1.
Thanks everyone;
I went out Sunday and took a few pics with it; the optics are very sharp and after playing around with it I got somewhat used to the noise. As I tend to shoot primarally telephotos, I suspect this will become my primary lens, with my 16-50 and 300 covering the lower and upper boundries. (With my doubler that gives me an extended range of 16mm- 600mm!)
I don't have any pictures to post, but next weekend I may put up a few.
Take care all, and Thanks!

  2.
Hi all;
Last week I got a D-FA 100mm Macro lens for my birthday present for myself: Usually the lens goes for $850, but I was able to get it used for $425. It came yesterday and is in very good shape physically speaking, but the noise it makes to focus can wake the dead! (When I got my DA* it was so silent I couldn't hear the motor.)
For those who have this lens, what has your experience been with it, and if the optics are still good, should I keep it? Also, does anyone have a Tamron 90mm Macro and what has thier experience been? I very well may consider reterning this lens and springing for the Tamron if it is a better lens.
Thanks for you input.

    BTW: I am using the lens on my K-5, so is there a compatability issue?

    Although it is some months off, I still want to welcome you and hope you have a plesanant stay. Where are you from?
I want to first dirrect you to a couple of websites that can help you plan your trip by knowing what there is to do and see, as well as finding out a bit more of out of the way places that are less known.
First is the National Park System. http://www.nps.gov/index.htm
Then the BLM. http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en.html
The U.S Forest Service. http://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/map/state_list.shtml#California
There are several others, but these I have bookmarked. (Google CA state parks)
Since you are in a RV I would consider the BLM or forest service as oposed to the NP's as it will be cheeper to stay; also you might want to consider Sequoia/Kings Canyon NP rather than Yosemite: Yes, they are 200 miles south of Yosemite, but there are A LOT less people, and along with the Redwoods (the tallest trees) you will see the biggest trees. (Sequoias).
I am not that familiar with No. Cal, but I would not recomend your second trip; If you choose to go south, head from Yosemite to San Luis Obispo and then up Hyw 1 through Big Sur and Monterey. (If you go to Monterey be sure to see the Aquarium.) San Luis has a lot of wine country, and there are tours that take you to the different ones so you do not have to drive. Also there are quite a few inlets and coastal waterways.
Anyway, I hope this helps, and have a great time!

  4.
As it has been cold here in the southwest, I thought I might add a few pictures to set the mood... .
Suprisingly, it was 20 degrees this morning but there was no ice on the lake, so I had to use some older pics with snowy sceens.

00bEWT-513695584.jpg.ac16a8d39ba5686edf524259e23e107e.jpg

  5.
Jemal;
Thanks for the encouraging word. So far so good, and my New Year's resolution is to get out 1-2 hours a week to take photos, so we'll see....

  6.
I have to say this was by far my worst year in photos since I started 23 years ago. I had saved up for a year to get a K5 with the 16-50DA* lens, and everything went downhill from there. A horrible trip to the Grand Canyon, lost all my PEF files when my computer crashed, and when I lost my job I had to cancel my trip to Moab, UT that I have wanted to do for the last 5 years. After looking through all my photos only 2 made the cut, and I think this is the better of the two. It was taken at the Canyon.

00bEDm-513405584.jpg.132cbf0cee9d7b34930a797833b973e0.jpg

  7.
Marcus;
Thanks for the inspiration; I have had a Takumar 300mm f4.0 lens for over 10 years but have almost never used it! (It was incredibly difficult to remove the screw mount from my camera (ME Super), and without a good pack it was hard to lug around.)
I broke it out and dusted it off and behold! It fit nicely on my K-5 and the screw mount removed easily. So now with a new pack I might get out and try a few pictures.
Don
P.S. Unfortunately my lens came with a pretty large price tag; $200. OUCH!

00bBTo-511203584.jpg.eedef435fe42f3d6b7870497293e979b.jpg

  8.
I am posting a question regarding the firmware update for my K-5, and am wondering if it is that important.
I'm able to download the update from pentax and then get it on the memory card, but when I try to install it on my camera it wont upload.
I don't want to push my luck and wreck my camera, so does it really matter whether it is updated or not?
Thank you for your input.

    K-5

I too found it remarkable, especially with the 16-50 DA Star lens I purchased with it. It was so quiet that at first I thought it was broken and not focusing! It wasn't till after my wife pointed out the front element had moved that I realized it was working. LOL
A MAJOR difference from my K-100, and serious kudos to the DA Star lens.

    I do not know if this response has been given, but have you tried KEH for used lenses? (keh.com). They have good lenses at resonable prices, although most of them are third party (Sigma, Tameron, etc.) and usually the ooms are variable aperatures. (I can almost garentee you will not find any DA* leses there.)
None the less, the lenses that I have bought were in excellent condition at a very resonable price. In addition they also sell other equipment such as flashes, tripods, and most anything else you might need.
Hope this helps,
10.

I am using PE 10 on Windows 7 OS. When I open my organizer in folder view all my folders in my pictures library show up, but one folder shows empty in the folder view. The pictures do appear in the Thubnail view. When I try to import the folder or files individually, I get the message that the files already exist.

I did note that the pictures in my windows view had little padlocks on them - I have no idea where they came from or what they mean either.

If I delete the folder (and pictures) from the organizer and them re-import them, will that work? Or do I need to remove my PE 10 and reinstall it?

Thanks for your response.

  11.
I understand how to include a single photo within a forum post; however, I noticed that many posts have multiple photos included. How is that done?
I know that I can submit more picture via multiple responses, but there must be an easier way. I know I missed the instructions how to do it, but not sure what term to search the forums. Can you please repeat the instructions?
Thank the elves for thier response.
12.
I'm having a bad time trying to edit this picture (image 1). There is a lighpost under the right arch, and I have tried repeatedly to use the healing/spot brush to remove it. After trying it all at once (a disaster) I switched my tactic and did several lavers a little at a time. The results were drastically improved, but there is still evedence that the photo has been "shoped". (image 2)
Is there a better way to remove the lamp post, or is it a lost cause?

00arhS-497815584.jpg.f66a6e102b34bf53ca807a310de52ee4.jpg

  13.
Thanks all;
I finally made sense of it; i'm kinda slow in the learning dept. A number of you mentioned Lightroom, and it seems to be the rage; would you consider it better than Photoshop? I have never read an article that really explains what it is, and as I have considered getting the full version of Photoshop, I don't want to spend several hundred dollars for a program that is not needed.
Would you all consider Lightroom better than Photoshop?

  14.
I am having a problem resetting the file number on my K5. Even after deleting all images and formatting the memory card, the file number continues to advance (1,2,3,4,....) instead of restarting at 1. This includes using a totally different memory card as well.

Is there anyway to re-zero my file number, is it a defect in my camera, or is it "just the way it is"? It is not the end of the world if it can't be reset back to 1, but if it should and doesn't, then what else may be wrong?

  15.
Paul;
A good question to ask is what are you going to shoot,and how often have you needed one before? I purchased one, used it once, and haven't touched it since. So unless you expect to do a lot of low level shooting, I wouldn't spend the money.
As for where you're going: If you are planning on going into Utah, then you might be interested in checking out the Vermillion Cliffs/ Pariah Canyon Wilderness. (I have included the hyperlink). Although I have never been there, I have heard that it is spectacular. Also, look into Escalante/ Grand Staircase.

I hope you have a great vacation.
