1.
I am very interested on this one too. I have bought a D40x recently and I want to use it as a street camera. I come from a full manual background (Nikon FM2) and I'd like to get the same feel from this camera (with the digital advantages). I will get a 35mm prime lens for that purpose. After doing some research I decided that the best standard prime lens for me may be a AF-S 35mm f/2D. This is a very convenient lens I will be able to use it in my FM2 too as a wideangle. This wouldn't be the case with a SIGMA 30mm f/1.4D

The drawnback is that the 35mm f/2D won't AF in my D40x. So I plan to install a split prisma focusing system from http://www.katzeyeoptics.com/ to make MF more pleasant. You may be interested to get one of this too if you are planing to use the D40 in MF mode.

  2.
Most of the people that buys a D40/D40x may be new to DSRL cameras but this may not be always the case. Recently a forummate Paul A., that came from a Leica SRL background, was wondering if a D40x may give him decent enought picture quality in a compact package if he used a high end lens. (Check: http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00Kdw3)

So, I guess it may nice a comment about if D40/D40x features may satisfy semi-pro needs if a compact package is what they are looking for. (or may this be M8 territory, ha ha).

I am photo enthusiastic that has only shot with full manual 35mm cameras, first pentax and then a Nikon FM2. Then I decided to move to digital and started to check Nikon DSRL bodys, first time I've holded a D200 I though it was huge, the D80 was big and D40x wasn't quite as big. So, to me, D40x was a more natural step than D80 or D200. I bought a D40x a month and I am very happy with the results. It may be limmited in features but if you come from a full manual SRL I can tell you it has too many!!!

  3.
Hi everyone!

After reading your comments and other topics I've came to the conclutions that, in the case I have any trouble with the camera, the garanty won't cover it. Moreso If the camera was the D40x (the model I've decided to buy). Being a new model it could have some testing problems.

There is a very trustable seller in Spain and the govermemnt forces every technology product to have 2 year warranty.

Thinking in all of this I've decided to buy the camera in my home town and take it to my holiday trip! I couldn't be happier... The price was higher than the one I could get in NY but I feel more confindent with this 2 year warranty.

I want to thank everyone for your replies!

  4.
Hi there!

I am traveling to NY (Manhattan area) in eastern and I am planing to check if

    I can find a good deal on a digital body. I am interested in the D200,

    preferable second hand. Is there any trustable shop in the Manhattan area? If it

    would have second options would be awesome.

Thanks

  5.
It is pretty clear that using D80 with manual lens can be done, but the

    camera won't meter. However I was reading the D80 specs and I found this on the

    last page of this document:

http://nikonimaging.com/global/products/digitalcamera/slr/d80/pdf/D80_16p.pdf

(Check point 3)

----------------------------->

Exposure Metering System:

Three-mode through-the-lens (TTL) exposure metering

1) 3D Color Matrix Metering II (type G and D lenses);

    color matrix metering II (other CPU lenses); metering

    performed by 420-segment RGB sensor

2) Center-weighted: Weight of 75% given to 6, 8, or 10mm dia.

    circle in center of frame

3) Spot: Meters 3.5mm dia. circle (about 2.5% of frame)

    centered on active focus area (on center focus area when

    non-CPU lens is used)

----------------------------->

I may be wrong but I understand that the camera will meter the light at the

    center point of the frame with non-cpu lens just like a film camera with do.

    This can be applied to AIS lenses, isn't it?

I know there is a lot experienced people around here so I may be

    misunderstanding something.

Could you help me to clarify this?
