I wasn't being obtuse in asking, i'm pretty new to this and didn't want to appear to be lecturing. :D

i'm using f8, focal length of 50 mm, 1 second shutter, iso 100 and off camera flash with a black background and off course incense sticks.

i then bump up the brightness and contrast a bit.

i hope that helps you achieve results that you are happy with and i look forward to seeing them.
