1. A question for the electronics wizards

I have some Stuido Monolights which are 110 volt and we aree planning on returning to the UK next year upon my retirment.

what is the most economic thing to do.

1/ sell my present lights here in canada and buy new in the uk approx cost $1000 to 1500 cdn + the cost of modifiers

2/ Keep my present lights and phurchase a 220 to 110 transformer. This raises the next question how can you calcuate what size

transformer will be needed (dont want to be blowing fuses on the transformer due to high currant draw

3/ sell my present epqument and phurchase multi voltage epqument here in Canada IE the elenchrom D lite series

The lights I have at the moment are Flashpoint models

  2.
My wife has a coolpix P60 that is having some issues. It apears the lens and sensor are off axis.
So my question is does anyone have any information on how take one these apart attched below is one of the images from the camera

  3.
Lauren these old units show what the depth of knoledge is on this site. so the bracket that is sitting behind the unit I would guess can be mounted on a stand so as there is no actual umbrella mount on the light . One of these could be used. http://www.adorama.com/LTUSH.html On the part of the question as to weather it can be used with 4x5 lens with the x sync flash terminial it would work with the older ones I do not know if the newer ones are voltage sensative.

My lights are used in a home stuido no heavy useage. My only objection to the Flashpoint lights is the Propitery accessory mount. My wish would be for someone to make a adaptor to use Bowens accessorys on the lights which I could buy Local. I have built up my kit over time because liveing here in Canada cost of shipping gets expensive. It becomes a pain when the cost of the item is about $10-20 and the shipping is over $30 (min cost) so I tend to wait until I can make a larger order to save on the costs.

  5.
I recieved 1 of the new Flashpoint DG600 monolights fron Adorama http://www.adorama.com/FP600DG.html compairing the this light with one of my 320 M
The DG have a plastic case compaired to a cast alloy on the 320M.
Overall length is about 1" shorter than the 320M.
The weight of the new on is about 1.5 lbs lighter than the older one.
The ballance is better not front heavy.
Major difference is the model light is about 40 white LED's instead of a tungsten or halagen.
The LED's dim with the power adjustment of the flash. The colour of the LED's is closer to daylight.
These are my first impressions of the light.

  6.
I have a 150mm lens that is showing signs of oil on the apture blades. I cleaned this lens out about 9 mounths ago rinsing the blades off with the ronsol cleaning agent (lighter fluel). I did not strip all the focusing mechinsium down.my question is is there a easy way to get most of the old lube out of focusing thread without stripping the lens down to all its component parts.
1/ I was thinking of keep washing the focusing barrel until the cleaner came out clear.
2/ soak the focusing barrel in ronsol for about 24 to 48 hours.
3/ keep cleaning every 6-9 months until all the lube is washed out.
opions as to what would work best also is there a cleaner that would work better.

Thanks in advance

  7.
As a mechinical engineer I can see both sides of the arugment.
1. as QG states as most springs are rated for # of deflections.
2. If a spring is left under load for a extended period of time it can become deformed and loose some of the ability to return to it's normal. this is the same whether it is compression or extension.
The Best example I have seen is if you place a old car spring next to a new one the pair I saw was from a 4 year old car and the old spring was about 1"shorter than the new spring.(this is with coil springs)
So in my mind there is no correct awnser for this question as both are both are just as bad as the other

  8.
Ok it’s that time of the year again and this is a generic question .
And looking for ideas for presents.
When building up the equipment for a small home studio for use with family and friends.
What would you experts recommend as minimum equipment and also nice to have equipment.
that can be phurchased at a later time.
Also bear in mind budget constraint total cost not to exceed $1500 (use Adorama catalogue )

  9.
I have 2 of them and I find that they have plenty of power for use in the small space that I use them. I also have the 24x36 softbox and when checked with a flash meter against the softbox in all 4 corners and the center the output was within 1/3 of a stop. My only reservation with buying the kit is that the stands could be of heaver duty and the first 1 I brought was shipped UPS and the stand was damaged in shipping. Adarorma replaced it with no questions after I emailed them photographs of the damage. And as I live in Canada the return shipping cost would have been more than the cost of the stand I got to keep the broken 1 as well. My personal oppion if you can afford it go with the 620M.

  10.
Joe Both plates are completly flat with no relief. My take on it was that the rad on the 220 insert is to stop it scratching the film where as the 120 insert the plate is just a punched out piece and you can still see the giloteen marks where the metal was sheared. then both are painted in gloss black. I have 1 new 220 insert with the plate removed that I use for 120 (got the 220 when Vistek Canada was clearing out ther old stock for 15$ also picked up some rear lens caps for 3$ each)
11.
I thought I would post this so people with old Mamiya 645 220 film inserts can see what the differences are between them
While All the time I keep seeing people say the spring rates are different for the film pressure plate.
I checked my parts book for the differences the only difference is shown in the image below and the only difference between the pressure plates is that the 220 one that I compared to a 120 one was that the leading edge was more radiused and polished. I can supply PDF if anybody would like them.
12.
Eddy
To connect 2 flash heads for my stuido flashes I made my own cables with 1/8 mono audio jacks on 1 end
and purchased a 2 into 1 mono audio connector total cost about $10 from radio shack + 3 flash cables of the length you want also check out the various sync cords ready made at B&H http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Sync-Cords/ci/1214/N/4294550949
