1.
I recently had a K10D repaired - the shutter stopped working. For $320 including tax and shipping, they replaced the shutter, back cover, a bunch of other things, and sent me back a camera that is like new. The old one had about 60,000 shutter activations. (Canada here - repairs done in Mississauga, ON).

 2.
I have the option of buying a used 50-135mm. I will be the third owner, the seller says the lens is mint. The price will be in the 750-800 range(CDN).
1. Have there been any issues with these lenses? (Did I read about bad SDMs?)
2. Will I be disappointed? I own the 77, 31, 43, 16-45, and the Pentax-F 135mm f2.8. I have been using 2 bodies with these lenses with good results. I imagine the 50-135 will be convenient, but will I be psyched about the performance?

Thanks gang.

 3.
I downloaded PhotoME and discovered the dead K10D had about 57,000 on the shutter. The Canadian Pentax repair center has it now, and will be sending me a repair quote soon, or an offer to be a newer model at a discounted price. I'm intrigued. Can't wait to hear the verdict.

 4.
I can't get Photoshhop to open raw images taken with a Pentax K-m. I shot some with my K10D, on the same type of memory card (SanDisk Ultra 2), and they open fine (as usual), but the K-m .pef files will not open. I can view them on the camera, convert them to .jpg in the camera, but can't open on PS. PS syas it's the wrong type of file.

 5.
Just getting back to developing BW negs after a long hiatus. Great results so far, except for a roll of FP4 120 that was grainy. Here is what I did - any comments welcomed to improve my process.
1. Paterson tank system.
2. d-76 (stock) - solution is 3 weeks old, half full bottle.
3. 8.5 minutes, 20C, 10 secs of agitation at beginnning, 5 secs every 30 seconds.
4. stop bath (vinegar 1:4, 20 C, its what I had on hand), followed by quick rinse (temp?)
5. Ilford hard fixer, 20C, 5 minutes, same agitation as developer, 3 weeks old from half full bottle.
6. Hypo for 3 minutes 20C, rinse for 5 minutes (temp in the 20C ballpark)
7. photoflo.

 6.
K10D #1 Shutter count: 57,400 (not working)

K10D #2 Shutter count: 67,019 (working)
Sensor cleaning will not actuate shutter, M at any shutter speed will not work either. Camera will focus, but makes a 1 second buzzing noise when actuation is attempted. Makes a constant buzzing noise when sensor cleaning is attempted. I can buy a used one for about $300, same price as a repair.
I was planning on upgrading, and keeping my K10s for students. I will either replace or repair. K5s here I come!

 7.
Hi folks:
I have been using a pair of K10Ds for about 4 years. Over a 100 weddings, and who knows how many other jobs. I was trying to guess how many actuations there were on the shutter, but really have no idea. Is there way to know how many actuations?
The shutter in one camera has stopped working. It focuses, beeps, and makes a noise that sorts sounds like a sensor cleaning or IS noise, but will not actuate. I changed batteries, removed the battery grip, did all the logical things I could think of. Is there something else I can try? Is it time for K5?
8.
My friend has a Canon Rebel XTi, and has been given a series of pentax lenses (eg: smc Pentax-F 135mm f2.8). If she buys the canon - pentax adpater, will her camera work in Av mode. We already know she will have to focus manually, is it worth the bother to try?

 9.
Bought a film scanner, had to try developing some film after 30 years away from the darkroom.
Details: Tmax 100, D-76. Ilford rapid fixer, hypo, recommended temps, times and agitation. Films turned out good, but I have a few questions:
1. The negs were pink before I started the rinse (fine after the rinse) - is this normal?
2. Scans were quite dusty (scanner or negs, not sure). How important is a wetting agent?
Thanks

 10.
My 540 smells funny (cue the jokes). I never noticed it before but I can smell something when it discharges. Also, it makes sort of a "clacking" sound when it goes off now - very noticeable, a recent issue. I have used it a lot in the past 3 years. I'm just wondering if these are common death rattles or just my imagination.

 11.
I am a K10D user (with all the limited primes). I am considering upgrading to the K5, but would be disappointed if the focusing speed and accuracy was improved. I like all the reports I have been seeing about image quality, and have read other reports that the K7 and K5 are very similar with the exception of the sensor.
I would like to hear from others who have upgraded and their opinions on the focusing.

 12.
I also recommend the 31mm f 1.8. I also own the 77mm f 1.8. In low light conditions I am often perplexed by the uncertain and sometimes unreliable focusing of the K10 and 77mm combo. Love it otherwise. Just sayin. You cant go wrong with the 31mm.

 13.
OK, more details.

There are no other studio rentals within 300 miles. It's a small market, artistic college town.
Insurance, check. 1000 sq.ft. Completely equipped. I worry about theft and damage, and any other unforeseen issues. I have never rented a studio before, so I may be overlooking what others may be expecting, from the novice to the experienced. Just wondering about precautions that are less obvious, other than insurance and rental agreements.

Thanks

 14.
Hi:

I will soon be adding studio rental to my business. It will be a unique business for this area, and I am optimistic about it.

I would like to hear from others who have a similar business, or wh have used such a business. i want to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Thanks in advance.

 15.
Radiopopper mystery solved.

There is a spring-loaded "pogo pin" inside the foot of the radiopopper that makes constant contact witht he hot shoe. The pogo pin in my radiopopper was defective (no spring). I sent a video to the company demonstrating the problem, and they replaced the unit pronto.

Larry

 16.
Peter:

I received my hot shoe F adapters, and the trigger does the same thing unless I use the sync cord. With the adapter and the sync cord and the already ugly radiopopper, it looks like a sci-fi prop.

The poppers still pop uncontrollably while in the hot shoe adapter. I am am convinced now that the popper is defective, and I am going to try a freind's on my camera and see if it acts the same.

 17.
OK. More news (I hope this helps someone in the future).
I tested the radiopoppers on a Canon. Worked fine. Tested them on a new Pentax. Worked fine. The grooves in the contacts on the hot shoes of my K10Ds seem to be the culprit, because the pin on the radiopoppers is very small, and has only a slight amount of travel, I believe it shorts if the camera is jostled.
Someone suggested actually adding a little solder to the center pin on the hot shoe. Who knows what might come un-soldered if heat was applied to those contacts. The same person suggested adding some solder to the pin on the popper, giving it a bit more girth.

I'm gonna sleep on it.

 18.
Hi Peter:
It sounds like we have similar workloads. My Pentax (AF-540) flash never misfires. The old ebay triggers would work intermitantly in the end, and would fail most often while tilting the camera for portraits, so I suspected the plastic shoes on the radios were worn and making a poor connection. The radio poppers have metal shoes, but no locking mechanism.

The manufacturer suggests "taping" the trigger down, or trying it with a sync chord.
