1.
I want to thank all those that responded to my question, but at this point I feel like just a messenger. My friend and neighbor two doors away called this morning and announced all was well with his images. It seems according to what I gather from his description the file names were in duplicate. He went to the end of the file listing on the memory card and started opening files as opposed to starting at the beginning. He said the file names were in duplicate, all images are present when opening them from the end rather than the beginning.
I am still scratching my head on this but have no doubt what neighbor says is working, next time I am at his house I will ask to look at his camera settings.

 2.
My neighbor and myself both have Nikon D90's, he just returned from a trip to Montana and found he was unable to transfer his images from his SD cards to a Mac laptop. I offered to try with my PC, my PC recognizes the files but rejects the JEPG image saying something is missing and is incompatible. We tried using the cord Nikon provides for transfer from camera to computer using Nikon View. We tried Nikon transfer as well, nothing. We can view the photos in his camera on the rear screen.
I also tried Photo Shop 5 and Corel, neither one will open the images on the SD cards.
Anyone have any suggestions???
Thank you,
3.
Thank you Chas,
I just heard from them, the offer is vague. They want to use 3, of the four they liked best. And are offering 250.00. I am assuming that's their offer for all three, but it does not say. If that's the case its a no go on my part.
No one will be in their office until Monday.

Thanks for your reply,
4.
Today I presented 68 night photos of nifty stuff to the city tourism bureau, all taken within the city, all after dark, none showing a McD sign. These are places that tourists rarely find or see especially at night. The girl I presented these to was a knowledgeable person and showed high interest, she requested I send her four images for consideration.
I am completely out of touch here price wise, the last time I did this was 1992. I received 350 dollars for use of one image for the printing of 2500 brochures containing my photo on the cover, it was an insurance company.
Now I discover Tourist Bureaus do not buy photos, the advertizing company they use does (maybe) buy the ones the bureau is interested in. But my being out of touch all these years I need help with pricing.
I have looked at the archives here but I find little that fits this. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you ,
5.
Well yes to Matt's response I am using Nikon's. And I fully understand and appreciate DB Coopers explanation. But What is confusing me was a 300mm lens used on a DX format camera will be equal to 450 mm as opposed to using the same lens on an FX camera providing only a magnification factor of 300 mm. So say the advertisements?
You gotta admit it gets confusing

 6.
There must be some formula to convert the equal size seen by the sensor between DX and FX, I can not note an exact match saying 300mm FX = 450mm DX. then looking at some macro lens some list 60mm + 93mm and I noted where 85mm = 105mm. Now is there some formula to figure this out, I hardly think different manufacturers of the same focal length lens would offer a different size image on the sensor

Thanks

 7.
We seem to have newer and more letters on the lens, some of these I recognize, others remain a mystery. Things like AF, ED and VR I can identify with but now my being in the market for a new lens, I find new and strange ID letters on some lenses. RE: G ED, Di LL, Di LD and others.
It there some place that lists what these codes mean?

Thanks

 8.
Thanks for the input here guys, I have some good news and some not so good. I downloaded the free trial from Recovery Plus Photo Recovery and it seemed to work as they say it will, as I can see the images as they are recovered. So I went ahead and filled out the order form with my CC #, this is supposed to get me an unlock code.
Well nothing, zip, nada. So I have emailed their support, I will keep y'all posted. In the meantime I will give the freebie a shot as mentioned by Mark in his post from yesterday.

 9.
James, thank you for your reply. However your answers brings up another question in my mind.
Having begun my photography back in 1950 I can say one thing, I never lost a negative. Now with that said I have files of type written marine survey reports and reports for insurance claims stored on plain old el cheapo Office Depot RW CD's, each CD's containing perhaps 40 - 60 individual reports. All of which are marked with a Sharpie, and most likely the early ones with just a plain old marker, as I don't recall special markers from Sharpie for CD's way back then.
These first photo CD's were burned when I began using them back in 2000, I used an external HP CD reader/writer, I have checked a few of the 24 such CD's that contain photos of which most of them are full, and I found none of the disks that I randomly checked have lost any files.
Another thought, the present day (Office Depot) CD's may have a poor quality as compared to those of earlier years.
My point is, none of these old files are corrupt and the oldest is now 10 years old and they surely were not treated as you suggest. The only difference is after they were full they were stored away and haven't been touched until today.
I am open for suggestions, ideas and what ever information anyone may be willing to share.
BTW, Taiyo Yuden disks and Archival Gold pens are on order.

