View from just below a bridge. The water seems to jump "in and out" of

the rocks as it flows. Very little I could do to screw up something

    that was already so beautiful.

  1. Very pretty. You must have enjoyed being there as much as taking this picture.

The little branch sticking up there is a bit distracting. I wish the water was either devoid of the lilies or the reflection wasn't there, but with both its again a bit distracting. Still all in all its very beautiful.

    Andy,

I think you have found what I am still searching for. Ever since I shot the "Blue Rope" in my collection (which you rated), I have been searching for a similar inspiration. In trying out so many subjects and so many things, I found that that image (and quite a few of yours including this one) have an inexplicable "feeling" to them. I am still trying to figure out why? Why should a picture of a plumbing fixture be so interesting? Yes there are other elements in play here, but the subject is still.. well a tap.

I hadn't paid attention to the ratings and such until curiosity got the best of me yesterday and I snooped through the "who gave me ratings" page and randomly browsed from there until I landed on your pics.

Keep developing whatever you feel to recognize such a composition. These are all very powerful images.

  2. I find it very intriguing as the rest of the commentors. I actually thought that the pow next to this picture seems very .. lack luster.

After looking at the pic for a few there is just this irksome nagging feeling of wanting to see MORE of the dredger, like I wanted to move more to the left and see the side of the boat, see its features. Other than that the picture captivated me, drawing my eyes to the bright window the things stuck in it, the feeling that the captain and crew's gone home to their families and enjoying dinner.

  3. Let me start by saying I like the picture. Yes its a bit tightly cropped. Still, I like it.

I was curious more as to what method you were using to "catch" the fast moving bike at that spot? was it "I'm going to click when he comes into the frame and hope I can react fast enough?" or did you have a better more productive method?

There is one thing I have been waiting to do. I want to take a shot like that except I want the wheels to be blurred. So overall the biker is crisp (shutter speed high enough to freeze him and the bike) but the wheels are blurry to enhance the feeling of "SPEED!" (shutter speed low enough to allow the blurring).

That is the reason (I think) for some of the people saying its too "static".

But a neat magazine quality pic. Kudos!

  4. The following are some of the thoughts that went through my head while reading this page. I didn't number these in any particular order.. just the way they popped into my head.

    1. I almost wonder if the photo.net people put this up just to create such a controversy.

    2. Few years ago, digital wasn't acceptable to purists. Then again 20 years ago probably automatic cameras weren't either.

    3. From what I have experienced thus far, photography to me is like poetry. Everyone knows the words, but can everyone arrange them in the way, say Shakespear did? Similarly, it is the uniqueness of perspective that we admire in photography.

    4. In the future, what if there are other ways to take pictures. May be holography? May be there are films designed for the same lattitude viewing as our retina? Or devices that have photoshop type of softwares built in to render different versions as we take pictures?

    5. It seems there is an olympus digital camera that fires off 5 shots when you hold the shutter halfway down. So if you are about to take an action picture you can actually have the choice of 6 shots for each time you clicked. Is that cheating?

    6. I kinda do agree with some of the "anti" posts, in the sense that yes its very creative, but its not today's mainstream photography. I do expect to learn more from others with cameras rather than scanners. Yes it could appear on the front page of photo.net, but no, not as "photograph" of the week. But this discussion is as diverse and almost as unending as one with the question "is there god?".

I say today's mainstream because like I mentioned before, digital would have had the same reaction a few years ago in similar circumstances.

.. just some of my thoughts..

still amazed that a fungus can cause this magnitude of a ruckus.. lol

  5. I find that in a lot of pictures that I like, I like them to evoke or stir some kind of an emotion.

This one comes fairly close, but there is still something missing. I find it doesn't quite get through to me.

However, I admire your idea of photographing such quotidian items but rendering a unique perspective.
