Love old lenses at my D300, e.g. 35-70/2.8 D, 100/2.8 E, 50/1.8 E, 55/2.8 and Vivitar 28/2.8 close focus, Kiron 105/2.8. I cant se disadvantages against DX lenses like: 16-85 VR or , 35/1.8 http://joergvetter.oyla.de/cgi-bin/hpm_homepage.cgi

Some test homepages you will find under for different Nikon - and you will see testing is different made.
http://joergvetter.oyla.de/cgi-bin/hpm_homepage.cgi
I recommend: take it and decide first: how if the feeling, handling for you :lens + camera? How is AF speed - different distances fast change ... ? How is the image quality: take a base lens with similar focal length, make shots with the base lens and the candidate: open and closed & nearest focal length and infinity! Take a shot against a bright light to see ghost and flare! By the way the 50/1.8 AIS E is the base lens for me in the focal length of about 35 ... 80.
However, the image quality stands not in front of the camera - its the creativityof the photograph.

35/1.8 is sharp. Use it when I need a small and fast lens: but high chromatic aberration on this lens and distortion too. http://joergvetter.oyla.de/cgi-bin/hpm_homepage.cgi BR Joerg

Dont laugh. Use often the 18-55 VR: if I am looking for a small equipment. The optical quality is the same or better than of the 18-200. Try it! http://joergvetter.oyla.de/cgi-bin/hpm_homepage.cgi BR JV

Yes its a confusing effect: However the newest 35/1.8 DX shows much larger CAs ! http://joergvetter.oyla.de/cgi-bin/hpm_homepage.cgi BR JV

My sharpest lens: Nikon D300 is Nikkor AIS 55/2.8 http://joergvetter.oyla.de/cgi-bin/hpm_homepage.cgi

Great result for the small oldy: Sigma 24-50 UC against the Nikon 18-55 VR. Weak length is the short end, but the 35 mm and 50mm are realy great for that lens, see: http://joergvetter.oyla.de/cgi-bin/hpm_homepage.cgi

Ok, If I have time I will prepare a short comparision with the 18-55 VR -only 260 g, but it has only a plastic bajonet! MF is also difficult to handle.
-
Jonathan, 360 g only, length 51mm, diameter 69 mm. A shot is shown in the folder: Kleinstes zoom- smallest zoom http://joergvetter.oyla.de/cgi-bin/hpm_homepage.cgi also a link, the only one which I found.

Dear all, just a hobby: permanently I am looking for lenses: optical performance/(size*weight) is maximized for
my D300. Now I found the Sigma 24-50 UC. Not a fast lens, but wondering how good the resolution is. I made a test
against newest Nikkor 16-85 VR at 5.6. See http://joergvetter.oyla.de/cgi-bin/hpm_homepage.cgi . Ghost/flare
resistance seems to be acceptable (A 5.6). The AF is quite fast. Does anybody has a manual or test reports from
that lens? Any other advice for "minimized" lenses for D300 ? Thanks BR Joerg

Dear all, meanwhile I made a test : Nikon D300. The performance was wonderful for the price. MF works well, OS is OK, optical quality at 50 and 200 is wonderful. COLOR FOTO 10/2009 made a test at Canon EOS 450D.They found a weak point at 100 mm , otherwise they recommend it for digital cameras 79 points from 100, 3.5% over average performance.

Mark , now I made a test a wide spread test at 50 mm/70mm/200 mm with the Sigama 50-200 (Nikon D300): other lenses:
Nikon 16-85 DX, 70-210, 4-5.6 D, 35-70,2.8D. What a wonder the Sigama stands excellent in all cases:
both in the center, the boder CA is low too (not alwayws number one but it works well). I recommend to take it! BR Joerg

Mark, the problem of DSLR is in addition: the lenses show different behaviour at different bodies: D40 ... D300 to D5000 (dont ask me why that is cuasedin the different cases). If we have one test it might be not representative for all bodies, thats why I am asking for practical tests. Of course a lot of experts in the internet ... .

