Randy did you take any photos of the lens before you sent it in for repiar which would prove that there was no external damage to the lens piror to sending it in for repiar. For a repiar tech to say it had suffered impact damage without takeing it apart there must have been something obvious on the outside E.G. damage to the filter threads.

Comeing from Nikon film SLR to DSLR Ihad to make the same sort of decisions last year after checking on this forum and also in some of the gallery's at some of the users images .I phurchased a D40 because the ergonomics of the body felt right for me and my wife this camera with its 6mb sensor produces great images in print up to about 12x10 (never tried anything larger) I phurchased the stdandard 18-55 and 55-200 kit lenses with the camera. These lenses are great most of the time (limations in low light) and the total kit weight about 1Kg or 2.2 lbs total weight is less than the 70-200 f2.8 lens so my advice is go in to a camera store and try holding whatever combinations of body and lens you are thinking about.

Douglas as you do not say what camera you are useing I just had a quick look at KEH and for 3rd party af zoom in the 70-210 range start at about $25 for the screwdriver AF type in the f4-5.6 range. And the manual lenses start from around $10 costs + any S & H.

I have a different issue with NX2 the thumbnails of the images on my drive get mixed up the thumbnail shows a different image to that which opens when clicked on in windows the thumbnails show correctly and the file name in NX coresponds to the file that opens. But other than that it works great also this problem happens with both NEF and JPG files and on more than 1 computer.

As Matt said the high end items that are assembled in Japan seem to be the high price low turnover items and as such they would have less automated assembley than the higher volume items like the D300 this is also the reason for the large price gaps between the consumer and pro grade lenses.

Will as Peter said mm is mm and do not change with FX or DX lenses so while checking out the venue use the 70-200 settings on your lens.

This is a question that is asked a lot and the size of the projected image onto the sensor / film is controled by the focal length of the lens the design of the lens dictates the size of the projected image circle so if you used the same focal length on any camer be it a 10x8, 5x4, 21/4sq (6x6) 35mm or any other format the size of the image would be the same.ie a bottle of JD taken with the same focal length lens would be the same size and with each larger format you would get a larger field of view so the crop factor is on the field of view giveing a apperant telephoto effect.

I use the 50 e series lens on my D40 dont have any problems with focusing.Use a old Weston master 5 light meter to account for lack of internal metering but I do find that the colour's are different from my kit 18-55 lens no complaints about it
