1.
I'm back in the midwest for Christmas and trying to help my neice with her new D5100. The camera's LCD display is active for 10 seconds and then goes blank. Guess this is the default setting. Where in the menu can she find the adjustments for the different times? BTW, we've gone over the manual and can't seem to find it there. Thanks for your help.
Kind regards,
Rich.

 2.
Richard, I also use both slide and negative film, and like you, scan with the Coolscan 4000. You should be able to get very good results from both types. I just retuned from the Eastern Sierra, last weekend shooting the fall color. I did use both slide and negative. Portra 160VC and Fuji Pro 160S. a few initial results can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jmt_man/sets/72157624973299153/
So far it looks like the Portra scans a bit better than the Pro. Just my experience!
Best wishes for your endeavor.

 3.
Marc, the man-made firefall was for real, and quite a spectacular sight to behold. I can still hear the cry from Camp Curry, "let the fire fall!" I was fortunate to witness it many times from the mid 50's up to 1968, the last year it was held. From your link, click on reader contributions for personal accounts. Also PBS has available a DVD from a California's Gold segment on the history of the firefall, for those interested.

 4.
Been interested in many of the comments on various forums about the incompatibility of Nikonscan and Apple's Snow Leopard! I recently upgraded to the new 21.5 inch iMac with OSX.6.4, but kept my eMac running tiger to run my Coolscan 4000. Finally decided to migrate Nikonscan 4.02 over to the iMac. Turned on the scanner, found NKS 4.02 in the iMac's apps folder, clicked it and it popped right on! Got all the pallets, set prefs, and went scanning away! Only clitch so far after several scans, the auto preview doesn't want to work. I have to manually start the preview scan by clicking the preview button. Everything else just works great! I've been trying the silverfast demo, but I'm staying with Nikonscan, for now anyway. Should mention I use the nikonscan in stand alone mode.

 5.
after scanning @ 4000ppi on my coolscan 4000, viewing @ 100% the C-41 processed Portra looked pretty good. No scratches, no finger prints! Some minor and randomly appearing dark specs show, but are easily removed with Ice. E-6 was a different matter in that I observed a light horizontal line running the length, near bottom of each 6frame strip. Again this was easily handled by the digital Ice. Dark specs were evident mostly in the highlight areas. No handling damage was evident. So, my first impression of Sudden Photo is, I'll use them again, even tho it's roll machine processing, if I can't get local dip n' dunk! They are better than the other usual 1hour outfits!

 6.
Well, today I finally made it over to 2nd street in Berdo, to try out Sudden Photo Imaging. Left them with one roll of Portra and one roll of Velvia 100. Process only! If you go, their located just east of the 215, 2nd street exit! Look for the MacDonalds on the right. Their on the plaza behind Mc D's! I'll post my initial results as I get the film back and start to scan....

 7.
Bob, it's been quite awhile since I last sent in to A&I, but I just checked their website and all the related info is available in pdf. http://www.aandi.com/E6_OptionsForm.pdf . As for E-6 processing, in the past I've requested mounted (plastic), sleeved (un-cut), sleeved (cut). I just purchased more mailers and will likely be using them again since my local pro lab might not make it into the new year! A&I has delivered good results for me in the past, here's hoping that continues! Waiting on the mail is another issue...
