  1. <p>Photoshop doesn't run on a Linux machine. Some people have managed to get old versions sort-of running using a program called "wine", but it always crashes eventually. <br>

    I have used Linux almost on my desktop almost exclusively for the last decade or so, but I still have an uber-cheap windows box nearby just to run Photoshop (and now, Lightroom) and make sure my Word-formatted documents look like they're supposed to.</p>

  2. <p><em> Internet accessibility of images amassed by governmental organizations, commercial entities and individuals is the basis of novel privacy violation claims. However, Internet distribution of images of both individuals and private places collected from public places remains lawful.</em></p>

    <p>Good article on your rights to photograph and display.</p>

  3. Definitely don't forget the state! There are 55 "Greenville"s in the US -- which means some states have TWO! -- not counting South Africa, Ireland, and Nicaragua , and those are just the ones I know of. (I researched this because a clueless manager once sent me to Greenville, Mississippi, instead of Greenville, South Carolina.)
  4. From New Scientist comes word of a new <a

    href="http://technology.newscientist.com/article/dn14477-artificial-eyeball-does-away-with-distortion.html">digital

    eyeball</a>. How long will it be before people start asking "What kind of sunglasses should I get for my new

    camera?"

    <p>

    <i>Mimicking the curves of a human retina has enabled a digital image sensor to take wide-angle pictures

    without distortion. This is possible thanks to an improved method of transferring silicon sensors onto a curved

    surface.</i>

  5. Try uploading full-size jpegs with a low quality; that's what we do, then set the largest viewable size to XLarge. If you use PS, for instance, save an image at level 5 or 6. That should allow your customers to order any size they want, and it will still look good on a monitor. You may have to experiment a bit to find a quality and display size that work for your images.
  6. Several surplus and thrift stores here sell old, broken, and obsolete medical and other electrical stuff: knobs, buttons and wires galore. A bag of blue or white shop towels from *mart would come in handy, along with a couple of lunch trays for "surgical instuments" - paint them with aluminum paint. And grab a few tileboard panels from a home improvement store for background.
  7. I wanted to check what I thought was a member's gallery but got:

    "Please install Flash and turn on Javascript."

    instead. I have the latest version of Flash, although It's usually turned off, and I trust PN (and by extension,

    Google, etc.) to run scripts already, so that should be no problem, and if PN were to present me with a stupid,

    proprietary, non-standard-compliant Flash animation I might just allow it (even though I'd swear the focus of

    this site is STILL-photography, and not video or animation), but in this case I'm not even given the option.

    I guess there's stuff here I'm just never going to see (sigh).

  8. Probably the Metz 58, which pumps out an ISO100 guide number of 190 (feet), but you should note that it's not even a half-stop brighter than the old Vivitar 283/285. Almost all the high-end units have about the same guide numbers. It's a matter of physics and packaging: you can pack just so much power into a shoe-mount flash without ripping the hotshoe right off the camera.
  9. I'm not familiar with the 440-Plus, but if it has a transformer it will work with a low-cost square-wave or pseudo-sine-wave inverter. If it has a solid-state voltage multiplier, it will require a pure-sine inverter. I've used a cheap inverter hooked up to a Honda Civic to power an old Speedotron 400 and an older Novatron 440 with no problems.

    If it turns out you need the pure-sine, the AB is probably your best solution.

    A 500-watt inverter can charge a 440 watt-second power pack in about one second.

  10. That's an interesting concept. I've done some paintings like that, where a "portrait" is defined by the negative space, what's NOT there instead of what is -- but they've were all in one piece. Perhaps you could do a series of studio pieces where a portrait or still-life echoes the emptiness of a juxtaposed cityscape. I can imagine an empty set of staircases, say, along side a high-fashion shot of a lady in an impossibly high collar which mirrors the wedge made by the sky in the other shot. If you do each pair in mirror-image, you can simply display them side-by-side.
  11. 1-inch EMT actually fits 1" PVC connectors pretty good -- just .024" oversize -- and makes a fairly good fit with

    1-1/4" copper connectors -- just .085" off. If you want it sturdy enough to climb on, use Schedule 80 connectors

    (twice the thickness, same pipe diameter); they're not usually carried at home improvement stores but an

    industrial/commercial plumbing house will have them on can get them. Also, there are PVC pipe caps available

    which will fit the EMT, just right to finish off a ragged end and/or make feet for the stand.

    Plastic and copper connectors will also fit 3/4" and 1/2" EMT. I've used them for a number of projects.
