I store my equipment in stackable plastic boxes. kind you'd use for kids toys.. i keep little blue boxes of silica gel which can be placed in microwave to remove moisture and change the colour from pink back to blue

Since when is Nikon American..
Cheapest is not always best. Hope You didn't get stung as some others have. It's good that you are checking before you buy.

Stagger giving him the 1.4, say for christmas. I guarantee he'll appreciate it more after using the kit lens for few months. Usually people who buy a couple of lenses tend to just focus (excuse the pun)on one of them and not really get the benefit of the other lens.
If only there were more brothers like you in the world. There would be a lot of even happier photographers..HA hA.

You can get these pop up shades that have buttons which coincide with the menu buttons at the rear of the camera.. not all pop up shades/hoods have these..they are simple to install. you remove the eyepiece and the plastic lcd screen protector and the pop up shade fits perfectly..

Should have changed to Euro..

No offence but is the purpose of a critique not to let others decide whether they think the pictures are good or not not you.

Firstly i'd ask 1, Was it cheaper than a shop bought item? 2, is there anything wrong with the camera? if the answers are 1,yes and 2,no. then normally i'd say buying a perfectly good camera off the net and saving some money in the process then you've got a bargain and can use that hard earned cash for some decent glass..
however if the advertisement clearly stated
"the camera came straight out of an unopened box with factory sealing and thus had never been used before". Do you think that maybe the person meant that when they first received the camera it was delivered to them in an unopened box and subsequently unused.. just a thought..
If it was supposed to be a sealed box then i would not be happy with an opened box.I'd insist on a refund. Especially for such an item as the D200..
I have taken some chances buying from companies in different countries , there is a great deal of trust given to the seller and you must rely on accurate feedback of previous customers. I think you should tell the seller you will be leaving such feedback. there is nothing like the fear of bad publicity to spur them into action, it may also help to prevent this happening to the next person.
Regards, Vincent

Am looking for your recommendation as to the best book for a newcomer to
photography from basics through to more advanced techniques. Have a nikon D80.

Consider 50mm f/1.4 can take pictures in really low light as such a fast lens. Situations which look relatively dark to your eyes will look bright.. eliminating the need for using flash.

Was about to post a question on the forum to see if there was something wrng with my lens hood.I didn't realise the lens hood hb-32 was supposed to snap in place to secure it to my 18-200mm lens, until i had the misfortune of the hood falling off a couple of times.
After searching for similar threads on the forum discovered this solution by Leonard Evans .. thanks worked a treat . just have to line up the dots until it clicks in place.
Can now take photos in peace without the worry of losing the lens hood over a wall or into a pond, (as happened before).

Brett I have two cards with great capacity on them,I mostly take large fine jpegs.
They are a 2gb Transcend 150x sd card which came with the camera and one i bought on ebay,I decided to go with the same make but a higher capacity 8 gb transcend sdhc..
Currently there are 422 photos on the 2gb card(all of which have been backed up) and the camera indicates there is room for 70 more Large Fine Jpegs. People will discourage you i'm sure from getting the 8gb version. (something to do with a basket and eggs). But i like the idea of not having to delete photos as i go to make room for more shots as you are relying on the relatively small (in comparison to a pc) lcd screen to see which photos you don't like.
remember if at any time you decide to to take Raw + Fine Jpeg at some time the capacity will reduce further.<div></div>

Congrats on becoming a Dad Will,
I just recently purchased a 50mm f/1.4 for my d80.It's a great lens, very fast, amazing how photos taken in a dullroom appear to be well lit. I assure you that the last thing you'll be thinking of when capturing pictures of your daughter is the price you paid for the lens. I intend capturing 1000's of photos of my son, build quality is reportedly better than the 50mm f/1.8. assuming of course that you were considering these two..

is the display completely blank. ie no text or icons.?
more details please. what model of canon digital camera?
could be lcd problem, power problem i.e battery. sometimes screen looks black when photos are completely underexposed.
make sure you charge up the battery or replace batteries if possible. did you take the lens cap off and take photo in auto mode.
consider looking at the fault finding section of your user manual. best of luck. look forward to hearing how you got on. sorry if i stated the obvious..
What zoom lens for low light conditions at weddings?
