1.
george, i am guessing you misunderstood me. correct me if i am wrong. but i am not saying i flat out refuse to show them if they ask, i am just saying i am a huge perfectionist. maybe i am a snob i guess. if i can eyeball it generally speaking and say it's a good photo i show it no problem but it depends on the image too that i take.
think of it this way, if you were a fashion designer would you show the average consumer the unfinished piece risking the chance they want you to do over after the client trusts you will do a great job based on your port? too much risk in that. this is just my personal opinion. i look at the lcd myself to see if the facial expressions or exposure is off and redo it cos that much you can see. but eye correction dodging burning stuff like that you may never get the chance to correct if you show them and they ask to delete it. besides all that there's so many opps you may miss if a bunch of people are trying to see the picture which leads to potential drain of the battery. or changing for a fresh battery which wastes more time and more missed photo opps which might have been prevented if you didn't show all on request.

i guess an exception of always showing it is doing an art gallery opening...if there aren't that many people. i measure it by whether or not you have to duck in and out of the crowd or dodge catering staff constantly.

basically i'll do it. i don't like to but i will. eh i didn't realise i would get varied responses.

  2.

i'm just curious. i personally don't feel comfortable showing them simply because while they may look decent to the public eye, i know as a photographer i can't really tell if it is good from my tiny lcd screen. in my opinion, hardly does a photographer ever take a completely perfect photo cos we are perfectionists. we need to run it through photoshop. or if they think it is bad i offer to retake it. but legally can they ask me to delete it if i am covering their event? should i specify this in a contract?

  3. yeah she was shooting on speculation. she sells her photographs to some filipino newspapers in the area, or in

this case, the one in charge throwing the party. she only gets paid after the photographs are presented to the

client. and she works by herself. she doesn't work for any studio. what happened exactly was she approached me at

a party cos she's a friend of a friend of my mom's and had heard i am a photographer. she called me a few days

later. all the agreements were done over the phone. it's all over now. i really don't want to talk about it

further. but don't worry, my friend's a lawyer and he's going to help me draft some contracts that include

payment first in the print when i do get hired again cos i did like the experience of shooting an event, but i've

definitely learned my lesson. i won't be working for her again though. since the woman who hired her is also a

friend of my mom's i hope i'm still okay..

thanks everyone for the feedback :)

  4. i was hired 2 weeks ago to be a second shooter at a debutante ball and shooting the event went well. i have about

163 images i'm pleased with. my first mistakes were, not having a written contract, and taking the common sense

road and getting the phone number of her boss instead of her the main photog. she told me at the end of the night

to put them on disc and give them to her so she could edit them. i had no idea of how to get them to her since i

don't drive but didn't think too much into that either since i did have her phone number. i did some minor

editing including my copyright seal in photoshop and six days later had them ready. called her repeatedly but she

never picked up her cell phone and she had no voicemail inbox. now it's 12 days after the event and i got a call

from her boss who got my number through digging (apparently she knew someone who knows my mom) asking where her

photos were and when she could pick up prints. now, making prints would normally be no problem but i have been

unemployed for a day job for a month, and my job only does direct deposit so that means no money for another

month. and i never agreed to delivering prints in the first place. i told her i'd call her back but i'm unsure of

what to do. is it too late? what if i'm blackballed in my local filipino community and no one will hire me? i

had several job offers in the upcoming months from this party. completely flustered. and to make things worse, my

boss' boss said i could have been published a week ago had i delivered on time. i feel like i'm at fault in some

    ways but not others:

-it was stupid of me to allow myself a job with no written contract as i got less for the hourly rate than i wanted.

-to trust that my head photog knows how to work a cell phone or email..some people still don't and it appears

she's one of them to trust that somehow it'd be okay.

should i deliver the photos to her anyway on disc? is there a chance i can still get paid? am i blackballed? help!

  5. basically i'm working freelance for a woman who works for some filipino

newspapers in the chicago area. it's at a hotel but it's not a wedding. i'd

imagine a cotillion or something related at 8 pm. how much should i ask for? she

said she's willing to pay me. i know this is last minute but she called me not

two hours ago asking me to come. please respond if you can asap. should i dress

up too? if you can, please email tessalenore at gmail dot com since i'll be out

all day and can check my email from phone. thanks so much!

