Criteria: Contestants submitted a photograph each, which were judged on the photographer’s ability to

capture the spirit of the outdoor adventure world.

Judges:

Corey Rich - Adventure photographer & filmmaker

Peter Dennen - Creative Director, Aurora Photos

Winner!

And the winner of Corey Rich's Outdoor Adventure Photo Contest

is ... Michal Cerveny! Michal will receive a Lowepro pack or bag (value $99-$500+USD) of his choice. Congrats!

Notes from Corey and Peter on selecting the winner:

The mountain-bike image is the winner. It's fantastic light and a beautiful composition. We really like the

feel of the dust and the biker positioned perfectly in the lower third of the photo, also the sunflare/starburst

coming through the tree. Very beautiful color palette and great moment/great composition.

The next 2 are honorable mentions. We like the attempt on both of these. These photographers are trying to push

themselves beyond what's comfortable in terms of technical skills and shooting at a time of day with light that

does not fit into the normal parameters of 1/60s, 1/20s, 1/125s. We like the idea that the photographer is

trying to use a nighttime environment to get stars in the sky and she's lighting the tent and has

subjects trying to stand still--this is great. The camping scene is an interesting composition, although the lens

distortion on the legs of the guy standing by the fire isn't all that flattering. Spinning fire on the beach is a

nice attempt at doing something that's outside the box. Not the most compelling composition and a little sloppy

on the upper right hand side in terms of not cropping out the tree but we like the idea that this shot is made

(or so it seems) at nighttime spinning fire/flashlights and using light that is outside the norm and probably outside this

    photographer's comfort zone.

Great effort across the board, really fantastic pictures.

  5.
Branding is an essential part of communicating with your prospective clients. A brand is a message about

who you are and what you stand for. To some extent, it encapsulates what people already feel about you and

your business, marketing materials that support that logo feel, and an overall presentation that can consistently

be summed up with 2 or 3 key words. These words will also be the words that resonate with the photographers, or

Notes from Kevin on selecting the winner:

Wow! Selecting a winner was hard! Thank you everyone for your great entries and taking the time to give it a try, we loved looking at them all and it was a close call. Our winner was Kate Callahan - congratulations Kate! The first thing I looked for was a logo that immediately gave me an emotional response and a "feeling" that I wanted to learn more about this photographer. That's the purpose of a good logo. Next, we followed that in to their other marketing materials, which should all support that feel and carry the brand message that was started with the logo. We looked for personality, style, and an overall brand message that was consistent with the images that hit you first. One thing I loved about Kate's home page was how well the images supported the design and feel of her site and logo. Even the subtle touch of the heart on the pink hat of the little girl carried the logo and brand message. All of her pieces were cleanly designed, with nothing confusing or overwhelming. There was a nice consistency throughout. All of her images had the same feeling as her brand message, which is great because when you have this consistency, you tend to draw clients to you that truly "get" you and generally are happiest with the work you do.

When you look at Kate's logo, you immediately get a sense of what her images will be like--I imagined loving, fresh, and spontaneous. That's exactly what you get when you visit her images and website. Great! Kate has managed to combine several categories of photography, using different fonts and sub-branding - which is generally a no-no, but it really works well for her. Rules were made to be broken! The sub-brands clearly identify that she is skilled in each of these categories and you get a feeling that each one is special in its own right. Congratulations Kate, you've done a really nice job branding yourself!

I want to point out that there really wasn't a bad entry at all. Everyone had great ideas and messages and it was hard to narrow it down to just one. If there is one thing that set the top 3 apart from the rest, it was a clear "feel" in the logo and branding materials that made you want to find out more about them. It drew you in. Once there, all the images in their primary pieces enhanced and supported the original feeling that brought you in. It all just came together.

Thanks again to all for your time to enter the contest and I hope you've picked up a few good tips to help you make things even a touch better. - Kevin Kubota
