raw format
in Nikon
As I understand it there is no image quality advantage to raw. Whe you print it, it is handled by the printer at 8 bit. It is useful for its flexablility. you can do more computer manipulations of exposure and colour temp.
I shoot jpg and try to get good exposures. More on the card and esier to store. Some would laugh at this. so be it.

I do not have a d80 yet but you can control the exposure plus or minus so that it gives you what you need. I fiddled with that on my D70 but now I usully accept the camera's slight underexposure to keep the highlights.

You probably have a bent pin in the CF slot. I bent one first week I had the camera. Nikon wanted $500 for repair. I went to a local camera repair shop. Three years ago and I don't think they ever handeled a DSLR. They bent it back. Now I do not remove the CF card.
SD cards do not have this issue.

So far I am able to keep 2 years of shots on a separate hard drive in my computer for quick access. I also burn a cd before formating the card. the cds are stored by date and cataloged on a FileMaker pro data base.
Each year I copy everything onto a hard drive and that goes into my safty deposit box.
So far, so good.