  6. keith: should i cut my hair? my mom suggested it but i've been told by others from there it's not necessary. it's about 20 inches from the top of my head and i've been growing it out so i can donate it later but it's not ready to. my mother said jungle bugs are a problem and they might try to make a home in my thick hair. i just figure i'll be okay with my hair up and covered in a hat or bandana at all times.

jeff: you're probably right about that many cameras but i figured i'd bring the yashica since it's less likely to be stolen as it is not that well known to the public vs a canon. i want to bring my minolta cos i have 2 lenses for that. and the digital for when i do run out of film.

  7. i've read all the posts here on the philippines and found this one most helpful. i'm going to take those tips into

consideration. i'm an american and am half filipino and will be travelling on

august 4th with my mother who is from cagayan valley. i will be there for 2

weeks. i'll also be on st. paul university's campus. i'm told these areas is

more trustworthy since we will be in the country but i have some questions for

manila/marketplaces that are notorious for pickpockets. when i go out in public

i'll most likely be with my cousins and/or my mother. i'll be giving my money

to my cousins when i want to buy things. i won't wear any jewelry. but is

bright coloured eyeshadow okay? are skirts okay? i don't want to stand out as

someone wealthy plus i'll have my camera so...more questions but first i'll

    list the equipment i'm bringing:

    -yashica gsn with 45mm lens
-digital slr fuji finepix with an attached lens that can zoom to 57mm
-256mb memory card
-some cdrws
-minolta maxxum 5 with 50-80mm lens
-100mm-300mm zoom lens for the minolta
-battery charger for the fuji

i don't plan on carrying all the cameras at once. just one camera per day. now

my question is when i use the minolta should i just stick to the smaller lens

or do you think it will be safe to bring both without the risk of having it

stolen. also when loading film i'll have one roll loaded at all times and one

roll in my pocket. is that a safe approach? should i keep my camera around my

neck and hold it when not shooting or is a camera bag safe? mine has a canon

logo and i plan to put black electric tape over all logos cameras and the bag.

how will i deal with the swarms of children that will likely see me eventually

even in the country and will want their photos taken?

oh my parents warned me not to get too into my photographing as i might get

kidnapped because i'll be mistaken for a journalist. i just plan on being alert

at all times and try to resist taking too many photos but that will be hard.

i'm actually a photojournalism student so anyone on here who are

photojournalists with tips on dealing in a foreign country are welcome too.

oh my focus is mainly street/portrait photography and occasional landscapes.

any help is appreciated. sorry if this is a bit lengthy.

  8. i posted a couple weeks ago about this problem and am ready to

give up. i tried the freezer trick several times at different time intervals:

10, 20, 40. then i stuck my filters in there for an hour and nothing. even

turned the temperature up at highest. when i pulled it out, it was stuck to the

freezer shelf but they still didn't get unstuck. this so called freezer trick

doesn't seem to be working as you say. does more than an hour work? if anyone

can remember a specific time interval at whatever temperature your freezer is at

    that would be most helpful.

for now i'm just going to the local camera store and see if they can help me

because time is running out and a big project is coming up soon. if i had the

money to get these wrenches i would but i can't. i'm hoping this store can help me.

  9. i was shooting something in a hurry and screwed on one filter on top of another.

3 filters in all and in my hurry to shoot it before it was gone, i think i

screwed the 2 filters together wrong. i was able to remove them together from

the 3rd filter closest to the lens but now i can't seem to unstick them. i even

tried my friend who is in theatre tech try to pry them loose with a trick she

uses for light filters but no luck. any tips? thus ends the not so bright girl

    with an equipment mishap.

  10. i currently live in champaign and haven't visited my parents in

awhile. there's only one photo lab i trust down here and they don't do

medium format color. i was planning to visit chicago next weekend and

wanted to drop off some 120 color film to either triangle camera or

just perfect one hour photo in evanston but i've found both numbers to

be disconnected. 411 also says they don't exist. so is it true that

they are gone forever? i've never had this kind of film processed

before so i don't really know where else to go that's within a

student's budget so if you have any recommendations please let me

    know. thanks!
