Note: In the interests of balancing performance and quality, the topic of image file size and dimensions as normally posted to this recurring thread is under discussion elsewhere in the Nikon forum (the topic is obvious when you look) - please check in there and comment if you have thoughts to share! That's the best place to talk about that particular topic. For now, consider keeping uploads no larger than 1600 pixels on the long side when it matters, and sticking with 1000 pixels when the image feels no pain at that resolution. On data size/compression, try to keep things under 1mb, shooting for 600kb when you can stop there. Note that this includes photos hosted off-site (at Flickr, Photobucket, your own site, etc). Are you new to this thread? The general guidelines for these Wednesday threads are right here: Guidelines for Nikon Forum Wednesday Image Threads. For now, we're sticking with 1, 2, or 3 images per week as you see fit. A busy week has occurred, and you know what that means: Wayback Wednesday. This one's from 16 years ago, taken with the then-amazing D200 out on a walk in some pea soup fog along the edge of a lake. Truly a socked-in kind of day that was, to go with the socked-in week I'm having this week. So stay current, or get in the time machine - let's see 'em!

A SOCOM operator doing a smoke jump, and Thunderbird 7, calling the shots for Tbirds 1 through 6 overhead. Still the D810 with a 200-500/5.6. Next week? Maybe, maybe not. We'll see!

No doubt I'll do more of the same next week, so fair warning. Here, it was the trusty D810 and a Nikon 200-500/5.6 doing the work.

With a busy rest of June on the Supreme Court's ruling schedule, I was reminded of a time I was down in front of that court's building in DC - just across the street from the Capitol building - photographing some hubbub a couple years back. Here's one of the SCOTUS cops hanging back to let the protestors have their back-and-forth while he stays ready near the imposing front door.

The guy flying Number 5 was just about literally buzzing the neighborhood trees at a couple or three hundred miles per hour. Always good fun to watch. D810 with a Nikon 200-500/5.6.
  7. Well I TRIED to start the Nikon Wednesday thread this week, but something - possibly my barely awake self at 1:00am - didn't go right. So, thanks Shun for taking care of it. We found ourselves in Annapolis yesterday at the Naval Academy, watching the Blue Angels practice for this week's commissioning ceremony fly-by. There's just nothing quite like a handful of Super Hornets flying by at tree-top level. Whew! It was a damp, gray day, but they had a high enough ceiling to get in their practice runs.

Here, the central docks sit down the hill from the state house, which has illuminated scaffolding around it during some renovations. Perhaps we can enjoy some sunnier shots, this Nikon Wednesday. Go!

Our back yard irises are doing their crazy purple thing right now, and attracted me just like the bumble bees and the hummingbirds. D810 with an 85mm macro. Something tells me I won't be the only one posting a flower shot, here in the first half of May.

Here, we're inside the slightly hellish belly of an automated soldering system that uses a literal fountain of solder boiling up from a robot working surface to graze the bottom of a circuit board that moves in above it. The environment only allows for the briefest visit from a camera, since it's quite hot inside that machine. My trusty D810 and beloved 14-24/2.8 popped in for a a couple shots and back out before the camera rig or my hands and face were any worse for the wear.

For now, we're sticking with 1, 2, or 3 images per week as you see fit. Hello and a good Nikon Wednesday to all. This week, a quick behind-the-scenes shot of some very non-Nikon equipment I was using on site with a client. We needed what felt like a fly-through video sequence above a factory floor, but it wasn't a good environment for a drone. Here, I've got a Wiral cable cam transporting a DJI Pocket 2. That tiny little camera does a respectable job at capturing HD video, and I had full pan/tilt control talking to it from an app on my phone. The cable cam rig was stretched out over 100 feet between two pillars (had the facilities guy helping me out with a man lift machine - saves a lot of ladder time!). The machine gets shown where the end points are, and then I could tell it to crawl back and forth on the wire automatically - that way I could pay attention to the video output and compose my pans/tilts as it moved. Very effective! On one of its passes, grabbed this shot of it using the D810 that was there for stills in between video takes. These highly integrated, tiny gimbals, cameras, and other devices are revolutionizing lone ranger style one-man shoots in the field. Not long ago, the same images would have been nearly impossible in that space and would have required a crew and all day for a few shots. Amazing tools we have to play with these days! So, this week, shots of things you make shots with are officially allowed.

Been up to my eyeballs (be self employed, they said! you'll be your own boss, they said! wheee!). This week, a random grab from a recent product shoot. Put on your clubbing outfit, right? Look at that lighting! I know, it looks like stage design, but that was the director's point: it's an image for a panel in a trade show display, and the tone/color/look has to jive with that larger atmosphere. It actually works well when it you see it all together and this is just one little piece of it sandwiched between Large Blue Things. How about some images with more natural light, to wash away that intense blue? Go! D810 with an 85mm T/S on a tripod with RGB-adjustable LED lighting.

