  1. A few years ago I was crossing a river in heavy rain with my 350 and kit lens around my neck and slipped on a wet rock- it was entirely submerged but after a day of drying it worked fine- optically as well as electronically. I think you may not have too much to worry about as long as you dry it out fully. Have patience!<BR><BR>

On another note- when I bought my 17-55 2.8 used it was full of dust- all you have to do to clean the front element is prise the little plastic ring away from the front (the one that is printed with the lens name) it's only stuck down with double sided sticky tape, and undo the three screws then you can slide the front element out. It's massive! I had no need to go any deeper as all of the dust was in the front 'chamber'. Just make sure that you put the element back in in the exact rotation as it was otherwise you may get front/back focus issues. You can see where the screws line up with the holes on the element as they are marked from where they were tight before.<BR>

Best of luck and please let us all know how you get on.<BR>

  2. Hi Guys

    Thanks for your answers

The setup I intend to use is outlined in my last post (linked)

basically I have been advised by a very good friend of mine to run the OS etc on RAID0 (2 x 250gb) I will backup everything regularly to DVD + external 500gb drive.

I'm wondering if there is any need/ benefit in getting, say, another 100gb drive or something to use solely as a scratch for CS3..

    Hmm. Any advice is great.

    Cheers

  3. Hmm. Thanks for the responses so far, I'm sure there's more to come, it's all useful.

I'm not to sure about 64 bit as the lack of the unknown scares me a little- drivers seem to be the main problem on there or lack of, obviously.

All I intened to use device wise on the new box is pantone huey pro calibrator, canon software (40D/20D) adobe suite (bridge/CS3, maybe lightroom but thats a different discussion) External usb drive, microsoft activesync for my windows mobile device, media sync with my 60gb creative zen vision m. This is all fairly new stuff so I guess it'd be ok?

Also, when looking at 3.5" bay card readers online none seem to be compatible with vista. They run on usb straight from the motherboard so is it safe to assume it's just an omission from the listing?

    Cheers

  4. Hi everyone

I'm finally building my new pc, mainly intended for use as a photoshop machine

but I will also be using the usual office 07/ outlook/ media player/ web etc.

I'm going to be running Vista Ultimate SP1 with one 19" monitor and one 22".

    My ideas are-

    Motherboard- Asus M3N78-EMH HDMI, GeForce 8200, S AM2+, PCI-E 2.0 (x16),

DDR2 1066MHz, SATA II, SATA RAID, uATX

CPU- AMD Phenomル X3 8650, Toliman Core, Socket AM2+, 2.3GHz, HT

    3600MHz, 3.5MB Total Cache, Retail

PSU- 500w Seasonic S12II-500 PSU, 12Cm fan, active PFC RoHS +80%

    Graphics- 512MB EVGA 9600GT, KO, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), Mem 1900 MHz, GDDR3,

    GPU 700 MHz, Stream 64, 2x DL DVI-I

    HDD- 250 GB Maxtor STM3250310AS DiamondMax 21, SATA 300, 7200 rpm,

    8MB Cache, 11 ms (2 x disks on RAID 0 configuration)

    RAM- 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX DDR2 PC2-8500 (1066), 240 Pin, Non-ECC

    Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-15, EPP, DHX

What do you guys and girls think? I want the best performance for about ᆪ450/

    ᆪ500 spend.

Do you think that I'll need a scratch disc for CS3 with this and that it'll be

beneficial to me? If so, any recommendations?

    Any other suggestions?

It's been a long time since I last played with the vital organs of a PC so want to

    make the right purchases...

    Cheers in advance, Jim

  5. Aha. thanks everyone. I hope it is a genuine copy otherwise I'll most likely have some hassle getting my money back. Paypal is good for this sort of thing though.. (says confidently)

    Here's the link. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250251367160

I reckon that I got a good deal not because it was pirate, just got lucky as it was an auction, not fixed price. Perhaps others were worried whether it was pirate or not so didn't bid... If it is genuine then I got a real steal!

Thanks for all of your advice.

  6. Hi everybody

I need your help. I'm new to this forum but you'll often find me on Canon EOS.

I'm in the market for a new pc and have just bought a copy of CS3 from eBay.

Got it out of the (sealed) box and am not too sure of it's genuinity, as the actual

    software disc is softly scratched?

Should there be some sort of hologram on the discs or not, as there isn't on mine.

It also came with a video workshop disc, of which I cannot find any mention of on

    the adobe site.

The box and manuals look very genuine though so I'm a bit stuck, as I'm just not

    sure.

Obviously I don't want to use pirated software but I just don't know whether this is

    actually genuine or not.

I'm looking for an image of the actual disc print, as I cannot find one on google

    images to compare mine with...

    Hmm.

    Thanks in advance.

  7. Hi Tommy

You can use another 580EX if you like as the master in replacement of the STE2. You can also disable the master from firing the flash, for use solely as a transmitter.

I recognise the limitations of IR transmission but everyone should take a look here, these are soon to be released in the UK www.radiopopper.com

    Best invention ever.

  8. I hacked my TC 80N3 in this way so that I could use it with my old 350D (Xt), using this method http://www.camerahacker.com/Canon_Accessory/N3_E3_Convert.php

I will upload a photo of my connectors too.

Now I have E3 connectors and N3 for both bodies.

On the left is one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-5-2-5mm-to-3-5mm-headphone-adapter-fits-3-5-mm-jack_W0QQitemZ130208948264QQihZ003QQcategoryZ112529QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

In the middle is my custom lead (N3 that was spare from cutting the cable on one end and 3.5mm male stereo jack on the other)

On the right is the remote unit itelf with 3.5mm stereo female socket for the two adapters. With this setup I have built a bridge 10m extension lead with the appropriate 3.5mm stereo connectors on each end.

If you wish to use your N3 remote on a body, you will either need to get hold of an N3 plug (quite difficult!), or wire up an E3 to use on a body in the Xt/Xti/Xsi range. This will do the trick http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-5-2-5mm-to-3-5mm-headphone-adapter-fits-3-5-mm-jack_W0QQitemZ130208948264QQihZ003QQcategoryZ112529QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

    Hope that this helps.

  9. I was playing with mine and had the same problem, I thought it was broken because I couldn't find anywhere in the manual that helped, I thought 6 frames cannot be right. Fixed it though. Cannot remember how I realised about the high ISO but I did and it fixed it.
  10. Interesting question- I pondered this a while back with my 40D and star trails, but then remembered that obviously the image sensor is 'exposing' therefore it is drawing power, plus the camera's electronics will be fired up as long as the camera is on. How much power this all uses I'm afraid I couldn't tell you. I'd get some cheap batteries from eBay, as many as you can. Then shoot to your hearts content.
  11. I'm going to pick this one. "Also, would the 50mm f/1.8 and the 50mm f/1.4 lens have the min. focal distance?"<BR><BR>

I assume you mean the same minimum focus distance. If so, have a look at this

    <a href=http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/EF_Lenses/Fixed_Focal_Length/index.asp#</a>link</a>

the 50 1.8 has a close focus distance of 0.45m and the 85 1.8 has one of 0.85m. But you have to take into account the field of view and perspective so in this case for portrait use I'd say the 85mm wins. To put it into perspective the telephoto that you have has a closest focus of 1.5metres.

  12. Advertising is definitely the way. We need to keep in mind all the time that business is not only the obvious tasks of photography, but accounting, budgeting, and advertise advertise advertise. Good that makes me feel better, it's easier than I thought? Not!

Best of luck. Thanks for the comment. Which one was your favourite?
