I expose rushing water at 1/8 second to avoid the glassy look and
capture the feeling of the motion of the water. What speeds do you
use? Comments on exposing waterfalls greatly appreciated

I was at the Great Falls park in Maryland around sunset and caught
the Tavern in late afternoon light. Comments please.

I was at Great Falls (in Potomac, Md.) this weekend, and the water
was as low as I can remember it. The waterline provides an
interesting outline of the contours of the rocks. Comments
appreciated.

I was shopping with my daughter in a mask shop in Burano, Italy,
when I saw the owner's dog watching us from under the mask display.
Comments please.

I was photographing Memorial Bridge in Washington, DC at sunrise when
I saw these three ducks swimming into the sunlight under the bridge.
There are several other photos from that session posted on my site.
Comments will be appreciated.

This was taken on a warm winter afternoon outside the Great Falls
tavern on the C&O Canal.

This photo was taken on a warm winter morning in DC when fog obscured
the Virginia side of the Potomac River. Photoshop was used to
correct apparent convergence of the tree tops, and for general image
cleanup. Critiques welcome.

Everyone expected a dull autumn around Washington, DC this year; I
was surprised to find such beautiful colors the one day I was able to
get to the C&O Canal at the Widewater area, just downstream from
Great Falls. Please let me have your comments.

I found this setting while walking around Annapolis with my daughter
on a photo expedition. The photo was taken with a digital camera and
cleaned up in Photoshop. However, the only digital alteration was
the removal of a small piece of another chair from the right side of
the image. Comments greatly appreciated.

While watching the San Francisco Grand Prix bicycle race last year, I
found this display of bicycle jerseys for sale. I loved the colors.
Comments appreciated.

Jake: What a stunning photo! The only drawback for me was the large dark area in the upper right. It makes the photo unbalanced. I wonder if it is possible to produce an image with a little more definition there. Or have you tried a vertical crop focusing on the left side, where all the interesting parts of the image are?

This photo was taken early one morning in January on the Mall in
Washington, D.C. It was lightly edited in Photoshop Elements. Any
comments would be appreciated. There is a horizontal crop of this
image on my gallery page. I'd be interested to know which one you
think works better.

I like the exposure and composition; the combination of foreground and background works well too. I think that the photo would be considerably improved by rotating it a degree or two to the left to make the horizon level.

I was fortunate to be driving to work just as the sun was rising over
the Potomac. (Also fortunate to have my camera bag in the back of my
car.} There were lots of rowers on the Potomac that morning; I only
had to wait a few minutes for one to come in view. The photo is
unmanipulated except for the removal of some automobiles that were
faintly visible through the fog in the background.

These are some of the Elm trees on the National Mall in last week's
snow storm. I'd prefer to shoot this in B&W, but even though this is
in color, I think that it has a monochrome feel about it. Comments
appreciated!

This is a man-made dam that is part of the old fish passageway around
Great Falls. In the print, the waterfall is not as washed out.
Still, comments would be appreciated.

These canoes at Fletcher's boat house on the Potomac kind of remind
me of fish lined up in a market. I have another view of some other
canoes at Fletcher's on my page. Comments welcome.

I don't understand the low ratings that others have given this photo; I like the contrast of the pretty girl and the graffitti. My only comment is that tighter cropping, particularly from the top, might make it a more effective image.

Jeremy: Thank you for your comments. This is one of my favorite images. I am an amature, and I only sell a few photos even in a good year. However, over the last few years, I've sold more of this image than all of my others combined.
I can't take a lot of credit for the tone. The actual image is straight up black and white; I have printed it several times, and my preference is Kodak Polymax II with a strong selenium toner to give it a slightly purple tone. The tone in this image is an accident, and it came when I made a slide of the photo and had the slide scanned. I think that the color is closest to what I would have achieved by printing the image on Ilford paper.

I have taken a series of photos of this tree (another is on my page)
over the years. I like the flow of the branches. Unfortunately,
the tree was damaged in a recent ice storm, so there won't be any
more. Comments welcome

Outstanding photo; great sense of depth. I like the way the foreground draws you into the photo. I also agree with the comments about the waves, I would have burned them a little to balance the photo.
You have a good eye for this B&W landscape. However, if you are going to take a lot of photos like this, you may want to consider a medium format camera and fine grain B&W film. The difference does not show up on the web, but would certainly be worth it when the image is printed.

This photo was taken on Devil's Knob Mountain in Wintergreen, Va.
It's my favorite winter landscape. Comments appreciated.

This was taken following an ice storm in the Blue Ridge mountains.
Sadly, an even stronger ice storm two weeks later took this tree
down. Comments welcome (except for the fact that it's not as good as
Ansel's "Oak Tree, Snowstorm"; I already know that).

I have been experimenting with a new digital camera; comments welcome!