Because instead I'm nursing along an older file server that decided both its power supplies would die on me at the same time. I guess that's one way to be redundant! So, creating a Frankenserver out of old carcasses to get the data extracted from the victim one last time. Always have backups! And backups of your backups! So here's some server hardware, roaring loud fans in my laundry room where I can close the door on the racket. Z6 with a 35/1.4, FWIW. Share some Nikon Wednesday Goodness!

Still plowing through hundreds of gigs of video from a recent project, so this Nikon Wednesday will feature another essentially random moment out of hundreds. In this case, I was using a Nikon Z6 (with the lightweight 24-70/4) on a gimbal, walking around and capturing folks testing out newly assembled products on a factory floor. Here we have a tech working with some pressure vessels, making sure the product can operate in a vacuum as well as a hundred feet under salt water. This is why mil-spec stuff costs what mil-spec stuff costs! This is a simple 16:9 screen grab from within a video editor, having already applied some color grading to the material - in many ways the same as processing a still image, but in many other ways not.

Without getting into too much detail, it's a rig that calibrates inertial motion sensing devices that end up in aircraft. Stuff that's meant to operate in a such a life-or-death environment gets a mind-boggling degree of sophisticated testing beforit ever goes out the door. Now that we have THAT out of the way, let's seem something more glam. Share some photos! D810 with a Nikon 14-24/2.8

For now, we're sticking with 1, 2, or 3 images per week as you see fit. I'll be bugging this thread with odd shots out of last week's industrial project for the next few rounds. For this Nikon Wednesday, it's a look down the maw of an automated circuit board quality analysis machine that can do in a minute what it used to take a technician a couple of hours to do with older equipment. My customer has invested millions in their revamped assembly process and getting their people retrained around a wildly different way of doing things - faster, better, and with a huge compliance record keeping wake behind it. I could have spent weeks in there doing stills and video, but we had to make do with just a couple of sessions this time around. So, fair warning: I'll be posting lots of blinky lights, mysterious hardware, tools, and technicians for a the next few weeks. Somebody post something organic to warm and fuzzy things up!

See, it's midnight and I'm supposed to be loosening my cravat, sipping a bit of bourbon, telling the butler he can turn in for the night, and then leisurely scrolling through a brilliant week's shooting of picturesque landscapes inhabited by compelling creatures and lovely humans - all to launch the Nikon Wednesday thread with style, panache, and a sense of wonder. Nope. I'm picking through a mountain of gear and prepping for an early morning of shooting stills and video on a client's factory floor. What's funny is that I now look at this and think, "Hey! Traveling light for a change!" - no light stands, lights, scrims, backdrops, redundant video cameras, mic booms, 100 pounds of batteries, a drone, c-stands, teleprompter, monitors, and everything else. This feels like going on vacation, it's so minimal. I'm sure I'm forgetting something. But this is a nearly live Nikon Wednesday shot, and maybe I'll have something interesting from the morning's project to share next week. Off to bed! I will dream of you all sharing the glamorous work that I didn't do this last week. Go!

But the product photography needs are still there. A regular client makes something that you don't see on Amazon or at the hardware store. This was a challenge, because the convex exterior is shiny and therefore the devil to work with, and I had to sneak a speedlight in SU-4 (optical slave) mode inside the helmet so the internal eyepiece could be backlit and seen through the tinted visor. This shot took hours, as simple as it appears to be. Got any deceptively simple images to share? Or anything at all, for that matter! A good Nikon Wednesday to all.

Late on Tuesday night when I'd normally be doing that very thing, I was up late, on site with a truck load of gear, working my way through some creative and technical issues. We were documenting a class given by a company that provides live fire training with night vision equipment. In this shot, you can see the student (a US Marine moving on from the USMC to work for a federal protective agency) connecting a shot with a steel target about 75 yards away. In the pitch dark, the impacts produce some nice molten-copper-jacket fireworks. We rigged up some subtle LED lighting back on the line so I could use a fast lens on a Z body for some successful images in really challenging circumstances. This project would have been literally impossible not very long ago.

This week has me documenting some hardware for a client, and we're about 600 images in so far (whew). Along the way, we were working with a bulk battery charging device that's used in the field on deployments. That world runs on radios, and radios run on lots and lots of big lithium batteries. So, a snapshot of that hardware while we were working. Show me something a little more organic, please! D810 with a 24-70/2.8

Maybe I'll just start every Nikon Wednesday for all of 2022 with a Wayback Wednesday post. Or not, we'll see. But for now: some curb-side snow-meets-sun scenery from a storm a few years back. The ol' D600 and a 50/1.4, I believe. Show some photos!
