  1. <p>I have one of my SB-900 flash on the camera, used as commander; another SB-900 on a lightstand, as remote. I find that if I move a little away from the remote, it won't trigger. I have to be really close. But if I use my SU-800 controller, it works with a much farther distance.<br>

Exactly what is the distance limitation a SB-900 commander can trigger a remote? I can't seem to find this number.<br>

    Thanks!</p>

  2. <p>It's all intentional. He paid me for a portrait session but the check bounced. I wasn't able to collect and he refused to pay. I emailed him several JPG files after I receive the check before it was cleared (will never do that again!) and he's been using those files without my permission.<br>

I do not consider him client anymore and he is extremely rude too.<br>

I don't think there is any problem with establishing the copyright, I shot the image, and it's an image of him. I can register the copyright, no problem. But I'd like to pursue some kind of legal actions against him so at least he knows how serious this is and stop doing it. I've put it through a collection agency, so far, no result yet. I can file a small claim lawsuit in the local court to get my initial payment paid, but what about these violations?<br>

What options are available and most effective?<br>

Thanks again for all the response!</p>

  3. <p>I have a client who continuously violates my copyrighted images by uploading them to online website or making illegal physical prints.<br>

I've warned him already and he has taken actions to remove those images but I found a new violation recently.<br>

What are the penalty for this? I assume I can file copyright infringement lawsuit against him? How does this work and what will happen?<br>

Hope anyone with such experience can share yours with me before I spend money to find a lawyer.<br>

    Thanks a lot!</p>

  4. <p>OH MY! After all these months using WHCC, never realized the print fullfillment option!<br>

Dave, you are a life saver. Not only the print is cheaper, the shipping is cheaper too!<br>

I assume the print quality is the same :-)<br>

    Thanks again Dave!</p>

  5. <p>For those of you who use WHCC for your print service, especially those who directly ship prints to client, how do you deal with WHCC's minimum order of $12?<br>

Say you price your 4x6 $6, if a client orders just one print, you are gonna lose money on the order. What do you do in this case? Do you have like a minimum purchase order?<br /><br />Thanks!</p>

  6. <p>Just a quick question for you wedding photographers -- do you have PPA membership? I am particularly interested in the liability insurance. Is that part of the membership or do you still need to pay a little out of your own pocket?<br>

    Thanks!</p>

  7. <p>I am searching for a wide-angle (<=28mm), large aperture (<=2.0) prime lens to be used on D3/D700. Of course, the best choice would be the Nikon 28mm f/1.4, but we all know that's just impossible (price and availability).<br>

So all I can find is Sigma 24 or 28mm f/1.8. I mean is this the only choice I have? Any other brand or options that I am missing? I see Canon has lots of options here, too bad ...<br>

How good is the Sigma 24/28mm f/1.8? What's your experience with it?<br>

    Thanks!</p>

  8. <p>For all your wedding photographers out there, quick question -- if you process your print order from WHCC or other vendor manually, do you meet with your clients to deliver the prints or do you always drop-ship to the clients and charge them the shipping fee incurred by WHCC?<br>

I provide both, but recently found that meeting clients to deliver prints become a hassle. But always charging $7.5 drop-ship fee seems to be a limited option for the client, especially they live just 10 minutes from me.<br>

What do you normally do? Thanks!</p>

  9. <p>Quick question regarding using Nikon SB-900 as command to trigger another SB-900/800 wirelessly. In this situation, can the command still fires as key light? Or it only communicates to the slaves and does not fire its own lighting?<br>

    Thanks!</p>

  10. <p>I am looking for product suggestions for a light stand that supports a speedlight (SB-900/800) and a shoot-through umbrella with at least 6 feet height.<br>

I'd like these to be compact, especially the light stand so I can carry it to a location.<br>

I saw in the latest Nikon creative lighting tutorial dvd they are using something pretty cool, very compact, exactly what I need.<br>

Please let me know where can I look for such products? Any links? I'd like to have the entire kit if possible so I don't have to worry about individual parts/compatibilities.<br /> <br /> Thanks!</p>

  11. First of all, I am a new Mac Pro owner! What a machine, so beautiful and so fast!

I've been using both FocusMagic and NoiseNinja filters as Photoshop CS filter plugins on Windows. But I am not

able to run both under Mac. I installed them, but only NoiseNinja shows up as an option, FocusMagic was no where

to be found. Did some research and realized FocusMagic needs some tweak to make it work on Mac

(http://www.focusmagic.com/cs3_rosetta.htm) -- it needs to turn on something called Rosetta.

After I did that, FocusMagic indeed showed up and NoiseNinja is gone. Have any one successfully installed both

filters on CS3 for Mac? Please help! Thanks.

  12. A great article indeed, thanks David!

Going back to the topic about IT guys making 90K dabbing part-time in the field competing with friends of yours who still have a mortgage, healthcare, etc. Are you saying the IT guy should not do it? I mean if he has the talent as a photographer, than why not? Who wouldn't want to make an extra buck? I am sure if your friend knows how to Java programming, he wouldn't mind picking up some part-time projects for a lower cost than regular IT guy, no?

  13. Thanks for all the answers!

David from Chicago, did you quit your regular job and now a full-time pro? How's the transition?

The reason I am asking this is that I've been talking to a buddy who is a part-time wedding photographer who has a regular job, a java developer. He makes about $90K a year already and just started wedding photography part-time, doing pretty well for a starter. So the question is what makes everybody transition from part-time to full-time? I am sure money must be an important factor, don't you need to keep the same income level?

  14. As an average wedding photographer, say you make $2,000 per wedding and book 40 weddings a year, that's just

$80K, nothing too exciting, isn't it?

Say you make $3,000 per wedding, that will make it $120K, better. But this is based on 40 solid bookings a year,

    that's a lot.

Not to mention insurance, healthcare, equipment, and many other costs.

So just how much do you full-time photographers make in a year? And are you happy with the level of your income?
