    Tom,

I put a net curtain over the window to soften the light. The room itself has quite pale walls so the light tends to bounce around a bit. It was a dull day too (fine British weather!) so that also helped. Exposure was 2 seconds at f22 on Neopan 400 and contrast range was about 5 stops.

I didn't need to do anything to the picture. It pretty much prints itself on grade 2. The scan you're looking at has lost some shadow detail (damn scanner) but the print looks about right.

Thanks again for the suggestions, I'll give them a try.

Tom, thanks for the suggestions -I think you're right about the background and the carpet idea sounds like it's worth a try. Originally I was going for the minimalist approach, but it leaves the picture lacking something.

Steve, the shot was lit using natural light from the window. I was trying to get those square window-like highlights you often see in illustrations of shiny objects. If you look in the reflection of the christmas decorations you can look all around my front room (and that's me trying to hide on the floor with the cable release in my hand :-) !
