Sandrian Camera in Morristown, NJ used to do camera classes. Call them and see if they still do. http://sandrian.com/

The Cornice on a dorm on my school's campus collapsed Monday morning. A few tons on concrete fell 6 stories to the ground below, and luckily, for a busy Boston street right by a school at 8 30 in the morning, nobody was hurt at all. If it was a half hour earlier when classes were just starting it would have been a much different story. Of course it was orientation, so I spent the better part of a half hour when I was shooting for the paper to calm down a few mothers that no, this doesn't happen all the time to brownstone buildings.

Baseball Beanpot at Fenway Park in Boston, MA was on Monday. Northeastern finally stopped choking in the final moments of any game to walk away with a 5-3 win over UMass.

Baseball Beanpot at Fenway Park Monday night. This is UMass vs Northeastern University. NU won (yay!) 5-3. It was my first sports game in awhile that I wasn't there as a photographer from my paper. It was nice to just sit and enjoy the game for once, and take photos on my own terms. Plus Fenway was nearly empty, so I could wander around and take the 'artsy' photos that you usually can't get there because of the crowds.

Hello all-
I was walking back to my dorm this evening, and saw this bird on the ground. I've never seen it before, so I was wondering if anyone else knows what this bird is. I am located in Boston, MA. Both my roommate and I have seen this bird a few times in the past few weeks but this is the first time i've had my camera with me. It seems to freeze as you walk up to it. I'm thinking it's some kind of shore bird that lost its way, it seems to have that same low run as a few other shore birds.

@ Andrew Lynn- Great shot! I'm so jealous that you got to go to opening day! I live a few blocks away, and I can't wait until next sunday when I go for my first game of the season.
@ Brian Sprague- I spent the last few summers in Northern California in the Westwood/Susanville area working on my Aunt&Uncle's ranch. That's such a beautiful shot of the valley, it looks so peaceful.
I just did a quick adjustment in Camera Raw through Bridge. I just played around with the sliders until something looked pleasing. Someone here will probably do a better job though.

hello all,
my friend's D50 was stolen/lost this past weekend, and we are trying to figure out a way to find the serial number to include it in the police report. I have looked in the EXIF data for my d200 and can't find anything to help her, so I have turned to you to see if anyone has any ideas of how to find it.
Thanks so much!

When i've shot hockey, i shoot an f/2.8 with a shutter speed of 1/1250, ISO 1600. You want a faster shutter speed because the light reflecting off the ice makes the camera think it's brighter then it is. If you want less noise, you can drop the shutter speed, but I usually shoot with this.
Nick-
Do you mind if I ask you what store that was? I used to work at a camera store in New Jersey with a Lego/train table for
the kids to play at, and I really hate to see that store go.
unfortunately, this is a huge trend. Everyone is moving to online. Which is a sad sad time for photographers. I always
loved going into that store (before I was an employee) because of the atmosphere. It was a much better experience for me
as a (very) amateur photographer at that time then an online store would have been.

I recently shot a gig for the band I work for, and I encountered some interesting results. The combination of a red background and warm
lighting caused all other tonal values to be pretty much erased, and everything had a red tinge to it. I am shooting another gig for them this
weekend, and the background will be red again. I'm not sure of the color of the lights, but is there something i can do in the camera to
change this so I don't have weird looking photos again. These are shot RAW, Nikon D200, 50mm f/1.4 at 1/80 of a sec ISO 500. The first
photo is straight out of the camera, and the second is what I recovered in photoshop.

thanks for everyone's responses! i ended up buying the 50mm 1.4 since i can't afford the 30mm right now. i will probably buy the 28-75 soon because i still like the idea of that lens, and if i continue to do with the bands, i'll probably buy the 30mm down the line. i'm happy to have my 50mm again, my mother (my unwilling test subject) was not haha
thank you again for all of your comments and suggestions!

you know- when i shot with my dad's old film SLR, the lens i had on it 90% of the time was the 50mm 1.8, and i completely forgot that that was an option. duh. i think i might go for that. i work in a camera store and we have both the 50mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.4 on hand, is the 1.4 worth the extra $170 or so dollars?

I just bought a D200 from a good friend of mine, and i was hoping to upgrade my lens before i went back to
school. I currently have an 18-70 nikkor lens on it which i adore. However, when i'm at school in boston i
shoot a few band gigs and do a lot of low light work. this leads me to a conundrum on which lens to get. so far
i have it narrowed down to the following:
Promaster 18-50 f/2.8
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 (leaning towards this one)
Tamron 28-300 VC f/3.5-6.3
Nikon 18-200 VR f/3.5-5.4
i had an 18-200 on my canon rebel that i just upgraded from and i loved the focal length to death, so i'd like to
get the same, but i don't know if i have the money to get both a 2.8 and the 18-200. do you think i'll be able
to get sharp photos from the 18-200 (or 28-300 but i think i'm going to want that wide angle) in a club/low light
given how well the d200 performs in low light, or should i just get the 28-75 and wait on the 18-200?
thank you so much!

Went on a touristy walk with my mother through Boston this weekend as she helped me move into my new apartment. Found this wall of dog-tags symbolizing all those who have died in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.
