  1. Scott,

    Thanks for your reply.

Were you at Kona this year yourself and did you take some photos again this year as well?

I liked the photos you took last year, especially the suppport crew as this is really what makes the events great.

Have managed to get hold of some good images this year.

Intend to make it to Kona someday soon, but at about $2000 USD return from NZ it will have to be a good trip.

So many decent photographers out there capturing the moment out of passion these days and posting their photos all over the web is what I am finding. The only thing is they aren't sorting out the dud images many times, which takes away a bit from their efforts.

    Thanks again from Grant Baird.

  2. Would like to obtain 15-25 good images from this years World champs ironman in Kona. They will be used on my

    website triathlonshots.com

Am happy to pay for these images but am not after the original files. Only require low resolution images of around

500kb's as they will only be used on the internet. Photographers name(website), will be put at the top of the page.

This site is really just a passion of mine and it is getting enough regular viewers to encourage me to carry on with it.

Only recently have i added some short stories to it, for example the Monaco 70.3 coverage.

Am also after more ironman coverage from Nth America so don't hesitate to contact me if you would like to publish

    something.

Happy to answer questions related to this site.

Well I got a good response last year and made up some great event pages as a result:

  3. Hi,

I have a website called triathlonshots.com and it has been up and running for

    just over a year now.

I am interested in obtaining top qualty photos from events such as ITU World

Cup Triathlons, Ironman and 70.3 races, Xterra and other interesting

    multisport events.

Each event page will use around 20 large images.

The site is getting new viewers everyday, and if your photos are used, the

photographers name and website can be put on the page(as is the case for

ironman Nice and ironman Coeur d'lene).

    Thankyou from Grant Baird.

  4. Interesting to read all of the above.

Am using a couple of d200's with the 70-200Vr lens to shoot all aspects of triathlon.

I find the VR slows the d200 down when shooting the cycle section, and therefore it is of no use in this situation. Because I keep very busy when shooting an event I don't switch the VR back on.

Only turn the VR on when shooting sports action from a boat(rolling sea), and it worked well doing this.

Maybe using the faster D3, is enabling the VR to be of more use. Also I photograph all handheld with the 70-200VR lens.

  5. Thanks to everyone that replied. Have used some great images supplied by both Lee Shelly and Scott Wilson. The resulting webpage is just what was desired for the site. Will stay in touch with all those who have made contact and plan to keep improving the triathlonshots.com site.

Any photographers who maybe interested in displaying their work on the site of an ironman/triathlon event are also very welcome. The aim is to get the photos up within days of the events completion. Photographers who have the sole rights to cover events are also welcome to display images such as is the case with the U.K Xterra race.

  6. Hope to make it to Kona next year. Have been looking at some great shots of golf taken looking over the crowds in the latest Sports Illustrated. They look like they were taken with a 400mm lens?

Crowds can be interesting to show how big an event is, and the emotion.

There are some useful techniques for getting images in a crowd. Some of these techniques were used when I photographed the mens world champs triathlon in Germany, so you can work it out if you check them out. My contacts are on photo.net and my website, so hope to hear of your good results.<div>00Me65-38662084.JPG.993120c92e9cfb29985528aca74e991e.JPG</div>

  8. Hello,

I also shoot many triathlon events and have a website dedicated to it.

Most enquiries for photos relate to shots on the bike. Action shots of climbing where the athletes are working hard stand out.

There is a big mix of images for each event covered, on my site and you are welcome to skim them for ideas at triathlonshots.com

With short events of less than 2 hours duration, I prefer to use two cameras as the it saves time changing lenses. I agree however that you can get most of the shots you require with a 70-200mm lense.<div>00M1dp-37676184.JPG.4f48db7b108cd0c5b23739a2ffcccf8a.JPG</div>

  9. Hi, shooting from a boat is a great challenge. Had a go at this on three different days this Summer.

Choose the calmest day possible and also and area without other boats wakes. Propped myself against the interior boats side and shot standing. Had the camera set on continuous, fast AF and fired away.

Holding the shutter release half down locks the focus, so tried this at times.

Also tried my nikon 70-200mm lens with both VR on and off. Had better results with VR off as find VR slows the AF a bit.

    Do experiment a bit!

Got my best water ski shots from the shore with a fast telephoto lens.

Will certainly give the manual settings a go also next Summer as per the suggestions above. Have added a couple of water ski/wake boarding shots to my portfolio.

Capturing wakeboarding can also be good practice as we have the boat going a bit slower, so AF has a fraction longer to focus. Got plenty of usable shots and more practice resulted in more usable shots.

  10. I would have booked my round the world flight tickets so that I could have done it. Photographing triathlons is my specialty also which you will see by clicking on my name on this site or my website triathlonshots.com.

So you are wanting every athlete photographed to sell online or are you after someone to do it in a promotional style.

Am sure someone reading this forum could step up to the mark.

Good to see you offering the opportunity.<div>00LFsm-36644784.thumb.jpg.98fd39473f95b94fba533d619dad1947.jpg</div>

  11. hi Mark,

I weighed in on the discussion to gain some further knowledge, and your reply has me thinking. Have been using a nikon d200 myself, and while it is good in many ways, have had mixed sucess at shooting in bursts. Will be trying a few techniques to improve on this.

5 sharp images in 1 sec will be good enough for me, but 5 (or 8) non-sharp images is annoying.

The high speed cropping(hsc) as part of shooting 8fps on the d2xs sounds good on paper and it says it results in a picture angle compared to a 35mm lens with double the focal length. I look forward to someday trying the d2xs at 8fps, and comparing it to the 8fps of the d2hs.

  12. I am guessing the nikon d2xs is not being mentioned because it is in a different price bracket? My understanding is that the d2xs is nikons state of the art camera, and this will give best results for what you are after.

I have just posted a bunch of surfing photos on my website at liveXsport.com. All of these were taken by timing single shots. I am only getting into sport photography and find this gives superior results over shooting in bursts.

  13. Hi Anthony,

no doubt your plan is not unique, but I am sure if you have the drive/skills it will work. I am just starting to get more serious about sports photography, and would be interested to have further discussions with yourself. You can see a bit of my background on my website; www.triathlonshots.com . This website is only in its infancy and so far providing me with much enjoyment. Am still open to/exploring different avenues for it at this stage. Grant.
