  1. <i>"It looks like you took this shot and could not place it in any catagory and so dumped it into SP(:>)"</i>

    <br>

    <br>

    Hi Philip, no I did not dump it. I did not even ask myself the question of whether another Gallery should be appropriate for this photo. Having said that, you did not answer my question : <b>in which of PN Gallery would you suggest it should have been posted ? </b>. Oh but I forgot, you probably have never ask yourself this question, as you don't post any photo, I am sorry...

    <br><br>

    PS : reason why I have chopped her head off is not your call but mine only. Your call is only limited to like, dislike, or be indifferent, or hate it - and rate 3/3 (:->)

    PPS : the real duming ground for me is Abstract.....

  2. I have to apology ;-) I have posted a photo of "legs only" recently..... and I have categorised it under SP. But Philip, in which Gallery would you suggest to be posted ? "Other forums do not have this problem" is probably because a portrait is a portrait, a child is a child, an animal is an animal, and a nude is a nude. SP is a bit more difficult to define. You may all have your "noble" definition of what SP is, but I think a bit of tolerance is also needed. If some of us were Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Alfred Eisenstaedt, W. Eugene Smith, William Eggleston, Brassaї, Willy Ronis, Robert Doisneau and Garry Winogrand, we probably would not be here on PN discussing those things.

    If one accepts that SP is a type of documentary photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, and other settings, that leaves margin for intepretation which we should all accept.

    My best regards to all, Loic

  3. I am not an expert at all of Digital Processing and PS usage(though I will try based on above useful advices). In order to achieve some quick wins using some filters, which types of filters would you say are more than nice to have in my case, and mostly for the purpose of landscape photography ? What do you think about the utility and usage of a 25A Red filter ? Thanks alot for your help...
  4. Hi Walter. My second suggestion : solved, as it was already a functionality of PN ;-). My first suggestion : it was a real and true candid one, with no bad intention, exempt from any evil/abuse thoughts; apparently because of your experience and your longer time as PN member, you have been giving a much deaper thought than I had before my candid suggestion... Actually, thinking again about, it I am 200% with you on both points (sorry for your three cents..). Regarding the final conclusion about my suggestions being curious or inappropriate, I don't see your point, but never mind, I am not too interested in trying to understand ! Though I don't have to justify myself about my rating, what you see are the stats of my rating since I started to do so in June 2007, but I have been through a slow learning curve to understand the webstite, understand the rating system, reading forums, viewing many photos, posting myself some photos for critique, and if you would have a breakdown of my stats say the first 3 months and the last 6 months, you would probably see a much different pattern. Thank you anyway for the time you spent providing a good insight and thoughts.
  5. Hi Lex, many thanks for clarifying a few things I was not aware of, especially using the anonymous ratings queue for only one week. That surely explain as one week posting does not reflect the admirable work posted by some PN members. I also understand your view on 1, 2 and 3 points (that's your view tough please accept some poeple may have different approach - I am myself trying to use BOTH anonymous ratings queue, AND comment/rating photos that are already at the top as IMHO there is no harm re-inforcing the message). I also agree to a certain extent only, with fact that is no evidence of a direct correlation between the ability to do something and the ability to evaluate something. Best regards, Loic [PS : by the way, you jump a bit easily on hasty conclusions when saying I want you to critique my photos; this is a discussion forum, and my only intention was precisely to discuss and exchange/express some different opinions, and have proper debate, otherwise if only nodding to intial statement, "all I would be offering is redundant affirmation", and this would be a monologue, not a forum]
  6. Many thanks for your answer Lex. No intention to be "a bit sly". I truly value your input and contribution on PN, especially the one in discussion forum (call it "precious" or whatever other adjectives - sorry about my poor english). However, on the photo critque/rating contribution, I have slightly different perception. I am a bit surprised that after 2 years of membership, and nearly 1000 rated photos, you only "manage" to find 9 photos that deserve > 6 rating. Don't misunderstand me, I respect the way it is (and it's not my business anyway), that's all the point of subjectivity, and problem of scale perception. I think we have maybe two different conceptions on the rating and commenting : I am personally learning everyday from other members with BOTH their comments/ratings AND their own photos. In other words, though I appreciate any ratings and comments from any/all members, I always compare and balance ratings (when not anonymous) and comments from a member, with his own photo portfolio. Please admit that a rating or comment will not have the same impact if coming from someone who has an under average or average portfolio, or if coming from someone who delivers above average and is recognised within PN community thanks to his work. Only one way rating/commenting does not work for me to improve my photos (hands on examples and real photo do, not only litterature). Best regards, Loic
  7. Hi Lex, I am very impressed by you contributions to PN. A real hero. Many thanks for all your advices on such forums, they are so precious. Same for your critiques in Critique Photo request. On the paper, all what you explains makes sense. But when I do read that you did rate 450 photos in one day, with average ratings of 3.94 for originality and 3.75 for aesthetics, I wonder if you were simply unlucky on the day you did that, or if this is the true reflection of what's posted on PN. Anyway, my point was to say, that on top of all the litterature you post on PN, it would be nice if you illustrate it by posting some of your photos yourself? I trust that with your 3-4 rating average, you can show to poeple you have rated that way, what real 5-6 or even 7 photos ratings are. Thanks in advance. Loic.
  8. I have two suggestions to make regarding Rate Anonymously functionality. Sorry

    if this has already been suggested in the past, and I am not sure if the

    request is reasonable from a technical and programmers' side... but I think

    this would be a great improvement for PN, and to remediate the lastly noted

    trend of lack of average numbers of rating per photo and revitalise PN a bit....

    FIRST : Rate Anonymously seems to follow a chronological and most recent

    critique request logic. This is one approach. But due to relatively massive

    number of critique requests, i.e ~ 7000 a week so ~ 40 per hour, it means that

    even if you connect daily, and rate 50/100 photos which is already alot, you

    only got the opportunity to rate anonymously the photos which have been posted

    in the last 2 hours, but nor all the other ones. Do you know if there would be

    a technical option to rate anonymously at any time during the lifecycle of a

    photo. Example, I find a photo for the first time, which has been posted one

    week, one month or one year ago, and I am given the 2 options to rate

    anonymously or not.

    SECOND : I think it would be SO NICE to have the option to select one (or even

    better multiple selections) categorie(s) on which to do anonymous rating. We

    all have or indivudal preference, and that what makes the categorization

    great. But in the above exampe of 40 photos per hours, if you have mostly

    interest for example for Architecture, Landscape, Travel, Street, you will have

    to spend your time rating (or skipping) photos of other categories you are not

    a huge fan of photo, so for example cats, dogs, flowers and nudes.

    Best regards, Loic
