On days when I feel shy, I will shoot with a longer lens. But sometimes the easiest thing to do is approach your subject and ask them if they mind being photographed. Usually, they are kind and oblige. However, often times right before I do this I will snap a couple photos without them knowing, just in case they are mean and say no.

Also, try long exposures using the ambient stage lights. This almost always creates an interesting photo with all kinds of lights and skewed images.

I would focus more on the constructive criticism posted than the number scores. If there are no comments, ask a friend, co-worker or fellow photographer their ideas on the photos in question.

I have a Nikon D70 and bought the Nikkor 24-85mm 1:2.8-4 D lens separately 5 years ago for about $500. I use this lens all the time, and found it was very versatile when travelling.

I believe that in some cases cropping can improve a photo. In my opinion, the examples you provided are more interesting as originals, uncropped. For example, in both shots, the lighting and buildings are a beautiful background.