 10.
The causeway is six miles from the launch pad +/-, years ago I was on the causeway with a Canon AE1 and a 200 mm lens, I was happy to say all my shots were all of correct exposure and focus, but the shuttle its self was very small in the 35 mm frame, but the smoke was very prevalent.

I was told if you write to your congressman you might have a better chance of getting a pass for the causeway.

 11.
I have done extensive expert witness work regarding marine insurance claims, all photos of the damage are presented in a detailed type written report. They are then saved to a write only CD, often the owner is unhappy with the insurance companies decision and the case winds up in court.
Then I as the marine surveyor end up as an expert witness be it for the insured or the insurance company. The CD is taken to court accompanied by an affidavit stating that the photographs have not been altered.
Judges in the beginning of digital photography were sometimes skeptical, but that has changed over the years and usually without further question the photographs are accepted as evidence.

 12.
I have searched this subject and found only 4 year old responses. I also am a victim of the ghost that steals images from CD's. Having discussed this issue with my computer wizard he allowed how I should use the recording program to exit or remove the CD from the drive, not to push the open button on the drive.
Having that in mind I was confident my problems were over, however that did not seem to make any difference. Files were still lost, as a matter of fact the entire disk trashed.
Having read some of the old responses to this problem regarding the expense of recovery my question is; What is causing this?
I know someone will ask, I am using the software from roxio, it does not seem to matter who's brand of CD I use the problems are still there.
I am now busy saving all images to an external hard drive, and finding more corrupt images along the way. Some of these CD's have not been touched in a year or more. They live in a climate controlled room, in individual hard plastic boxes like the used to come in. (I think they were called jewel boxes)

Thanks, any suggestions are welcome

 13.
Never having been one for vague abbreviations much less the extreme use of acronyms I find myself somewhat confused. Having to deal with a print on demand publisher, the girl told me their acceptable photo size was 300, I questioned that and asked, do you mean 300, 000? No 300 will be fiine, so I then asked, do you mean 300K, the reply was , no just 300.
Somewhat confused I said thank you and hung up.
I am noticing other places just using 300 as a size, am I so far behind here or have we gotten so lazy we can't call it what it is. Or is there actually a 300ppi suitable for the printing 9 X 6 photographs in a photo book.
It would seem to me that any photo printed at that resolution would be very poor.
Please help me better understand this terminology.

Thanks

 14.
I read the archives and find a lot on this but I am not finding answers to my specific questions there. So here goes, many here say the lenses from old film cameras to new DSLR cameras are compatible, the local sort of dim dim guy at the camera store said the older lenses would work fine.
Fine to me means all of the features will work, after having the D 90 for a month now I tried my old 70 - 300 mm sigma on the D 90, the result was not as good as expected. Here is what it seems to do; all settings work properly in P for program, changing to A, and setting the aperture ring nothing works Fee shows up in the window. Next S, shutter, this seems to work.
So I tried my 100mm close focus el cheapo lens, it works the same as the Sigma. Am I missing something here or was there something different with the old 8008? I notice 4 gold contact pins then a space and then one gold contact pin on all of my old lenses. The D 90 has 8 contacts, no spaces.
So as it stands if I want to use either of these two lenses, I must use program and hope for Santa to place some new glass under the tree.
Thanks guys for your help

 15.
Well guys I am looking at this thread because I have had bad luck in saving photo files with Roxio. I have had a few corrupt files along the way, but worst of all I have just lost my second completely full CD.
I see others here are using Roxio as I have now for about 6 years, suddenly it said there was a problem reading a file and did I want to correct that. Well guys I made a poor choice, I said yes and in doing so it dumped the complete disk.
My internal hard drive will not hold much more so tomorrow I go in search of an external hard drive, I will never save another photo on CD for myself.
Pardon me if I seem a little pissed..........I am. In 60 years I never lost a negative, never.

 16.
After reading many of these posts I want to inject this, I have been doing a series of night shots here in Fort Lauderdale and surrounding areas off and on for two years, I have accumulated somewhere near 150 images. Some of bridges, including under one bridge, churches, waterfront businesses, etc.
After the encounter with the Deputy Sheriff which I mentioned here earlier I felt I was good to go in the railroad station. I set up and waited for the scheduled south bound, it was just after sun down Just about the time the train was due I was approached by a deputy dog (this is what we locally call armed security guards)
What are you doing? I am waiting for the train. No pictures in the station he said. Oh how come? He then said no pictures in the train stations, air port or the port. Well I said I have a pass for the port. You do? yes I do, so I showed it to him and he said I have to go fill out my report, you be gone when I come back, Thank you I said.
After two years and only two encounters I feel lucky.
