  1. You can buy a Panasonic FZ 28 for about a three hundred dollars. It gives you a 27mm to 275 mm range on a leica lens. If you look at the features, you'll see it has the variety that Canon is trying to achieve with the G10. If you are looking for a lower priced camera, close your eyes and point at the wall of cameras. Just about all others offer very good features. look for a good screen and lots of megapixels.
  2. I just purchsed a Panasonic dmc FZ 28. I have been looking at filters and saw the B&H UV/IR filter advertised with

some color examples. This filter would seem to make a difference on blacks and or skin tones. Does anyone know

if this sensor comes with an Infrared coating? Thanks<div>00R3Qs-75653684.thumb.jpg.ddbd7fd6c8fdf49003025ab81adc821e.jpg</div>

  3. Hello Matt,

I too recently acquired a Mamiya (7 II). I am very happy with the results I have gotten. The above members contributions are right on. I would add one other thing. Get an instruction manual on this camera. I did for mine, and learned some things I wouldn't have otherwise. The camera lends itself more to landscape photography due to the fact that the lenses dont focus up-close.

I shot rangefinders for a while using a leica and enjoy this photography style. Lets say that its just a little different. I have heard great things about the quality of the 50mm lens. Congratulations on your purchase.

  4. Love capitalism? We live it everyday. I agree with previous post. We all want something for nothing (or as close to nothing as we can get). We have the freedom to chose. I don't shop Wallmart for a reason. I do give my dollars to the local guys who may come close to what I want to pay. Its all relative to your pocket book. CC probably had it coming for not being more market savy. Its competition for your buck. Who are you going to give it to and why?
  5. Perry,

I have a leica M6 TTL and love the RF photography. I want to buy a MF Mamiya 7 II next. I am going to stick with film because I know what it is and what it does. It is also not going away. I thought about what you asked and am still considering a big expenditure in the film realm.

Dslr's I am sure are very good. But Honestly, I'm just an enthusiast, I dont want to spend the big bucks on a developing technology. $4000.+ for cameras that do a lot, have more bells and whistles than a 747 instrument panel. That's not for me. My leica and future Mamiya 7 II will offer me minimal complication and a lot of fun. I bought a nice microtek scanner for the quiet sit down film scanning. I'll get better resolution than the best DSLR for a fraction of the cost. I can develop my 35mm roll of film for $1.59 plus tax. I print what I want, the way I want it.

I have the best of both worlds. I think this is the answer you are looking for. Have fun with "your" photography. Don't take sides. Film is not going away. Good luck.

  6. I have a couple of M6 cameras and would like to scan the photos in

    to high def. digital files.

Can you suggest some up-and-coming technology/scanners. Or some

present-day equipment that would do a great job. I don't want to

spend more than a couple of thousand dollars. I hear that some

scanners will copy at 20 megapixels; is that true? Your suggestions

    are appreciated. Thank you.

  7. I purchased a small padded bag with a comfortable shoulder strap. In it I carry two bodies, one with color, the other B & W (this means no regrets). I carry a 35 cron, 75 sumi, 135 elmar(heavy). I'll be adding the 50 soon.

Depending on your mission, one body and two lenses are enough for anyday shooting. usually B&W with the 35 and 75 for me.

  8. Avril,

I bought my leica from a local retailer that sold all the brands, new and used. The sales person impresed me with his knowledge of the rangefinder system, and the quality of the Leica product. Yes its a lot of money. You get what you pay for, and it holds it value over the years.

Marketing is the key, and your best hopes of success is converting SLR users. You can only do this in multiple brand stores, not boutiques.

As a side note, I have not seen post from Leica reps here. I wonder if they are looking?

  9. Jeff,

I too am new to this system. My problem was that in winding the film, something was not quite catching the film and it failed to advance, ruining many good photo ops.

First try inserting your film cartrige and extending the fiilm in to the catch wheel under the advance lever. before you close the back panel or replace the bottom plate, try advansing the film to be sure that it is catching.

As you advance the film, the rewind lever should also spin as the film advances. If it does not spin, the catch for rewinding is either broken or missing altogether. I am writing without looking at my camera.

If anything, this procedure will ensure that your film is advansing correctly. GOOD LUCK.

  10. Leon,

I will take your message in its most basic terms. Like any system one might use, there are technical aspects as to function, in order to reproduce that moment, and its essence.

I am a new Leica user, inspired by Black and white photos from a man that may not even be alive today. He was not famous, nor even known in photographic circles.

His hobby was photography. I was but 21 then(1979). The images of that fishing village in the Filipines. The semi-nude girl wading in to the water were very captivating. He had the eye and the drive to do it(to photograph). He also had a range finder. I don't know if it was a Leica.

Most recently I found my old Minolta from that time period. The controls were still set to manual. I chuckled and thought that a Leica Rangefinder with TTL metering would be Ideal for my style of photography. I like photographing people, and this camera (Leica) is ideal.

I look at my Black and whites with youthful joy. Some are better than others. The M6 TTL is the culmination in simplicity and technical achievement (in my humble opinion, the best offering of the M series). I now have two bodies and two different viewfinder magnafications. One camera loaded with color and the other with B & W.

With this camera I have discovered the essence in the tool and the photograph.
