  1. Ron, I don't think reinstalling MS Office will help. Perhaps you might want to reinstall PS instead and give it a chance to claim the files it lost to MS Office. But did you make sure you linked both TIF and TIFF back to PS in Windows Explorer? Maybe you linked one and forgot to link the other? Especially since you recently reloaded the OS, I doubt it's some funky bug. I'd think that you can resolve it with a simple configuration change.
  2. Data capacity and speed make one drive better than another. Cache memory can be misleading. A good way to compare speed is looking at the average seek time of the hard drives.

Personally, I wouldn't buy anything less than 7200rpm but I also don't think dishing out a lot of money for a 10,000rpm is worth it at the moment for an external drive because of the inevitable bottleneck which occurs at the housing to pc. If your computer supports it, firewire rather than USB lessens this bottleneck.

Also, do you plan to carry around your hard drive? If so, you will want to consider buying one with a case designed for better shock absortion.

At work, I've seen thousands of hard drives come and go over the years and I favor Western Digital.
