  1. Yes, You can; You have just to add a common slave-cell to the 430EX (to its hot-shoe) and of course, to set it for M-manual mode dialing the output like with the strobes.

Indeed, 430EX does have built-in slave-cell, but there is an electronic digital-filter right after the cell, in the inner circuit. This filter wants digital-encoded pulses of light as generated by a Master Speedlite's pre-flash (550EX 580EX ST-E2).

This is why EX-Speedlites won't react on common lightnings, they having built-in slave-cell even though.

  2. The main issue with Fluorescent sources is due to the fact that they turn ON/OFF and RED/GREEN tens of times in a second, so achieving sort of white-light.

Depending on the Frequency (Hz) of the final alternate-current powering the bulbs/tubes (after the Power-supply, then), if shutter-speed goes fast You randomly capture a portion only of the whole cicle.

The curtains also take their time to run the Focal-Plane, so the first curtain descovering the sx/dx sides of the frame along two different moments, also leads to differences; this is why the 'half image' issue reported by "Anne Almasy" already.

But usually, at 1/125 You MIGHT still capture something good. Are You shooting Film or Digital, Full or APS-C -frame?

  3. Before long time of a few use, Capacitors often want longer a time to get the first charge again.

Keep it (the Flash) turned ON time to time during five minuts nearly, along a couple of days.

With You Americans, this is called as "Reforming Capacitor"; made a research (Reforming Flash Capacitor).

    Bye fron Italy
