This photo is perfectly exposed, the whites in the dog and in the snow contain sharp details. The colors are superb; the composition is great. There is no way a photographer could rate this average or below.
As to the changes in PN, Philip Greenspun, the founder of PN, stated in his Jan. 07 editor's letter that "We'll be eating spaghetti and broccoli every night until we figure out some other brilliant strategy for making money." He was talking about new ads for the site. Now we who have paid memberships have the privilege of scrolling through long Amazon ads before we can get to the critiques of a picture. This is what AD-ministration has worked on instead of the rating system, etc., to improve the stated educational purpose, and this is why another photo site on the net is looking better and better for those of us seeking to improve our photos and the skills required to attain them.

Excellent pose and exposure. White birds are always difficult, and you did a great job.

Exceptional color and composition. I even like the white (snow or seed?) on the tip of the bill.

Beautiful color and perspective.

Excellent detail.

Excellent scene of wildlife in action. It's not all about soaring or posing. The photo is exposed well with good detail and depth of field. Congrats!

Very good duet. And I like the fact that the waves are not blurred as they could have been in this type of shot.

Very good pose and colors. Using auto against the white snow has made the subject a bit dark. Another winner, however.

If there are bird angels, this is surely one. Very detailed even to the two drops of water on the lower breast. Really well-done, Dale!

A beautiful mood piece. "There's Providence in the fall of a sparrow."

Good composition; excellent detail and color.

Excellent detail. This ought to silence those "no bird feeder" purists. Congratulations!

Very nice cardinal on ice. I particularly like that you were able to keep texture in the snow without any burn out. Congrats!

The bird seems to poke its head and breast out of the darkness to proclaim boldly, "Here I am." A very interesting shot.

Very colorful bird. There is a bit of wash out in the leaves and water, difficult to avoid on a sunny day, but in general a very good photo. Perhaps a polarized filter would help.

Fresh and original composition with wonderful colors and detail.

Exceptional exposure. The water with the reflection almost looks like glass. The soft colors are beautiful. Would like to see a little more space at the right in case you mat this one.

Really like this. The blue background enhances this great shot.
