  1. Got my D3 yesterday and wow, what a camera! This is my first pro body. I shoot wedding mainly and have been using

D300 and D50, now I will just give the D50 to wife and ask her to learn photography :-)

I tried ISO1600, and I can't barely see much noise! And then tried 3200, totally usable after clean up. I keep

800 as the max when shooting with D300 and now won't be afraid to go 1600 and occasionally, 3200.

Here will be my setup -- 70-200VR goes on D300 and 24-70 goes on D3. This way, the long goes longer and wide gets

    wider.

I ordered it last Friday for $4,699, today Amazon is showing $4,514! Called them and received a refund for the

    difference.

For those who's debating between D3 and D700, I think it's totally worth the difference of $1,500.

  2. I've gone through the same debate and decided to go with D3. First of all, the battery grip is a must for me, so if I go with D700, that means extra $200. The dual memory card slot is essential for wedding photographers. Shutter life is tested as 300,000, double the life of D700; plus, at least one extra stop of ISO.

All these are very important for shooting weddings. Don't know what you shoot, but for extra $1,700 over D700, it's well worth it.

  3. I suddenly couldn't get my SB800 to get into TTL/BL mode. After TTL, there is no TTL/BL mode. I haven't figured what

caused this ... will it depent on the lens? Or exposure mode? Camera is D300 by the way.

    Thanks!

  4. Thank Talitha! I've already talked to the bride, she is totally aware and she asked me to make my own judgement. She doesn't care either way. So that's why I am asking what position would you be? Thanks again.
  5. I am shooting a wedding next month where the church has a specific rule for

    photographer -- stantionary!

Basically I have to pick a spot and stand there for the whole ceremony. I am

thinking maybe reserve myself a seat in the center location of the aisle so I can

shoot people walking down and pass me as well. After everybody walks and

ceremony starts, I will just step out and stand in the middle of the aisle and shoot

    from there.

What's your experience with this situation? I mean what is the one best spot to

shoot the entire ceremony? There is actually a balcony in the back of the church,

even if my 70-200 can reach close enough (I seriously doubt), I won't be able to

shoot people walking down the aisle.

    Any tips/advice are greatly appreciated!

  6. Please help me verify my understand of aperture opening diameter and amount of

    lights coming in.

    Use two lens as example, 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4. For 50mm f/1.4, the

maximum aperture diameter will be about 35.7. For 85mm f/1.4, it is 60.7.

Does this mean, althought both lens are set to f/1.4, 85mm is able to capture

much more light than the 50mm? Therefore allowing a much faster shutter speed

    under the same lighting condition?

    Thanks!

  7. I am planning to set up a studio for portraits, I have the budget for one

softbox, one reflector, one backdrop with support system.

Two questions -- for the backdrop, is it better to buy a canvas backdrop or a

chroma key (blue/green) then add the background to the image digitally?

Second question, I have budget for another light, would you recommend a hair

light using a boom kit or a backdrop light? Which one provides more overall

    value to the setup?

    Thanks a lot!

  8. I don't quite understand you, in a previous post you replied to someone who had similar question, here is your answer:

"The 55-200 AF-S VR is a better choice, it has VR and it has AF on the D40x.

If you need the 300mm reach, try the 70-300 4.5-5.6 VR. That lens cost about $460."

You were able to recommend one over the other for other people.

  9. I've been looking for the lens as well and one day accidently, saw it in stock at B&H, as soon as I ordered it, it's gone. Even though I subscribe to the "Notify Me When In Stock" email, I think it was sold out faster than they can send the emails out. In the meantime, photozoneonline.com has it in stock, but I couldn't trust the company enough to spend that much money yet.

I'd bookmark the page of the lens for several websites and keep checking them.

It's a fantastic lens for wedding/event. Good luck!

  10. I am sure many of wedding photographers here shoot with two bodies (each with

lens attached). What do you use for strap?

I recently tried having two bodies, one permanently on my neck, the other on my

right shoulder. The one on the neck is not a problem, but the one on the

shoulder, the strap is too short, so I constantly have to unload the camera

from the should and basically hold it in my hand. When done, put it back on the

shoulder. Not an easy and quick transition between two bodies.

How do you do this? Special straps? Put the other one in a bag that you carry?

    Thanks for any advice!
