1.
I am not familiar with any professional labs in Kyoto but I would have to imagine that there could be (given that it is a large city). You could try contacting the Yodobashi Kyoto location and see what they suggest.

 2.
I have used a lot of their stuff because the price is right and the quality fine. Supposedly the HGX is a rebranded Hoya (I forget the hoya series). I would steer clear of the cheaper stuff but the HGX works well. I recently bought of one their teleconverters on a lark and I am 98% sure it is just a rebadged Kenko 300.

 3.
I recall reading about a processor upgrade in the late 90's where they were installing the equivalent of a i486 25mhz processor. The explanation was that it was a proven technology - no need to be cutting edge in space if that meant an increased potential for failure.

 4.
I have both the Tamron 24-70mm VC and the 24-105mm L. Specifically for event photography I think there maybe some advantages to the 2.8. I really like the 24-105L. I think it is a fabulous lens. But I had a hankering for a faster lens that had some kind of stabilization. I've been surprised by how good the VC system is.
FWIW I just shot a cover with the 24-70mm VC that you can check out at that link.

 5.
thanks for the info. I've never suffered a failure quite like that though I did have a 750R that had some kind f failure resulting in the inability to adjust the power.

I used the 750R in AC mode with both the VB II and now the VML. I can't say I used the hell out of it but I've rented the former a few times and own a couple of the latter. The one thing I will note is that you can't run two off of one VML. They will both fail to charge.

Oh and in a more basic note - they've worked fine with the battery power from the mini lithium but you may have different luck. My 750R's are a few years old.

 6.
I've used them with the same 750R Travelites without issue so YMMV. On the other hand I have had to have the travelite serviced but that was because of a different failure covered under warranty. I used the VML. It is worth noting thought that while the VML worked fine with a single 750R it would fail to charge either if I plugged in two.

But, as they say, past performance is not an indicator of future success.

 7.
Hey All,
I picked one of these up today and took it for a spin. I have a lot more time to spend with it but so far so good. I want the pictures to speak for themselves and I don't think my using a lot of adjectives will help any.
I posed about in on my blog. In the coming days I plan to use it more and will continue to post.

 8.
I find the logic of how printers figure in bothers me a lot. The new consumer printer has some kind of point value but my large format iPF6100 does not. I know the reasons (the different divisions of the company) but as a consumer it makes no sense.

 9.
Mark (the OP) has been a client and a friend. He is a highly skilled technician and the owner of a small repair shop. Shops like his service professionals from around the country. I know his clients include some famous institutions, NFL team photogs, and countless other groups of professionals and amateurs. I believe the promise of a business like his is personalized service, generally lower pricing than Nikon for repair, and fast turnaround. Now, this may sound like an advertisement for Mark but it isn't intended to be - it's just the basis of his business.

I think it is important be aware that small repair shops offer a unique product to professional photographers - they can save time and money and offer great service.

I don't have a horse in this race - except that I am a professional photographer so having a local shop like Mark's is very important to me. Of course I'm a Canon shooter so this doesn't hurt me... yet. I shoot Nikon film though.

 10.
I would like to save a bit of money and not buy the name brand replacement modeling lights (at $30 or so apiece for a 250w halogen bulb).
I believe the base for the travelite modeling light is the e-26 type? Does anyone know if this bulb would do the job or am I missing something in the specs? Cowboy Studio seems to have a similar bulb but it says something about 2-5 months to ship on those.
Many thanks!

 11.
I understand the issue to some degree. Though I don't like the oversized bodies (Dx). I do like having a good grip on the camera.
Hey John (jon?) - why did you black out the Fujifilm on your S5?
Now if Fuji would come out with a real S6 and have it full frame I would be interested.

 12.
Hey Ray,

If I could take only one nikon lens with me and it was a prime I would take the 24mm f2.8. BUT, I would check and see that the AF 24mm if the same optical formula as the classic 24mm 2.8

FWIW. I think Galen Rowell shot a lot with the 24mm 2.8 in that area and his photos turned out very nicely.

 13.
Where are these lights being used? Recently I have debated downgrading from Travelite (Bowen's Calumet brand) 750r's to AB because the AB's are smaller and much lighter. When moving across systems you are dealing with different speed-rings. So, there are some additional costs.
The Paul Buff Einstein is very intriguing as well.
FWIW I have been a fairly light (no pun intended) user of the travelites. But I have had to send one in for repair.
