How well do Sigma's work? I've read all sorts of varying thoughts on their equipment. Some say they are great, others say the build quality could be improved. Is this something to worry about or is it a find out for yourself type deal?

I have recently entered the DSLR photography realm and am looking for ideas on

where to go with it. I have had a lot of success taking pictures with a Nikon

D40, using both the kit 18-55 lens and a 55-200 zoom.

 

I am trying to find out what the best external flash and possibly other lens

combinations I could use. While I am an amateur still, I would like to look

towards taking some professional quality shots. I like taking pictures of

wildlife, so am looking for suggestions on telephoto lenses, as well as lenses

that will work for sports shots (i.e. High School Football, Baseball,

Basketball, etc.).

 

I've looked at some lenses and know that I cannot afford them, yet. However,

it looks like there are some 3rd party ones that will work. I have even seen a

few of those brands mentioned here on photo.net. My main question is, what is

a good 3rd party brand to use? On top of that, what lenses do they have that

will work with the D40, and possibly other Nikon cameras, should I choose to

upgrade in a couple of years?
