1.
Some friends have just joined a flag football league, and I just tried to shoot one of their games, using a Canon T2i DSLR. They're playing at night, under artificial lighting.
Obviously, fast-moving sports at night is a challenge, and you're pretty much forced to use a wide aperture and high ISO. However, what I noticed most is that the stadium lights are really unforgiving. Illuminated skin gets blown out, and anything that's not lit directly is at best underexposed, at worst in deep - and harsh - shadow.
Does anyone have any tips for getting the best results in this situation?

  2. I'm using Hamrick Software's VueScan 8.3.79 running on a PowerBook G4, connected to a Nikon Coolscan

IV ED, scanning color transparencies. When I select the Infrared Clean (light) option, I get a curious visual

    artifact.

The problem shows up most obviously on images with large amounts of blue sky. The top and right-hand

side of the scanned image appear slightly lighter than the body of the image. The main part of the image

is a little darker by comparison, and the darker region appears to 'fall off' into the light strip in a more or

less smooth gradient. The light 'strip' at top and right is perhaps 1/20th of the width of the image in

    extent.

The problem appears to be associated with IR cleaning of the image; when I turn that off, the effect goes

    away.

Has anyone else seen this? Is it unique to Vuescan and/or this particular scanner model? Does it indicate

some other problem, such as a dusty mirror?
