  1. My main question is whether there is *any* loss from, as a last step,

converting from tiff to jpg for printing.

In his great article, Bob Atkins states, "If you're not sure about

exposure or white balance, or if you want to maintain the maximum

possible allowable post exposure processing, then you'll want to

shoot RAW files, convert to 16-bit TIFF, do all your processing, then

convert to 8-bit files for printing."

I have also read some others that seem to suggest that the loss is

minimal, but I haven't been able to find out if there is a loss at

all? I understand that you lose information if you make changes and

then save to jpg. But, if the final step is saving as a jpg it would

seem that you wouldn't lose any information.

Of course the advantages are large when you upload to online printers.

    Thanks!

    Chris

  2. I recently read the negative things that Bob MacDonald said about

American Frame. This came after I put in a sizable order to them (I

haven't received them yet). I was wondering if other can recommend a

place that will both print and frame digital images. I like American

Frame because they will also store the images.

    Thanks, chris

  3. Hello everyone,

I am looking for a website to see sell my photos. I have no idea

whether there would be any interest in my photos, so I would like to

try a prefab website just in case. I came across customvisuals.net

and was wondering if anyone had experience with them.

If you know of a good one, feel free to let me know.

Also, if you would like to honestly critique my work and tell me to

give it up, feel free to do that as well!! I can take it, so don't

    worry.

    Thanks for your time! chris

  4. Hello everyone,

I recently started shooting in RAW format. I am happy with the added

flexibility, except when I got to convert files to jpegs for the web.

For some reason, they seem to lose a lot of red. I can play around

with the new jpeg and get things pretty close, but this seems like an

unnecessary step. Has anyone else encountered this? And, if so, is

    there a solution?

Examples: In this shot I had to increase the Red Channel from 100 to

150% to get it to look close:

There is much more orange in the tiff and psd files of this one:

    Thanks in advance! Chris

  5. I have a 300mm 4.0 L with the autofocus not working. The focus sensor

still works, meaning that you can manually focus and the computer

tells you when it is in focus, but the motor doesn't work. So, it is

now a manual focus lens. I just received the quote to repair it --

$375! The original estimate was 275. I am wondering if it is worth

    it. I noticed that used 300 L non-IS go for $700-800. I like the

lens, but I would rather have the IS version.

If I could sell it, in its current state, for 325-425, then I

shouldn't get it repaired. If I couldn't get that much for it, then

it makes sense to get it repaired. (I suppose someone might be

willing to pay more than 700-800 for the repaired lens, since it will

have a new motor, but I doubt it will be too much).

So, given this long-winded story, what do you think?

    Thanks, chris

  6. I've had my LowePro Nova 5 for about 4 years. It can't hold enough of

my equipment and I don't like the divider system (it can't hold

lenses vertically as far as I can tell). I need a bag that will

carry all of my equipment (or at least most). I often carry:

    1. body (DSLR)

    2. 300mm 4.0

    3. 70-200 2.8

    4. 17-40

    5. 100 macro

    6. 1.4 extender

    7. 50mm 1.8

    8. Flash

I would like to keep the price tag under $200. Any suggestions? What

about the Domke F2? LowePro AW5? Please help. Chris

  7. I am headed off to Kauai in 5 days (but who is counting). I am trying

to decide what lenses to bring. I don't want to be too weighted down.

    I shoot with a 10d and I have: 50mm, 100 macro, 70-200 2.8 (sigma),

    17-40 4.0L, 300 4.0.

I will probably focus on landscapes while I am there, so I am

wondering how much I will use the 70-200? I figure the 50 and 300 are

    out.

I know this is tough to give advice on, but anything would help.

    thanks!

    Chris

  8. I haven't used this lense in about 10 months. I took it out yesterday

and the autofocus no longer worked (at any f stop). I cleaned the

terminals with an eraser and tried all sorts of things, without luck.

Is this a problem other people have encountered. Can lenses be

    repaired? Thank you. Chris
