I noticed the same with my E-520: Very slow focusing whenever I use flash (either built in or external). It looks that the AF function hesitates quite a bit and changes too many times which makes it impossible to have a decent picture in these situations (you miss the shot most of the times because of the delay), unless you have your camera set to manual or use it without flash (it is faster then for some reason). I hope other users or someone from Olympus contribute with an answer or advice on how to use flash on auto mode and obtain quick focusing, metering, and decent pics... Otherwise, Olympus will not have a market in these low light situations....

Is it safe to use a Sunpak 383 Super shoe mounted on the Olympus E-520? I am not sure if the camera electronics could suffer or if the communication between camera and flash is appropriate. I am aware that Olympus sells 3 dedicated flash units, 2 with wireless option. But since I have older general use film camera flashes, would they work well on digital cameras? Thanks for your input...
Thank you all fort your reply. It is always helpful to read different opinions... We all learn from them. I bought the studio 2 and I am happy with what it can do... I also ordered the PhotoShop CS3. Hiopefully I will enjoy it and will be able to add to the studio 2 with more creative manipulation of some of the pics.... Thanks again..

Photographers who use this image editing software.. Could you please comment on your experience? How does it
compare to photoshop, PS element 3, lightroom 2.. etc.. Can you perform functions like merging two pictures or
using another picture for a background, etc... Strengths and Shortcomings? Thank you for your input..

This sounds wonderful Warren.. If you find it, please let us know about it... I just got a new 520 and would love to see if I can duplicate your results.. Inad

Thanks to all of you who have responded with valuable information. I just unpacked and performed preliminary test
on my new E-520. I am impressed so far. Soon, once I become very familiar with all its features, I'll try a few shots
in B&W and IR. I'll post some pics in the future. Thanks again..

Did anyone try to take Infra Red Photos with a digital camera? Please comment on results and settings used.. Did
you use a regular 25 Red filter or did you have to use the Hoya R72 or a different one? I just ordered an E-520 and
would like to experiment with this...
Also, would anyone comment on B&W pictures with the E-520 or its predecessors E-510 or 420.. etc..
Thanks

How about a Fuji FinePix S100FS? It is features full and would give you more than you are asking for.. It is not a true DSLR but the closest to it with more features than most DSLR within a budget..
-
Thank you Ralph for your candid review. I hope other owners of S100FS will also give their reviews. Would anyone care to comment about the software that is supplied with this camera for viewing/ editing/ post processing? Thanks again..

Is there anyone who actually bought and is using the Fujifilm Fine Pix S100FS? Please comment on your
experience with this camera and how do you rate it? Would you recommend it? How does is actually compare in real
life to real D-SLR's like Nikon D200/300 or D40/80, or even to a Fuji S5 Pro? A few people have commented on the
published features which seem outstanding and offer much more than what you expect from its class. Is it worth for
the price, the range of its lens, and how have your results been shooting in low light? Thanks for your input..

I would use a fuji S6000fd. Looks professional. Low light capacity. High zoom.. excellent overall.

Is there any tutorial or reference to teach / master techniques of
digital dark room in terms that correspond to their counterparts in
the wet darkroom? I have been heavily involved in traditional
darkroom processing and find it difficult to follow books or
journals that use standard digital terminology. I wish one could
find better manuals that address specifically how to accomplish a
task digitally, strictly from the point of view of its equivalent in
the traditional darkroom... Thanks

You can use Kodak Ektamax paper to be processed in RA chemistry.. Or any traditional B&W paper processed in regular B&W chemicals, but it take much longer exposure times. I do it all the time with wonderful results...

Thank you all for your helpful comments.. It sounds very challenging indeed...

Anybody with experience with Microtek Scanmaker 6800 cares to share
your experience using this scanner? Any reliable reviews out there?
How does it compare to other available scanners for medium format
and 4x5? Thanks

It might even repair any damage to these negatives..... (Have you seen "My Big Greek Wedding"?)....

Before you make your final decision, look into the real heavy duty tripods and heads made by Quickset in Il. (like Simson or Hercules). I have been very pleased with mine (Simson) and found it very convenient and secure to work with my 4x5 Cambo NX monorail.
-
I also use a similar lens on my 4x5 camera. It is a very good lens. Best of luck and take many beautiful pictures....

I couldn't find any discussion or comment regarding the suitability
and stability of a Heavy Duty Samson tripod made by Quickset in IL
for a heavy 4x5 (like a Cambo NX)or larger camera. If anyone
currently uses one, please comment. I tried several tripods but
found them unpractical as they shift slightly after I focus and while
I am inserting the film carrier. I just purchased a HD Samson on E-
bay and hope it will do the job better then the other ones I have.

Jim: I use Neopan 400 and I love it. Assuming that you are using a fresh developer solution, it sounds that you need to increase the developing time you used (I'd try 20% more and see the results on a test strip). If your solution was not fresh, try another roll with a fresh solution at the recommended dilution. I use T-Max developer and love the results.

Considering change from Canon to Olympus

I have the E-520 with 3 lenses 14-42, 40-150 and 70-300. I have been extremely pleased with both the light weight and the quality of the photos taken, except with flash in low light (way too long to focus and fire)- But I use flash very rarely. You can't go wrong with Oly unless you need to shoot a lot of events in low light using flash..
