  1. G'Day people,

I have been thinking about this question for some time now and thought I would

run it up the flag pole and see where it goes.

Lately I have seen so many posts about no ratings, bad ratings bla bla bla bla

    bla bla bla!

I was so sick of seeing them I posted a joke one saying the same thing with a

    just kidding as the question.

Not well received either but who gives a ....

I personally think that this has been occuring due to desensitization.

Not the posts but the lack of crits, comments, rates bla bla bla bla bla.

My thinking is that as people if we see too much of something it then becomes

normal, agreed. Apply this to this terrific site and over time we will look

less, crit less, and even rate less. Multiply this by the number of people on

this site and you will eventually see a down turn in activity, possibly

    excluding uploads.

This desensitization has been occuring sinse time started, some examples for me

    are,

When my father was young there was a stage show that had naked woemen standing

motionless on stage, this was art! Don't laugh it is true, if they moved they

were arrested or could have been for a lude act. Now if they don't move there

is a riot, and they had better have waxed!

In the 60's A Clock Work Orange was rated R, now it would probably be PG, in

Aus if you have a gun in public everyone freaks and runs, in the US most would

say hmm nice peice. Look at enough nudes and you can't see art from porn and on

    it goes.

Now I have been told that over 1000 images are uploaded every day here, what

bettr way to get desensitized and loose interest in having a say because unless

it shocks or grabs you and shakes you it will blend into obscurity.

    What say you good folk?

  2. I think there is a break out of obsesive compulsive behaviour.

The amount of posts in the past few days is bordering on insanity.

If someone had just said please read below instead of repeating themselves on each post and complaining about it we would all be better off.

I also think people are just complainers , they constantly look for something to complain about, I proved it before and posted a similar heading just for a joke to see how quick it was responded too due to the obsesion, it was deleted within 2 min flat, proves my point!

  3. Don E.

I am at a loss as to why you think that me deleting images due to no response is an attitude limited to youth.

Thank you for not going to my page and looking at any of my images and seeing the one of my wife and I on hoilidays in Canada!

The section of bio that may have given you a hint to my age would refer to my daughter getting a 400d and how I still prefer film.

I always try to look up people when responding so I know who I am talking to, its called research and I do it so I feel like I am actually talking to someone not just some idiot on the internet, you know a personal connection.

The reason I deleted them was because I felt that they may not have been up to scratch but I sought a second opinion, as Lex stated in his post it speaks volumes if you get no response, so I took the hint and trimmed the tree a bit.

I see no problem with seeing the forest for the trees, perhaps you could do the same.

Another very good point was made about tone and how posts can be misinterpreted, my tone is cheeky and good humoured, but a little pointed.

  4. Hi all, sorry for the delay I had to sleep then work, what a pain.

Unfortunately I am not travelling, we did that over a year ago for the first time in 6 years. It will probably be another 6 before we do it again.

I was just asking to see how everyone else goes about it and maybe get some funny stories on how you went about it.

When Di and I did go we did all of the above, but once there we used photo books that are available in the gift shops, postcards were really handy to check and ask where that is, and looking where the buses were heading and going when they did not and driving a lot slower. Also we looked for people with bigger gear than us and spoke to them.

Many times we looked at a map and went totally off the highway as long as it eventually joined up again, it was much quieter that way.

  5. Hello again,

You save up and go to a country you have always wanted to go to. You know very

little and only know what you have seen on travel shows and seen in travel

    pictures.

You have a time limit of 3 days max in each place you want to see which are

iconic to that country, it is all self drive and a map and partner are your

only contact unless you stop for petrol or accomadation.

What do you use to find more of what you are looking for in order to shoot as

much as you can of the things you would love to see and experience? Lets limit

it to wildlife and landscape for this example?

  6. The last trip we did o/s we had 2 35mm film cameras, 19-35mm wide angle, 70-200mm zoom, 28-70mm zoom, 50mm 1.8, tripod, filters etc, all up I think it weighed 9kg including the waterproof backpack.

I carried it all day which was a pain sometimes but worth the versatility.

As a note we only used 2 lenses but if the 50mm was a macro I would have used it a lot. Don't skimp unless you are able to return later and redo the ones that did not work.

  7. Thanks for your help guys, just for your info it was taken with a Tokina 19 - 35 wide angle lens, what settings and shutter speed I do not remember. My guess is it was diffraction so now i need to go back and do some refresher reading to complement your advise, Thanks again.
  8. Thanks Tony, no I did not use mirror lock, there was a breeze so maybe it was most of the problem,

Thanks for the link Pete, I do use a film camera though but I am sure it will relate to it as well.

Hi Lex, I was using a Tokina wide angle zoom so f22 should not create a problem. It is the same lens I used in Canada with no real problem the majority of the time.

Its just frustrating when you try to use the tech details to get clear shots and they look muddy!

  9. Hi guys.

I have read many times that in landscape f22 is what you use if you want

    foreground and background in focus.

Now being me I tend to get a bit fixated with somethings and focus too much on

them and then become tunnel visioned.

Now I took a shot a while ago on the foreshore here in Perth at dawn with a

path leading off into the distance nice dawn colour and not much else, not what

I'd call a great shot but ok.

My problem is though that it was set at f22, on a tripod, and pretty much non

    of it is razor sharp!

Does the f22 theory break down in some circumstanses?

  10. It's not easy, it will take practice, you are worthwhile and you can acheive what ever you desire. Passion and determination will help you but you must not loose site of what you want, others will try to bring you down, negitive people are going knowhere and are dying to take you with them, DON'T LET THEM!
  11. Hi Doug,

I'm no expert but it is always said that the camera does not take great shots the photographer does, the camera just records the composition you choose.

I don't use any effects except for a couple of filters, but there are many more here that are more skilled than me from who you can learn.

  12. Lindsay, no unfortunately photography was not on my radar at that time , wish it had been, but a business with instant cashflow was needed to support the family.

Funny I have a staff member from the UK and she said the same thing about the work place situation, seems like they are still a bit sexist.

I would however approach some studios, I had been encouraged by a PNet member to do the same at one stage, life experience and gathered skills are important to a successful business no matter what industry, whats the worst that could happen, they say no?

    Nothing ventured nothing gained!

  13. Hi Lindsay,

It seems to be a common trait of the 4th decade, change everything you do and go for it, I think it use to be called a midlife crisis!

I had mine, left my job got some training with a company, sold everything and moved 4000Km across the country to own my own business, it all started when I was 39 and am now 47.

I have 2 loans 4 kids and a wife who does what I cannot, is it worth it, bloody oath if you want to control your own destiny, age is not a barrier it is what you need in order to take that challenge. Go for it!
