had enough experience and knowledge to know what you needed to do in order to get the job done. There is a reason most unions have apprenticeships - so that you can learn from others and then begin to really make money. None of this is directly aimed at you but the market for pro photographers that spent years honing their craft has been destroyed by people that think that they can just grab a camera and say "i'm a pro"

In any event - the 17-55 is probably the better choice if you are going to stay with aps-c sized cameras...

  5. That is not true -

Nikon has a 1 year international and Canon has none...

All Canon USA products carry a 1 Year warranty in the USA - if you happen to get a cooperative Canon employee somewhere else in the world that will cover it is luck. My understanding of the Sagemax as opposed to the other warranties of that ilk is that it does cover accidental damage which is something that neither canon or Nikon will cover one way or the other...

  6. everyone that buys at the store pays tax. it has nothing to do with where you live but where you buy. if you mail it out of a state where the company does business then the company does not collect sales tax but it is still "legally" your responsibility to pay the tax in whatever municipality you live in...that's the theory at least. For B/H if you live outside NYC and do mail order - including ordering in the store but having it sent to another state you do not pay tax with your purchase...
  7. most people these days are just asking any friend that happens to be coming to the states to pick it up for them..

The lines at B/H are full of non-American accents these days with everyone taking advantage of the weak dollar. If you know anyone that will be coming anytime soon I know most companies will allow you to buy over the phone and pick up at the store to make sure the lens is waiting for you if you happen to be coming to the states...

    good luck

    great lens

  8. I am going to try to spare you a litany of angry reponses - first thing you need to do is read the book. then maybe read it again with the camera in your hand.

The simple answer is you need a card just like you needed film.

  9. they are not going to drop the price of the xti body 200 dollars - they were already almost gone from the shelves.

B/H hasn't had any kits in stock in a month and only silver bodies...

this new camera as I said before is a direct shot across the bow of nikon. When the 40d goes back to 1140 for body it leaves you with this -

    40d - 1140

    xsi - 800

    xs - 600 (ish)

for the consumer that has been buying d40's and low end sony/olympus cameras that 200 is a big deal...

that I'm sure is what canon is thinking...if it's 600 ish with the IS lens it's a nice deal. Someone mentioned a price with the old 18-55 but that lens was discontinued a bit back so that is strange - I'll assume like the 28-135 40D packs it's their way of dumping old stock...

  10. discontinued

they don't ever keep two flashes at same time - while supplies last I assume they will drop a tiny bit but you can assume canon will not deliver large quantities to retailers while the old flash is still around...that has been policy for as long as i can recall ex the xti's have been moving out of stock and not replaced and then we get this announcement. The new 430 comes right after the rebates and canon moving tons of old 430's out this last month...

  11. this explains why the xti has been out of stock at b/h for about a month - this looks like a grand slam if they price it similar to the d60 as it has lots of features that the d60 does not...

This is canon striking back at nikon (more so than any pro camera ever will be) as this is the majority of the market...

  12. Well you could always grab a set of pocket wizards or elinchrome remotes and fire the flash that way - the elinchromes are really nice and cost half as much as the pw's - the only downside with teh 580 is that it doesn't have a built in pc cord plug in so you have to buy some adaptors - all cheap. The upside to radio is that it's not line of site...you can fire it up to 150 feet or more...
  13. the issue seems to be you are not focusing on the eyes. If that is what you want in focus then that is what your focus point should be. I know that sounds overly simple but select a single focus point. Lock the focus and recompose so that the eyes are sharpest. F4 is going to produce a bit of bokeh (the out of focus look) so you may want to start exploring 5.6 or even higher depending on the look you are looking for. In my own work i want a shallow depth of field 80% of the time and 90% of the time I just focus on the eyes and then compose knowing that a good portion of the image won't be in true focus but that is often what I am looking for...
