  1. I am the happy owner of a 10D. I've been shooting jpegs and would like to start

shooting Canon RAW with imbedded Jpegs. The Canon software is really slow. I use

a Mac and would like to know how others handle the conversion. I now use a Mac

with OS X and store my jpegs iphoto. Iphoto won't handle RAW files. What is a good

way to store, catalogue and retreive RAW files?

  2. The dust particle in your lens is very common. If it doesn't affect your pictures it is

nothing to worry about. Lens are not air tight. If you haven't tried stretch a piece of

string taught across your lens and look through the viewfinder. I bet you won't even

    see it.

  3. This url to simonhobbs is interesting. I can't tell if the tests were done in a mode

expecting the camera to select the appropriate AF sensor or if the photographer was

selecting the sensor manually. I got a 10D last week and have been using it and have

not had any focus problems. I select the AF sensor I want manually and lock on that

and shoot. I don't think I would be happy letting the camera select the AF sensor. I

want more control than that with a camera like the 10D. But perhaps the tests

described in the simonhobbs web page were done that way -- but that is not clear.

  4. I am new to digital photography and love it. I find myself taking many more pictures

than I did with film and want to set up a sound workflow. I can't see saving

everything on my hard drive. It isn't really the storage although that's an issue but

it's more why have thousands of mediocre images. I find myself loading the flash

card through my Zio flash card reader and then moving the keepers to iphoto (I use a

Mac) and reformating the card and starting anew. I was wondering what others do

and why. One thing I was considering was just saving everything on the card to a CD

and treating that as if it were a digital negative. I would very much welcome the

    thoughts and experiences of others.

  5. I am a new 10D owner and love the camera. I want to buy software to convert RAW

files conveniently. I use Photoshop 7. I know Adobe has a plug-in but am not sure if

it works with the 10D. Any other suggestions? I am a Mac user. Thanks.

  6. I would add that I have a Canon S50. It is not as fast as a Leica M but it is fast. It has

a small lens and the AF is pretty fast. The images are stunning and the camera is

small and offers quite a bit of control. Worth considering IMHO.

  7. I took this very same workshop last summer in Rockport. Costa is a very warm and

approachable teacher. I learned about composition for the first time in my life. At

the end of the workshop you will know instinctively what is right and wrong about an

image and you will never forget it. Enjoy and please give Costa my warm regards.

  8. After much research and internal debate, I made the switch from a PC (Dell) to a Mac.

I have a PowerBook G4 and a G5 on order. I sent back a top of the line Dell laptop.

The key thing for me is OS X. It is a joy. You tell the computer to start -- it starts

quickly and without a lot of fuss. You tell it to shut down and it does the same. It is

quiet, stable and fast. I am not an expert in the speed wars and I didn't decide to

switch to Apple because of speed. I much prefer the stability of OS X to XP. The very

first night I had the new Dell laptop I had two blue screens. The PowerBook just does

what I need it to do without fuss. I now see why Apple customers often are so

devoted. It is not a matter just of price and speed and technical considerations. I

encourage you to try both and decide which system you will actually enjoy using

more. After trying both I much prefer the Mac.

  9. Dr. Knapp,

I have done business with Rich Pinto for several years. I have bought equipment from him and sold equipment with him. He is very honorable and knowledgeable. I recommend him highly. And he has moved aggressively into digital gear which I believe any dealer must do in order to survive in the current and future marketplace.

  10. This is a great lens. It is heavy though. I personally found I did not use it much because of its weight and sold it. But if you are comfortable with the weight and the price there is no reason not to buy it. From your posting I have the sense that you really do want it in your aresenal. Happy shooting!
  11. I too am switching both from film to digital and from Nikon to Canon. Based on my research, I decided that Canon is the leader in digital cameras and makes fine lenses and that is likely to remain so. I plan to get a 10D in the near future and am deciding on my first lens. I had and sold the Nikon 28-70 AFS f2.8. This was a wonderful lens optically but too heavy for me. It stayed home a lot. I believe the 24-70 is about the same weight. Although the range on the 10D would be perfect I don't want a lens that is too heavy again. My other choices are the 16-35 f2.8 and the 17-40. If I go wider I may also buy a 50 mm lens for portraits on the 10D. I would very much welcome thoughts and observations.
  12. Peter,

In response to your question, Costa Manos uses a Leica M6. His main lens is the 35 mm summicron. He also sometimes uses a 28 and a 50. I was a student in a workshop Costa taught at the Maine Photographic Workshops. He is a wonderful teacher. He told us the only lens you really need is the 35. He considers the 50mm lens his telephoto.

I love the shadows and the colors in these images. They make statements that I cannot put into words. I think this is an important function of art and photography.

  13. I received the following e-mail the other day. The award is well

deserved. Costa is a great photographer and a very nice man.

Magnum photographer Constantine Manos is the 2003 winner of the Leica

Medal of Excellence, the annual photography award presented by Leica

Camera AG of Solms, Germany. The winner was chosen from a field of

    250

entries worldwide, and the decision of the judges was unanimous. The

award was given for a series of ten related images made between 1999

    and

2002 and was based primarily on the basis of aesthetic impact. The

series was judged as a whole.

  14. I wanted to post a follow-up message describing my experience with Dell. I ordered and received a Dell laptop with 1GIG of memory and a 2.3 or so GH processor. The OS was XP Pro. I had two "blue screens" the first day and sent the machine back and have an Apple Powerbook on order. I decided to switch not only because of the blue screens but because there is an Apple reseller about a mile from my home that actually is there to help people and to fix them if they break. Getting someone on the phone to help with Dell was a challenge I don't ever want to repeat. I hope to receive the Powerbook in the coming week. If I like it I will get an Apple desktop. The salesman suggested waiting on the desktop because there is a rumor Apple will release the G5 later this month.

Again, thank you all for your help. It has been quite a journey for me and "switching" does feel like a big step.
