  2. Has anybody in this forum used the Leica M-D? If so, what do you think of it?

I bought one a couple of months ago. I'm a lifelong Leica user and the M-D is a trip down memory lane. It is the only one of my Leicas that I'm using now and am pleased with a return to truly deliberate photography. Initially I missed some conveniences that are absent from the M-D. However such longings were quickly forgotten. I am an outside, daylight, color photographer who uses 35mm and 24mm lenses.

  3. It looks like a wartime (WW2) 3C from 1941. It may have originally had a red/black shutter, or it may still have one. The marking on the back indicates that it would have belonged to the German Air Force. It has obviously been used after the war if the later 1949 design(?) Summaron made in 1958 was actually part of the kit.

The EL No. is very different from the conventional serial No. which indicates 1941 I think the difference is tied up with the military designation.

It looks like an original Leica to me.

I agree that it is a 1941 IIIc based on the serial number as reported by Chester Sartorius in his book "Identifying Leica Cameras". It appears original and may have historic value. It was probably shipped with a 50mm f3.5 Elmar.

  4. OT: I just opened up a new set of Leica binoculars. All the paperwork

including the test certificate is present. A white tag with the

letters QM2 in red surrounded by a red box is attached to one strap

lug by an elastic band. I've never seen such a tag on any Leica

equipment and I curious/concerned to find out what it means. Thanks

  5. I'm responding to Ted Harris...I detected a note of distaste for those who buy limited editions or do not constantly use their purchases. My experience with professional photographers is that they spend as little as possible on equipment (which makes good business sense) and that many of their equipment purchases are second hand. Many non professionals buy alot of very expensive equipment and it frequently ends up on the used market in mint condition where it finds a home with a pro at a good price. I think that the purchase of such equipment by non pros and equipment buffs serves to assist the survival of many small producers of high grade gear such as Wisner, Ebony, Linhof, Leica, and etc. Remember, the possession of more cameras than one can possibly ever use in ones lifetime is not illegal. :)

  6. Unless there is a huge price difference, buying from a foriegn source is a matter of "knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing". Why not buy from B&H or Badger. If they sell gray market, they tell you up front, and you send defective stuff back to them. The price disparity seems to be lessening and my most recent experience with Robert White was not good.
  7. Thanks for the help. I bought a little used Gitzo 1549 with a Gitzo 1570 head from a neighbor. He decided to keep the ARCA ball head. This combination should work...now if I could find someone in the Atlanta area who could teach me how to use 8X10 Polaroid materials.
  8. I'm figuring the capacity of the head and tripod by reading the rated capacities of each...about 16 lbs. Its now clear that rated capacity isn't the real test because the rating presumes that the load will be centered which is not the case with an 8X10. Since I intend to use the 8X10 frequently, I'm wondering if I shouldn't just bite the bullet and get a Gitzo 1549 and an ARCA B-1 with quick release??? I found such a set up used for about half price.
  9. My 8X10 camera, lens, and back weigh 13 lbs total. Is it ok to mount

them on a Gitzo G1227(3 piece carbon fiber) with a Manfrotto 405

geared head? The rated capacity of this combination is 16 lbs and it

is a very light setup. Thanks.

  10. The 45s is quite suitable for landscape photography but it is capable of much more. Few cameras are as versatile. Some people find the opening and closing of the camera to be difficult, but most users are truely pleased with it. If I was only going to do landscape and I was planning to lug it in a pack, there are more limited cameras that are lighter. If you are buying used be careful of damaged bellows and make sure that you obtain and understand the instructions for opening and closing. Linhof instructions are nowhere near as well done as their cameras and tech support in the US is, IMHO, poor. Repair services are great, provided by Marflex, but you should have no problem with the 45s. Paul Butzi has an excellent review of the 45s.
