1. Thanks everyone for you perspective. Andrew's most of all. Yes, Wouter I was trying to make up my mind whether to keep it. I bought the lens primarily for video and the narrow depth of field and because the price was too good to pass up. As most of you probably know you only have one shutter speed in video and you need NDs to pre-select your f stop if it's too bright outside. I've decided to keep the lens and rent a 6.6" matte box when necessary as I already have a full set of 6.6" NDs.

The lens is sharp enough wide open and very sharp at 2.8.

    Thanks again.

  2. The 200mm f2 AIS accepts filters in a rear drawer; the AI does not. I have the AI. Front filters in that size (122-138?) are probably impossibly expensive.
  3.
I have the Z-Finder EVF Pro, which includes the z-finder loupe and an evf; and a D810. There are lcd frames that let you attach the loupe to your lcd. I have found this to be useful for stills using live view in bright sunlight and of course for video. The evf will allow you to get low angle shots. I like the focus peaking on the evf for focusing manual focus lenses.
In my experience the only con is the increased profile of your camera/rig.

  4.
Thanks Les. I'm inclined to agree that single filters are probably better. While the 145mm filters are large they're really not that expensive. About $110.00 each on sale. I agree that the 14-24 will have wider depth of field than longer, and/or faster lenses, but the zoom is more versatile and total depth is only two feet at 24mm, at 2.8, focused at five feet. It's also the best wide angle lens I have right now. A smaller lens would cost more than a couple of filters.
Some days it's so bright outside that I can only open up to 5.6 with my four stop ND at ISO 64.
Thanks again for the discussion. It helps.

I bought the WonderPana Filter system to use with my Nikkor 14-24mm for video. The system consists of 145mm round filters and 168mm rectangular/square filters. There are two slots for mounting two 4mm rectangular filters at a time. You can also mount one round and one rectangular filter at a time. As you know at 24fps the shutter speed is always 1/50 of a second. In order to shoot with a narrow depth of field I need low ISO and ND filters in bright daylight.
Here’s the question, as I can’t stack the ultra slim 145mm ND filters(no front threads), should I buy separate two, three, four, and five stop 145mm filters to deal precisely with varying light levels, or would it be better to use square .3, .6., .9 and 1.2 ND that can be stacked? I already have one 4 stop 145mm ND. Thanks in advance.

  6.
Thanks, everyone. This lens was so cheap that even if I spent $200.00 to refurb it, that would still be less than the average used price. Found two vendors who say it can be repaired for $75-$100. No obvious signs of impact. Cosmetics 9 out of 10. Nothing else appears wrong. No fungus, a few specks of dust. It's sharp wide open.
Bought it with an eye to shooting video, so I may just invest the money in a follow focus device. Smooth focus isn't that big a deal to me for stills.
People regularly buy equipment "as is," and restore it or use it, as is. I don't see how a lens is that different. I wasn't looking for advice on keeping it. I was just looking for info on technicians who might be able to repair it. Thanks again.
7.
I just bought a used 50mm f1.2. The only mechanical problems seem to be an un-smooth focus ring-- loose on one end, tight on the other-- and a slightly loose fit on the camera body. Does anyone know who can repair for a reasonable amount of money? Thanks.
8.
CameraRC comes with a lifetime license for $20. You can also tether with LightRoom. You shouldn't need any program to project from your computer. You are just projecting the image from the tethering program/workspace.
