1.
Andrea, i do have the M7 and MP in .58 and the VF has a wider coverage than my 24mm lens, kind of 22mm.
When i use the 24mm lens on my M2 (quite often) i don't use the external view finder knowing it's more than the 28mm coverage i get from the .72 VF...
For exemple i had this set up (M2/24mm) for a 2 month shooting in India and china, and with practice you will know what you get on film...
Hope this would help...

  2.
Georg,
i know your concern as i had the same issue...
1- do not process your C41 in one hour mini lab system, has they process in a hot developer to speed up the process in ~30 min., that will give you a lot of grain, but use deep dunk process which take an 1h20 min. at 68 degree including drying, and that is the only way to not get too much grain.
2- rate your film at 2/3 of stop less than the ISO, and process Normal (eg. 400 @ 250 on your camera) or 160 @ 100, overexposing it will not over acentuate the grain of your film when processing, and please use pro film low ISO for good result, i use Kodak 160 NC.
Then use a lab with a NORITSU minilab 4x6 printer, and not a Frontier brand, this will make a huge difference in contrast and grain on the final print result.
I am using for the past 15 years C-Lab on Broadway and Bleecker for my C-41 and they never missed one roll, no water mark or anything. They do have both machine so make sure to tell them NORITSU for the prints. If you pay cash in advance then they give you 20~30% off and you will be under $20.
Also Anil at Bleecker foto does a good job on minilab.
I do use 68 degree at LTI for my B&W process as they use XTol for standard developer and quite good for the smooth film grain, and yes Jason is great.
So now you know the trick for a perfect picture, and trust me they will look great up to 16x20 and sometime 20x24...
good luck...

  3. I don't know if this is old news, but a new company and new batch of 35mm APX 100 and 400 are for sale in switzerland and germany.

I would have to go thru the 500 rolls i have in my fridge first, but that's good news anyway!

    take care.

  4. Ian, I do agree with Tony on the SLR vs RF lenses quality/design, I have a RE and

R6 with a 21+35+50mm. The R body is very noisy compare to a m series, it does

the usual CLONK" with a noisier winding mechanism.

I did use my 21mm on my 5D and the canon 24-105mm was sharper at 24 than was

the Leica SA 21, they are about 20 years a part and new technology is way superior

in quality than it use to be.

For instense my Mamiya 7 lenses are 10x better than my 10 year old Hassy

lenses, coating and resolution far superior than anything else, also because it's a RF

designed lens compare to the Hassy design.

Having used my R series for 20 years on jobs i find the quality to be inferior from

new SLR equipment and M leica's lenses, that's why it's taking the dust for the past

7 years. Don't buy an R if you have already the best gear in hand...

As far as Steven comment, well it does not apply to you as it is a matter of AF and

looking thru a lens for accurate framing a pro choose a SLR as it as been intended

    to...

  5. Richard, i contacted the company in the UK, will see when they get back to me.

thanks for your help, i do have a regular 39mm filter but it's too risky with everything

hanging by one thread, i rather have the right fit and not loose the hood.

I would like to order a B+W ES filter but no one knows the I.D #, so if one of you knows

about it please forward it to me.

Also if i can't find the B+W, and you are interested to custom order a dark yellow and a UV

filter with me, let me know.

    Thanks again.

  6. thanks guys,

he was a bit grumpi at first but then he was ok and we talk for a bit, it's the 2nd time i see

    him.

I have been taking self portrait over the years with Avedon, W.Klein, B.Davidson, etc... and

with patience i will maybe get a portrait of him and me, who knows...

    r.

  7. Hi all,

with all this technology talk, one doesn't seem to worry too much about it, just pop in Robert's studio

30min ago wile he was working on is typewriter...

I wish life was as simple!

    r.

ps; had my M7 in my hand and was quite tempted to take is portrait, just knowing he would say no

    anyway...

  8. Hello,

Thanks for those who help me to decide on my 90 Elmar-C, works beautifully.

Now i do have problems finding a dark yellow and a UV filter for it.

Does any one know a brand with a serial # to order it?

I have been to B&H, Photovillage and couldn't find it.

your help would be time saving.

    Thanks again.

  9. thanks for the idea of an adapter, but i 'm thinking to sell once for all my R system, i don't

work with it anymore, i love it but too much money sitting on gear.

Once i was thinking to part out my M2 cause i was using it once a year, now from 3 R body

and 6 R lenses i am doing a complete switch to the M. It is better for vacation and to carry

    it around for snapping.

    The forum was help full to make a decision, M7 o.58 + Tri-Elm 2nd series + 24mm +

    zeiss 25/28 finder.

I will get use to a clean wide angle, which is not bad for architecture...

    thanks all.

  10. Thanks all,

i bought a .58 to be able to use the 24mm with out the view finder as Rob is doing, and

this is why i wanted to buy a 24mm and not a 21mm. Also as a prime lens the 24mm

would be a good one too for architecture, some times the 21 is a bit too wide.

John, thank you to explain on the barrel distortion corrected on the M lenses, now i know

    if i take a 21mm it won't match my R 21.

I might stay with the 24mm choice and get a 25/28 zeiss finder to do the job on the M2 as

    well.

Rob, you were saying the M2 doesn't have a 28mm frame, so then 35/50/90 right?

  11. i just got today my new m7 .58 Chrome and i have to say it has been a long time that a new camera as

made me happy. Mamiya 7 was to make my life easy wile i was traveling, my hassy was side tracking me

from vacation...the 5D make me want to quit my job, and the new baby m7 make me stick with

photography and reminded me why i have become a photographer in the first place!

Here my question and you have been there before me and i think your help will be important. For 18

years my favorite lens was the 21 R Super-Angulon and i have used it 95% of the time, let's say it match

my eye. Now i have been reading a lot about the 24 Asph. to be an amazing lens and I was until today

going to purchase one but had a second thought. Everybody are saying the 24mm have very little

distortion, but i do like the distortion on my Super-Angulon and would like to hear if some of you had a

chance to compare them. I will buy a tri-elmar for my M2 and need a prime lens for the m7...21 or 24mm?

It took me that long to switch system, but it's never too late!

Tomorrow i will take it for a ride...with a 1960 Cron' f5cm...no other m lenses to play yet!

    Thanks for your thought.

  12. Does any one can give me some feed back on a Tri-Elmar E55 compare to the E49. I need to decide on

    which Tri-Elmar to pick.

I have a M2 and just bought a M7 for travel purpose, and would like to use a 24mm on one body with a

tri-Elmar on the 2nd one. I use filters and was thinking of getting 55mm size for both lens.

Does any one can tell me if the 1st Tri-Elmars are giving you good result or you wish you had the newer

    one?

Also if any one wish to get a black M8, my camera store K&M in nyc just got 2 of them today...

here there link: www.kmcamera.com + Tel: 212-523-0954 (Tribeca)

    thanks!

  13. thanks everyone, i thought i could get away by getting the cheaper one, but with a 0.58 i

think it will really get on the way of the view finder. I think of selling my RE and 21+35+50 to

finance a m24 and the tri-elmar. I Hate to do this but with the 5D replacing my R's at 99% of

my job it forced me to sell my R6 and now the rest of it... but the M's will do cary on until???

    many thanks...
