Thank you Mari and Patsy.  I haven't been on P.net very much of late...and it's good to hear from old friends!

Martin, this old barn was shot in middle Tennessee and is located in some of the most beautiful and fertile farm country in the world.  Glad you like the shot!

"Should have been in the vertical..." ?   Asolutely no offense intended, but I have great difficulty with any critique that speaks of "what should have been".  There are no rules, save the ones we impose on ourselves, or allow others to impose upon us.  Might I like the photograph better if 'in the vertical'?  Maybe, maybe not.  All I can say is that I find no problem with it being 'in the horizontal'.

IMHO...I like the composition the way it is, minus the line to the left.  Some cloning could take care of that problem. The cropped version show is too centered for my taste. I can't imagine cropping even a tiny bit from the top, as someone suggested, and though it could work to crop a bit from the bottom...I don't see that it would be an improvement.  Once again, the line is the only problem from my perspective.

  1. Doug, Somehow I've missed this one over the years. For me...the finest photograph in your portfolio.  This is simply masterful.  I'd be tickled silly if I ever took one picture of this caliber!

    Regards,

    John

  2. Doug, My parents have 8mm film of the restaurant and this very sign from the early '60s when we were on a trip to the Smokies.  Of course, I realize that this particular sign may have replaced the one we actually filmed, but I know it was similar, if not exactly the same. Makes me want to go dig out the home movies!

John, I've barely been on site for several months, but was pleased to find your recent comment today. This series was more of an experiment than a 'plan'...but I was generally pleased with the results.  It reminds me that the magnolias will be blooming soon and I'd like to see if I can do a similar series with even better results.  Thanks for your encouragement.  I'll be visiting your portfolio very soon.

    Regards,

    John

of all the wonderful florals in your portfolio, this is my favorite!  such a nice touch, not framing in the entire purple tulip....    masterful work.

  3. Almost two years, and I'm just finding your comment Larry.  Thank you!  Yes, the shot was taken in the lower foothills of the Smokies, just outside of Sevierville, Tn. I haven't worked on this shot (printed, on canvas or paper) since I posted...but will eventually get around to it.  I appreciate your taking the time to offer your comments!  Regards, John

thanks, Sam.  just finding your comment after over a year.  i understand about the tree on the right.  this was an instance of not having a better vantage point to shoot from.  glad you like it!   JG

one of the most unique photographs i've seen in quite some time.  the atmosphere is mysterious...to say the least.  but while it is a scene of a cemetary, it doesn't come across (to me) as scary or haunting.  the lighting is beyond unusual...and the light at the end of the road plays an important part in making the shot so successful.  everything is perfectly in place.  the large shrub that anchors the photo at bottom right, the row of shrubs that leads us into the heart of the picture...and that wonderful half moon that creates a nice diagonal with the large shrub. i'd love to know the details of how you processed this one!    very well done.
