  1. Beautiful shot---but the red-eye on her left eye has turned to the same shade of grey as the rest of her eye, making it look like she has no pupil in that eye. Could probably be photoshopped in without a problem. Great contrast otherwise.
  2. I like the lighting a lot, but the depth of field is startling. Her shoulders are SO out of focus compared with her face that it almost looks Photoshopped. You might try closing down the lens about 1 stop or so, and focus directly on the eyes, as you have done.

    Dune Sunset

Beautiful! I am amazed at the subtlety of the colors, I rarely get such performance from Elite Chrome. I would have guessed it was Provia.
  3. This must be a landing, since the runway is in front.

Just kidding---a very nice photo and well-list. I would crop it down just a little more to remove the bird on the far right, but maintain the airborne one in the center. Also, it looks like this was JPGed a little too hard, I see jagged edges.

I really like the muted teal green-gray colors, though. I think you captured a great shot.

  4. Particularly at noontime at high altitude, skylight is much bluer than "normal". It can reflect off the haze to give faraway objects a much bluer tint than those up close. I think that's what you are seeing here.

This is a fantastic shot. Please tell me you used a tripod, otherwise I will have to get another home mortgage to afford a Hasselblad.

  5. There is definitely a cyan component---if the negative doesn't look like this, it could be an artifact of scanning. If the neg looks just like this it could be an artifact of altitude, of course, or time of day, or film, or...

Here is a version with a simple color correction, just used the automated tool in Paint Shop Pro.

BTW, I really like the cropping, and I don't know why because I think I should want to see more of the scene. I think it's because the birds are so sharp and so tightly framed, my eye is drawn directly to them. Excellent work.

  6. Very nice color balance! I am amazed you got this without a polarizer---not much detail in the trees far away, but lots in the barn and in the snow shadows. I like the simplicity of the composition, too. Not a footprint anywhere.

I forget sometimes how blue the sky looks from the mountains, thanks for reminding me.

  7. The symmetry is great, and I rather like the lighting.

I think the wide-angle distortion is a little too obvious (look at the difference between the first and last buildings with reference to vertical). You might have better results using a normal lens from farther away, if possible.

    Keep up the good work!

You got the light balance just perfect---I would have bracketed to the limits of my camera and probably missed it! Was this a double-exposure?

Bummer about that street light on the upper left, if that's what it is---looks too low to be the sun.

Excellent work, it looks like you captured the foam just right. Love the lighting.

PS I live in Fort Bragg, those are my neighbors!

PPS Did this require any sharpening?

Very seldom does underexposure work for me, but in this case I think you captured the moment really, really well. I am guessing that you did not use any colored filters, which helps tremendously. I wouldn't change the cropping or the exposure at all.

    Olympus Mons, Mars

I would love to comment, but... considering that spacecraft orbiting mars generally get photos of equal or lesser quality, can you explain how you might have gotten a photo like this from a state park? Must be some telescope!

I do like the moons on the bottom left, though I must confess that I doubt this is real as it doesn't quite look like Olympus Mons. The color is right on, at least according to my obviously-not-so-manly telescope. Then again, I can't make out details like this---it looks more like an orange ball to me.

  8. The dot almost looks like flare, but if you have seen similar artifacts then it is most likely a lab error. A shame, this is a fantastic picture otherwise---I suggest you clean it up digitally and then have a new neg made, and tell us which lab so we can avoid them!
  9. This has the potential to be a really lovely picture. The subject matter is really nice, and I think the cropping is spot on, but the color is far too yellow and the overall tone is too dark for a sunset---I find sunsets to be more luminous. Keep up the excellent work!
  10. I should have been more clear in my explanation---this really is the "Pilot's View", since I was the pilot, and the view is from the left front seat. That "wing" is actually the top of the instrument panel and the cowling (a cover over the engine compartment). Had I used faster film you would see a propeller partially obscuring the view. Maybe it would make more sense then?

My wife also thinks the blurry instrument panel is distracting; I am quite attached to it. Without it, this is just another postcard of the bridge, of which there are zillions. This is indeed a snapshot, but perhaps one that only the pilot of a small plane can appreciate---limited audience.

Thanks very much for the comments! My new/old camera should arrive tomorrow, so perhaps my subject matter can improve!