Thanks Richard, I am not sure if the quality control Made in Japan by Sigma is still on a lower level than Nikon Made in China (35/1.8). German test reports show some time best lens Sigma, e.g. 17-70, 2.8-4.5, Foto-Video:
8/2009, better than 17-50 ,2.8 (D90)
Here one user "review" in German with simple samples.

Dear PN friends, does anyone has experience with the Sigma 50-200 HSM OS versus Nikon 55-200 VR ? Or does someone
know a link? My own preleminary test shots with D300 in a photoshop showed a good performance in addition:the MF
handling works better than the Nikon 55-200 VR, it has a metallic bajonet, the lens hood is simple to mount.
Thanks Joerg

Dear all, thanks a lot: two alternatives AI, AIS macro lens or extension tube. I love the pancake 50/1.8 E and will have a look at a close up lense - its so small alltogether, and so easy to handle without a lens change - yes its not the cheapest solution (achromtic) but the smallest size. BR Joerg

Dear all, its a surprising statement for me. I got a series E 50/1.8. The test at D300 in comparision to: Sigma 50/2.8
EX, Nikkor 35-70/2,8 D, Nikkor 18-55 VR, Nikkor 50/1.4 AI showed that the lens is quit good starting with 2. At 5.6
its still in the center and the corners concerning contrast and sharpness better than the others - the Sigma has a
high sharpness also at the corners but a lower contrast, the 35-70/2.8D has a perfect corner sharpness and contrast,
burt the sharpness at the center is not as good as that of the 50/1.8 E. My 50/1.4 AI might have some problems: its
not better than the 50/1.8 at all values - at 1.4 its realy not usable. The 18-55VR is the loser (but a great travel
lens !). The disadvantage is the bad "macro" of teh 50/1.8. Does anyone knows what the best close up lenses are for
that 50/1.8 ? I am lokking now everytime for lenses combining small size with high performance. Any
recommendation is welcome: lower than 50 mm . BR and thanks. Joerg Vetter

Thanks Tze: now we have Nikon 35/2 a compromise, ULTRON 40/2 smallest, Sigma 50/1.4 (large filter 77 mm). Are there some additional candidates ? BR Joerg
-
Thanks Oskar, 28 to 35 mm all are near the "normal". It might be OK to take 28. Looking for a sharp, and if possible also small size ... . The Sigma 35/1.4 is not the best at the corners (see e.g. photozone) and large too. BR Joerg
-
Dear all, thanks for the comments. Does anyone knows the NOKTON 35/1.4 made by Voigtlander/Cosina ? Might be smaller than the 40/2 ? Eventuelly I have to go for Nikon 35/2 AFD. BR Joerg
-
Dear all, I am looking for a standard lens (effective at D300 ca. 55+/-10mm). The quality has to be the same like 35-
70/2.8 D (I use it now). Whats about the Voigtlander Ultron 40 or Nokton 35/1.4 - or is Tokina 35/2.8 macro of
interest - or is the Nikon 35/2 AF the optimal ? Might be also interesting to look for 28 mm and 30 mm . Small size
zooms are also a possibility ? Thanks BR Joerg
-
Thanks all for your informations. Hector I will try to find Calumet.
Walter you might have right that the time is over. Shun thanks, but its unfortunately not possible. BR Joerg

Dear photonet-friends, does anyone knows a shop for second hand lenses in SAN
DIEGO ? Normally all lenses and ... are much cheaper than in Germany. Thanks
for your recommendations. BR Joerg

Great ideas. The question is: what is a streefoto. You show also some OUT:the gallery photo ? However you made great shots. BR Joerg
Fast vs. slow lens?
in Beginner Questions
Posted

The 35/1.8 DX is a fast lens. The 16-85/3.6 - 5.6 needs much more light to take a shot. However in most of the times you need a sharpness in a "depth of field", than you will also go to 4 or higher.
16-85 is a great lens.
